Greer is not equating all penetration with sadism. She's stating that the violent strand of pornography, which degrades and humiliates the person being penetrated and which has now become mainstream, is sadistic. Which is, by definition, true.

You're in an internet comment section. I think in wider life, the quote 'No man can hate women as much as women hate other women' is far more appropriate. They're so critical of each other in a way that boggles our minds. Honestly, most women I know wonder why men have such a high opinion of them.

Men used to love and respect women but since feminism and the war against men in false allegations, divorce, child custody, alimony, jobs, education, media etc .....yes, we've come to despise women and regard them as dangerous to interact with. Ta ta ladies...falling marriage rates, birth rates, no mentoring, recruiting, collegiality. It makes life for men so much easier ......and we get to keep what we earn, do what we want, when we want, where we want. Women have emancipated us from being human doings. We are now human beings. Thank you.

@@millabasset1710 da fuck does that mean, what is male ancestry? your grandfathers and fathers, who celebrates that in the first place. No woman goes around celebrating their great great grandma. And if you mean that you wouldn't want to go around celebrating that your a man, not only does no one celebrate there gender - but that's also really dumb. Men are socialised in patriarchy to do shitty things - and so are women (but women are also socialised to be more arguable etc.) its not inherent at all. Also porn can be bad, but its not always, if you have control over yourself and dont get addicted its relatively fine (and reduces sex crime). Germaine Greer has some good takes, but overall she is a repugnant transphobe, and a bit hyperbolic in places.

Sadism is not limited to pain but as you rightfully say degradation and humiliation. If you go on to any mainstream free file sharing website based on a simple google search you will find videos of women being degraded and humiliated. The worry is that our gratification now exists on an axis with female (or even male) degradation and humiliation. It is importantl to note that Greer is not calling for legislation change but is expressing a wish that we resist consuming such degrading material.

The way Greer talks about porn and masturbation is that it's a choice over having a real relationship out of fear of emotional pain. For myself and probably most others, it's a kind of stop-gap solution in between real sex either from a one-night stand or from a relationship. Most men will masturbate even when in a relationship. It's not about replacing anything, it's about simple relief - like a coffee break at work.

"The person that is penetrated is degraded by the interaction" I'm not sure I agree with this conclusion. It implies the person doing the penetration has the power to denigrate while discounting the power of the individual who is being penetrated. Power is not automatically qualified by an act because there are other forms of power at play during the act of penetration. Women skilled in seduction do not feel disempowered by being penetrated. I have a problem with feminism when it ignores a woman's power by always defining her as powerless. The species would not have survived if women were as historically powerless as feminism often implies.

It could be that sadism in porn has become so normalised that we don't even recognise it as such anymore. It is true that Greer in general does have an 'anti-penetration' agenda but as I said before she does not (and nor do I) wish to see governmental censorship or regulation of the porn industry. To reduce the sadistic element in porn through education is her goal, albeit perhaps a slightly unrealistic one.

I always enjoyed Ms Greer-always a great speaker. It is true that porn isn't intimacy but the truth is for most men sex is viewed as multifactorial-it can, when you are with someone be ecstasy, on the other hand it can be bloody awful. But that's life. Men look at porn to orgasm-to relax, to escape from tension by being in a fantasy world-that's it. Sex is like a swizz army knife-it has many functions and uses.

I disagree with you there on the penis envy thing. It's not that she wants to be a man, as so many people seem to think that's what most feminists want, it's that I just don't think that she understands what most men are actually like. To be honest, there are very few men, in my opinion, who really understand women - I certainly have trouble with it.

