I have used iPhone XR for 2-2.5 years and after that iPhone 12 mini for 1.5 years.. I have used the phones with cases and without cases.. I have never experienced such an issue.. In my opinion, people should care a little bit more while using devices that cost this much money.. These are not meant for rugged use.. If you are in that user-demographic, then you can go for some other rugged phones or use a proper case.. For example, you cannot use a Samsung Fold device the same way you use a normal phone.. The screen can be scratched even with your nails.. And it is a premium device as well.. So, if you find that a device doesn't suits you or fits your purpose, you can simply buy some other phone.. I mean, there are a lot to choose from, and no one forced you to buy a particular phone..

And, even though there are issues with other phones(build quality issues in OnePlus flagship, battery puffing issues in Samsung phones, etc.), he's more forgiving to them..
