Yes, brilliant diagnosis, you're right - I hadn't had the problem because I'd been using the fast charger ! I just used the slow charger & get no charging even if i wake it up after I have plugged in the slow charger I then have to disconnect then reconnect to get the phone to start charging ! I thought I had figured it out in the settings menu: Face ID & Passcode, USB Accessories, Turn OFF / ON to prevent accessories from connecting after more than one hour - That makes no difference ! What I seem to remember from Unbox Therapy is that he got one of the iPhones charging, left it to charge, came back a while later and discovered that it had stopped charging. So far I have not had that but then I charge it with the fast charger... Yesterday I found that the phone unpaired itself from the car (Mercedes 'Command' system) and I had to re-pair it again.....but then that could be the 'Command' system......£2500 for a load of German junk. The iPhone is trouble free and a bargain price compared to what I've got going on with that ! Many thanks for your reviews - I find them very informative & most helpful.

Apple hasn't stated what it is yet. Could be software, could be charging port, could be logic board. With the 8, they had issues with the charging port and logic board, so I'm actually leaning towards hardware problem since no other iOS 12 devices have the issue.

nell y unbow therapy found a bunch of issues with the charging but he was using the basic charging port that came with the box. Apple fixed this with the 12.1 beta update. These things happen. Apple should’ve included a faster charging but they didn’t do now they got to clean up their mess

Absolutely right! I have been using my Iphone Xs for about 2 years. I have encountered this problem recently after replacing a new battery. My phone turns off when I plug in and on back when I unplug it. Wireless charger fixed the problem. However, I haven't try using a fast charger yet!

They're cheaper to produce because they get away with putting old tech into $1000 phones. By not including the fast charger alone they increase their profit margin, add to that the much more basic operating system which isn't doing complex tasks like split screen and running AOD 24/7 and you've saved a few programmers. All little things that add up to a cheaper design/production. Quality on these high ends is equal though, when Samsung is producing screens and other hardware for Apple, how much different can quality be??

You do realise Samsung makes a lot of harward for the iphones, including the single most important thing, the screen. I've never had a android phone die from anything other than a cracked screen from dropping it. Seeing as we've been able to replace the batteries on everything up to the Note 8 easily with removable back covers, just what longevity problems are you talking about? My Note 8 battery still last as long as the day i got it 12 month ago. My Note 4 still works perfectly albeit with a cracked screen. LG G2, i only upgraded as i wanted a big screen, that's my current 2nd phone, and it's 5 years old. How long do you expect out of a phone? 10 years?

Mine doesn't charge even with the 29w fast charger when it is idle. If it becomes idle and I plug any lightning cable it doesn't charge even when i wake it up, but if re-insert the cable when it's awake no problem, also wireless charging no problem. I think only a software update can fix this.

My comment will probably go nowhere, but I tested my wife’s and my XS Max with the in-the-box 5W charger and both of them worked just fine. Along with 7.5, 10, 12 watt iPad and 3rd party chargers and 5 and 7.5 watt wireless chargers and none exhibited any issues. I hope it’s just some software fix they can push out for those who are having an issue. EDIT: Even as a long time iPhone user, I’ve always found their typical terrible responses to proven issues to be stupid. Also, not including a fast charger or even a FASTER charger (like a 12W) is facepalm worthy.

I used an iPad Pro charger on the iPhone Max and didn’t have any issue, so I think the matter is with the number of amperes each charger puts out. The standard may be too weak for the phone.

So....in the case that you plug in the charger when the screen of the phone is off it’s true: the screens doesn’t turn on and there is no indication of the phone receiving a charge...however leave it undisturbed for a couple of minute and the phone will start charging after giving the on screen indication. Apple has confirmed however that there is a software update lined up that will fix this MINOR annoyance

It's literally the way you hold your phone. Your hands at the perfect angle and grip and completely shut off all wireless connections. Barely touching it at all will maximize your signal but it will not be even half of it's best. That's the way it works apparently

I think the biggest problem is not that the phone is not charging, it's apple not acknowledging that it has a problem. When note 7 exploded Samsung acknowledged that it had a problem, tried to fix it and when it failed Samsung recalled all the units. That imho is much better way of doing business. Everybody makes mistakes and that's normal, addressing those mistakes and fixing them should also be a normal way to conduct business.

