Like, yea you're not gonna compete with a real camera. But have you seen the film Tangerine? It won awards at sundance, and was shot on iPhone 5S. Telling a good story doesn't require shallow depth of field, or incredible low light performance. Just a good script, good acting, and good cinematography. Honestly if you wanna make movies, i think you should make at least 10 short films with your iPhone before buying a camera. That will make you a way better cinematographer

@@VictorLaforteza don't get me wrong, i drool over cinema cameras, and I'd looooove one of those sony cameras. But iPhone's are so good now you really don't need one unless you're trying to make a marvel film. It is cool to see comparisons with actual cameras, but it really doesn't matter haha

I agree. The difference between pro cameras and iPhone camera keeps getting smaller and smaller - and even with these differences, the iPhone camera performance is exceptional. Clearly a great filmmaking tool. Honestly, to anyone complaining about the picture quality not being quite as good as some pro models - have you ever seen ANY indie films from around the world? There are many made with smaller budgets and average cameras and they are great films without the budgets for something this cinematic. I wish something as amazing as this was available when I was a younger budding filmmaker making shorts more regularly - the quality of my old videos is awful compared to what is achievable with a smartphone today. I'm seriously tempted to make a film using the cameras on the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

I will also add - after seeing what was happening with iPhones and the quality increases on non-professional gear, I knew years ago that eventually these cameras would get even better (to sell new models). I'm floored by how much better these cameras keep getting - for non-professional or professional work. The photography in this video is beautiful and cinematic mode looks great (and even films in 4K instead of 1080p on the previous year's model).

But having these phones give you everything you need to make amazing stuff. Hell i remember building a glide came for a camera. It was huge and kinda hard to use. hey man amazing review, a quick note. do you think waking on a variable ND filter to combat tightening of aperture would help with the DOF in video mode? really curious if the normal mode can present a more "cinematic" DOF than the computational heavy version offered by the "cinematic" mode. thanks man! and amazing video!

I think it's very possible with a third party app when you can control the aperture of the camera! The think with the stock camera app is that there's no control and everything is mostly automatic.

Iphone has fixed aperture so this would make no difference in depth of field. It would only affect shutter speed/motion blur.

Bro, I'm about to pull the trigger on the Pro Max but, could you tell me if 256gb will be enough or I should take the Pro with 512gb? I shoot KZbin videos primarily on Iphones with the Filmic Pro LogV2 in 4k, and will be willing to make use of the Pro res thing as well. Do you think 256gb will be enough for that kind of application? I found both around the same price here in a local shop. Also, for everyday use and convenience pro or pro max?

256gb had 31 mins of prores 4k footage from the camera and thats no apps or anything installed. you should get 512gb or 1tb if you can, the video files will eat up a lot of space. I would say pro is great the pro max is a little big imo.

@@VictorLaforteza Thanks for the reply. Here in Poland we can barely get any of the Pro or Pro Maxes but somehow luckily someone had the Pro 512 and Pro Max 256 at the same price. I heard the big battery in the Max version is cool though. Did you have to recharge before the end of your projects(after using up most space) or it was able to see the project through? And lastly, why have you chosen the Pro Max even though you find it too big, what, are you returning it now? Once again, thanks.

I've only gotten the Pro Max and didn't return it! it's easy to get used to the size and the extra battery does help! After a day of shooting from 100% it would be around 20% left! on a very hot summer day too! The phone heats up a lot so make sure to give it a breather here and there.

@@VictorLaforteza I don't know about North America but, out here, there's a huge price gap between the Pro Max 128,256,512 and 1T. I went for the 256 and bought the $3 200gb/month iCloud space now my 256 is almost 500 instead of forking out another couple of hundreds to get the 512bg, haven't you ever thought of that? I see people tripping over each other to get the biggest size not knowing there is even a much convenient and cost effective way of going about the storage problem. I'm planning on keeping the phone for a year of maximum 2 years meaning 3 x 12=$36 or $72 before I trade it in for the newest one then.

tbh, not really that worth it. You get a bit of flexibility but it eats up a lot of storage. 256 GB can only shoot 37 mins max and that's without any apps or anything else installed. I'd stick with just the normal video format especially if you're not gonna spend much time in editing & colouring the footage

I've had the iPhone 14 Pro for about a week now and have just recently gotten into the video making again for my film class at school. Hi nice review, i was wondering something cos i use mainly the main camera and i took some shots with it with pro raw enabled at 48 Mpx, results are amazing specially the sky but when i touch the info panel i only found out 36 Mpx shots... i am doing something wrong ? its not 48k its 48 mg pixels, the regular 14 does not have the same capabilities as the 14 pro and 14 pro max

@@gerralld5211 yea, ok, pardon my k but that's not really the point really... as mentioned, for VIDEOccd I've read more than once that it does NOT use the 48 lens. So for VIDEO it might not really matter if one get's the reg 14.

Incredible footage Victor. It's amazing how you could make the iPhone 14 footage look great with the cinematic colors and the sharpness. Did you use the built-in camera app to shoot the footage? Or something like Filmic Pro? I'd make a cinematic iPhone 14 video myself, if I could get my hands on one lol

Hello, may I know how do you turn down the over sharpening from the footage? 🥹 Is it plugins or built in effects? I’m using both Premiere and Final Cut and yet to achieve a good natural and non over sharpening result 😢

need to blur it a bit so the digital edge is countered. I've heard some apps can turn down the sharpness as well but not too sure what.
