My family’s phone plan just got switched so I was able to trade in my phone for the new iPhone 16 Pro Max. The phone has the ability to shoot Apple ProRes Log in the native camera app so I wanted to get some test footage and mess around with the coloring and see what it’s like working with LOG iPhone footage. Keep in mind i’m far from a pro colorist. I applied a basic ProRes Log to Rec.709 conversion LUT and did some basic corrections and then applied a simple creative LUT and did a light grade. Overall I think the colors look really great in warm daylight, and even indoors when there’s good natural light lighting the scene, but in low light the camera could be much better, but again, you can only expect so much from a smartphone camera. One thing I noticed is the native camera app seemed to have auto shifting white balance or something cuz I noticed that the colors on certain clips seemed to shift randomly, but that could also just be the conversion LUT as well. Regardless, I want to also get some test footage with the BlackMagic camera app as well to see if that improves the camera at all.