Tbh I switched to the iPhone Xs for many reasons from a galaxy s8 plus. Even though it was a solid phone one thing I hated was that I always had to check the phone before I charged it because it would sometimes not fast charge and say 44 hours till fully charged. I expected it to be a typo error or something but when I woke up the next day it only increased by 5 percent for 8 hours

The way I see it Apple has included a charger that is not capable of charging the Max due to changing something in the phone that makes it only respond to a higher voltage input but also included a bypass trigger which is tapping the screen to wake the phone. I’ve seen other posts on forums that after some time the phone will not charge no matter if awaken or not. But will charge fine with wireless charger or a higher input. So they must’ve either made the charger useless or changed something within the phone to make you purchase a better charger from them. Not sure. This is just my theory of the problem. For now I guess just use a fast charger till Apple “fix” this issue. I’ll say sorry in advance if anyone gets offended by what I said for God knows what reason. Good luck ay 🤙🏻

So the solution is buy a faster Charger or a USB to lighting port. Or a wireless charger Basically 💲💲💹💹 The phone that keeps on taking

I did solve all those probs 2 years ago mate, I switched to OnePlus 😁 the only thing I wish you would cover soon (now 6T is coming out) thier Customer Service. Its crap, its a customer service center from the 80’s Please mate adress them with this issue.. Dave Lee did that few month ago but we need you all guys to change that.. Cheers mate.. 🤙🏽🤙🏽

I doubt apple would issue a recal. They would blame the consumer, fix the problem, and then re release it with an extra S on the end.

First iPhone in years and disappointed that a $1300 phone has a charging issue at all. I use a fast charger and I have the issue period. No workaround at all.

I didn’t have any issues but I will say if anybody is thinking of wireless charging the iPhone X’s max think again it took my device 7 hrs on wireless charging and that’s with a 10 watt charger I returned it for fast charging fast charging is truly the best way to go

🇬🇧 To be fair nobody uses the charger that you get in the box to charge their phone. Most Apple users I know including myself use the iPad charger, I haven’t got the new iPhone, I decided not to buy it and stick with the Product Red 8 plus, I’m glad I did. I’ve always loved Apple products but recently I have noticed Apple have let their quality control slip which is a real shame considering how much there charging for the new phones.

Interesting fact: I have an iPhone Xs. And a whole lot of European plug chargers, all similar, all standard 5V/1A. From an iPad Mini of old, a few models of iPhone (SE, 7, 7 Plus) and the Xs charger an cable. All so identical I really don’t know which is which. So, I’ve been plugging these in my idle Xs... and no issue here. Make what you want of this....

Those 5 watt chargers are anemic at best. Even $200 phones come with fast chargers now and apple doesn't even give you a normal 10 watt charger. Back in the glory days of the ipod the 5 watt charger was fine, but now it simply won't do.

I haven’t had a problem with charging. Maybe because I haven’t used the standard wall adaptor. I either use the Anker PowerPort 4 (which I highly recommend) or the iPad wall adaptor.

Did you test to see if the phone was actually charging but it just didn't wake up? I.E. check the battery %, put the phone to sleep, plug in charge cord (phone doesn't wake up), wait, say, 30 minutes and check the phone to see if battery% went up.

I have an Ipad mini, purchased in 2013, exactly the same thing is happening when you plug in a non manufacturer charger with a lower than spec power rating.

Do you realize what this actually means? Even Apple's own testers never considered to use those chargers they include in the box while testing because it is just outright dumb.

For me, it was a problem with both the standard and fast charger. I restored the phone and it works fine now.

There’s an option in settings about USB connections and if the phone unlocked when connected. Once I turn this off it worked fine. Not sure if this is the same problem people have been having.....

We could have exchanges. Likely, seen as it's apple. They will almost certainly say that it's the users fault, and if they want a new phone, they're going to need to buy a new one.

Just try to turn off and turn on the "Raise to Wake" option. Worked for me.

People IMHO would have a reason to reject the phone as not fit for purpose as plugging a charger in and making sure the socket power is on should be all that is needed to charge the phone. Apple should be supplying charger that work even if the phone is not woken. £1200 for a phone that doesn't charge if not woken with the charger supplied is a massive inherent fault IMO and they should replace with a working charger . If customers reject the phone because of this any out of pocket expenses like the 24 month contract with a service provider should also be down to Apple to sort as it was bought as a package.
