Nah, that’s what Sony does, and theirs sounds confusing too. What’s the purpose of the Sony Xperia 5 xx? It’s really a standard version of the Xperia 1 xx (like the Samsung S24 is to the S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 is to the 15 Pro) but it’s slotted between the flagship 1 xx and budget 10 xx even though it’s not a midranger.

Haha, I actually don't have a huge issue with this, because the number always stood for something. 1-10 it stood for the current generation. And then for the 11th generation, they changed it to the year the phone was being released instead (2020).

You know, that’s the first time I’ve heard that argument. It’s not a bad one. If going solely off designs, the first three iPhones are all essentially one generation. (The 3G did also add GPS, but I wouldn’t say that’s a huge differentiator)

Everything else is just a revamp for better sales or resales of already existing hardware manufacturing

“S” was used to differentiate between two generations. “Plus,” “Pro,” and “Pro Max” are used to distinguish between different models within the same generation. It’s all just marketing terms.

In ways retrospect.. S means the upgraded version, faster, and more professional. Then they changed the term to pro.. which is also upgraded. plus means it’s bigger. Then they shortly changed the term to max… just bigger. So now it’s pro and max

You have to rethink everything from the 11 to now. Apple changed up the naming scheme, they didn’t want to give the lowest model a name that would be seen as degrading. In reality the 11,12,13,14, and 15 are really the lower spaced variants. The 11 pro to the 15 pro are the actual base model iPhones that follow the first generation to the XS.

My first iPhone was the 5s and I always thought of it as part of the 5 generation because it kept the same design but had upgrades for the new year version. I think apple started it as a marketing strategy but dropped it after it turned out to be unsuccessful. People want the latest generation and the s version was mostly skipped over. Also after the iPhone 6 apple realized their two year cycle of revamping the phone was unreasonable because the r&d for whatever reason wasn’t keeping up so to give the appearance of innovation they dropped the s and started calling them the next model number.

@@EiskalteLanze That’s correct. I heard somewhere that they originally wanted the X out a year earlier to reference the 10th generation, but can’t confirm that. However, since they came out with a XS a year later, ever since the 11 the name has been 1 year off (11 is the 12th anniversary) and 2 generations off (11 is the 13th generation). 😅

It is its own thing, but they're considered part of the existing generation when they're released. Which makes sense, since they have a lot of the same components as the current flagship when they're released, just in an older body style. So for example, the iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, and 2022 SE are all considered part of the 15th generation.

i HATE the way iPads are named, they can stick with the iPhones naming scheme, but no, I have to confuse people (and also myself) with how the new iPad 10th Gen, isn't better than the iPad Pro (gen something) iPad 1, iPad 2, iPad 3 and so on would be MUCH better than whatever companies are doing with unlabeled tech products. Very nice! And thanks for asking. I’ve had a 5, 6 Plus, 7 Plus, 12 Pro Max, and now a 15 Pro. Went with the smaller size finally, and I’ve really enjoyed it. But I also joined Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program went I got the 15 Pro - so there’s a good chance I’ll be upgrading to one of the 16 models 😅

It depends on how you do the counting. According to rumors, they thought the 8 would be the 7S, and then X would be the 8. Technically they could have done 8 and 9. The official reason for the X name was to recognize the 10th anniversary. Although, I read somewhere they wanted that phone out 1 year earlier to recognize the 10th generation. Long story short (like my ultimate point) the numbers in the iPhone names don't mean anything. It's all just marketing.

Hmm. Interesting. I do think I need to explore a little more how Apple defines a generation. However, I am basing this off things Apple has said in the past, and what all the different wiki’s say. I will also say the Pro’s are different from the S’s in the sense that, the non-pros don’t build off the pros. Meaning, the iPhone 6 has all the features of a 5S and builds off it. The 7 has the features of a 6S and builds off it. But a 12 doesn’t build off the 11 pro, it builds off the 11.

IPhone 2G, IPhone 3G, IPhone 3GS, IPhone 4, IPhone 4S, IPhone 5, IPhone 5S, IPhone 5C, IPhone 6, IPhone 6+, IPhone 6S, IPhone 6S+, IPhone SE (1st generation), IPhone 7, IPhone 7+, IPhone 8, IPhone 8+, IPhone X, IPhone XS, IPhone XS Max, IPhone XR, IPhone 11, IPhone SE (2nd generation), IPhone 12, IPhone 13, IPhone SE(3rd generation), IPhone 14, IPhone 15, in total 28 generations of IPhones (not including variations of IPhones like the 15 Pro Max, only variations are the ones released in a different date which technically makes it a different IPhone, this doesnt include the 5C as it is a whole different model than the 5)

You are correct there are more than 17 models of iPhone, but there is only 17 generations. For example, the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, and 15 Pro Max are 4 different models, all within the same generation.

The antenna bands are different, and the camera bump is a little different, but the overall design and dimensions were the same. A phone case for the 6S also fits on a 7.

@@nickbradley the camera sizes and positions were different. That was more the case for the 7 and 8 and the 6 and 6s. Only a 7 case would have a chance to fit on a 6s, although it would look quite weird with the bigger punch out in the case. Although all cases are different, just the ones I saw for the 6s and 6 had smaller camera holes. Although dimensions and the front of the phone look exactly the same. The 7’s stock storage options was upgraded along with the colour options, stereo sound, 4 flash LED’s on the back and a P3 colour display. It was hard to notice these changes because the two phones looked very similar.

Nobody is denying there’s differences/upgrades - but it’s also not a “different design.” Put it this way, if there was no iPhone 6S as we know it, and instead we went from the iPhone 6 to the iPhone 7, and Apple called the 7 the 6S, we’d all agree it was an S phone.

For iPhones I generally just use the iOS version that every iPhone came with when it first came out. This also applies to the SE phones, since they're a part of the existing generation/iOS when they're released. So the iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, and 2022 SE are all part of the 15th generation.

The SE originally meant for Special Edition. SE was meant to be older design with newer chip. Based on the Watch SE and rumors of the SE 4 I say SE should stand for Simplified Edition.
