Apple OSs in general have departed from the original simplicity. I have to give permission to every single app to do very specific things. It is painful.

I had to sign out from the mac icloud, sign out from the phone icloud, then sign in again to both. afterwards it greeted me with a screen and it worked

Allowing the iPhone to connect to the apps via the privacy settings worked for me. I just need to jerryrig a stand. I'm not forking out AU$160 to clip the phone onto my screen.