Yes, Germaine is right. She is a very intelligent female. It does reinforce female stereotypes eg the pretty little sex kitten etc you see in pornmovies, the ultra virile macho male porn stars etc, all frolicking around in spas etc, having what appears to be good fun sexually... But, apart from being just plain ridiculous and boring, how bad are such over the top, hardly believable porn movies, really? I was invited by gentlemen to watch some and all we did was laugh our heads off at all the ridiculous things we saw on screen.Completely absurd, impossible in real life, though the plots were pretty boring ie the same plot all such movies have. They made us laugh precisely because they were so "unreal". You just could not believe them, like you might a serious true crime or true romance etc movie, where you might cry, get scared out of your wits etc because they are so believable. Now, if something is so unbelievable and boring, like nearly every pornmovies is, how can it possibly affect the viewer in any profound psychologically harmful way eg causemen to go out and rape women or women to take foolish risks with their sexual safety etc? You just have a good laugh at the over the top porno "action" on screen, which is actually good for releasing tension. However, although most pornmovies are harmless, as a responsible adult, I would never allow a child under a certain age eg the age of sexual consent, to watch them. Because their minds are still developing and they cannot judge what is over the top, unreal, almost cartoon like sexual behaviour in such porn movies and what is an adult example to follow eg be a sexy little female "kitten" type, dumb, helpless, cute etc, like you see in such porn movies, under the sexual control of some very hot, well endowed dominant macho male type.Thatmay not be such a good message or role model to present young girls, or even boys with, to navigate their sexual passage to adulthood.Maybe some mildly sexual teenage romance movies might be better for young people to watchfor harmless fun. I notice that modern porno movies have now started to change. They now acknowledge feminism and multiculturalism eg have sexual partners acting on screen from different cultures, though very little about the plot ever changes. Still boring as ever, only the actors have different colour skin etc.Or speak with an accent, wear a hijab or sari or whatever typical ethnic costuming. You see lip service being paid to feminists eg some of the characters who appear, represent typical feminist stereotypes of women. But, lip service is all it is, still. The feminists appear to control the on screen sexual action. But the men are still the ones in charge of who does what to who etc in all the sexual action. Sometimes the liberated chicks will get to take a more dominant role, but this is only to give the males a bigger thrill, sexually. In other words, the liberated women in porn movies are, like the ones in normal life, work etc, still largely controlled, dominated, manipulated, used etc by the men...Only now the men do "remote control", invisibly, whereas in the bad ole' days of unabashed patriarchy, they flaunted their male power and dominance in very public, clearly visible ways. So, feminist porno movies, like modern day feminism, is really a bit of a joke. For starters, if a woman was a seriously liberated feminist, she would not be working in the porno industry. Period. Not even as a feminist porn star, showing that women can be as good as men at sex. There is nothing a seriously liberated woman needs to prove to anybody about her femaleness. She just is. She might find it titillating (excuse the pun) to make movies about bare breasted women frolicking around naked, having sex with any men they can catch, whatever.. For other women or even men to get a laugh out of. But, she would probably own and run the porno film company herself and decide how women/men are to be portrayed. Not have some probably criminal, dominant, macho Man, patriarchal male head of some porno empire tell her how to be, how women are to be, what their relationship with men will be ie subservient etc.More satisfactory, less boring, gun porn relevant to our era could be produced if more women got into this industry but in a way that enables them to control the movies made eg as new entrepreneurs. That there is a demand and human need for such an industry is undeniable. Much as feminists and moralistic religious types hate it. Otherwise, it would not have survived till now. So, why not update and develop it in a way that makes it more relevant and accessible to all, instead of just a 'dirty minded' few who dare watch such crap?It could serve a useful purpose eg relieve anxiety by making stressed out tired working people laugh. The lonely, elderly and disabled people who crave sexuality but cannot access it can get it vicariously, from a screen, which is not ideal, but better than the frustration of sexual deprivation. So what if some females on screen strut around like silly little sex kittens, in frilly hot pink costumes or as little Lolita's etc. These types already exist in real life society. Always have. And are unlikely to ever disappear. No matter how hard feminists try to stamp out these and other female stereo types. Fact is, some love them. And they are not always just men. Some women like them, too. So why not just enjoy them and all their sexual antics on the screen? Maybe some feminists hate these stereotypes because they wish they could be like that themselves and have such sexual fun. But know they cannot be. Well, have your sexual fun as some other female type. These female porno stereotypes do not have the monopoly on sexuality and fun so they can deprived all other women of the basic female right to be joyous sexually and express this aspect of being female. How about the serious, senior, intellectual female type, who could be very sexually appealing because she might be very mysterious, smart, ingenious, creative etc. Some men or even other women are bound to enjoy this type, if only someone would create her and put her on a screen in some porno action movie that is a bit less boring than most are. And does not portray all women as dumb, gullible, sex kittens etc. Some clearly are so. That's OK. It's their personality type. But some are not.But can still be equally sexually exciting, a turn on etc. So, why not try putting some of the other kinds in porno movies? Eg try some clever Police detective women or maybe a few forensic scientist types in laboratories, working on bodies, in their white lab coats. Give the CEO executive female type heading corporations or in politics, dressed in her power suit a miss, though. Too boring. And the teacher and nurse image, too. Been over used in porno movies. Try a female intrepid explorer type who sails the world single handed on a tiny raft, nearly dies, ends up ship wrecked on some Pacific island paradise place fill of gorgeous hunks desperate for a female to save them from climate change threatening to submerge their home land...The possibilities are only limited by one's creative imagination... Now, how will this lot survive? And somehow keep the human race going, given that she is still desirable but now peti menopausal and can't reproduce, despite an abundance of fine, virile, strong men? Maybe they will improvise a womb creating operation, to give one of the guys a womb? This is where sci go begins to merge into porno movies, with 'gender' issues thrown in, for added interest...I might be motivated to watch such a porn movie, provided the sex scenes do not take up the entire movie. That would be too boring to watch. Seen one, you've seen them all..

Something to consider about pornography is the type of man attracted to it. A strong confident man secure in his knowledge that he is attractive as a partner to women and understands his role in her pleasure and takes pride in his ability to give pleasure would have little use for pornography. Pornography attracts weak men and these men are hardly a threat to women because they are likely intimidated by women. Weak men are dangerous to women but not because of pornography. The pornography is only an indicator of weakness but the weakness was there before the pornography.

You know, that: "paper doll" of pornography is actually a representation of yourself. I think we should all spend time getting to know: "that girl that other men cannot steal", because pleasuring yourself is not a meaningless act. It is an act of *self-discovery!*

Porn is escapism like videogames, music, movies etc... I think that if you see porn as a way to learn to have sex you have a problem but that said. If we were to use this logic wouldnt horror movies turn us into monsters? Watching movies about the vietnam war are going to turn us into ptsd ridden veterans?

I think Greer is too much of an ideologist. Madonna/Whore complex seems to get omitted ( a topic that needs greater analysis). Pornography is not appreciation of intimacy of the male/female anatomy..it is exploitation, violence, debauchery, and ultimately the complete degradation of women (there is no liberation in it)...we cannot change, and nor should we, that woman are at the receiving end of the sexual act....it is so ingrained within our psyche and cultures. We have more words to degrade women than any other demographic, our religions degrade women reducing them to mere breeders (all of religions!)(it may have been different at some point in time but that is irrelevant today), and even our languages outside of just words : stick it to her, she was asking for it, barefoot and pregnant, he throws like a girl, he whines like a girl, she should keep her legs closed, female hysteria, etc....the scientific world has even degraded women on so many levels. Pornography is a visual aspect of female degradation and anyone who skirts around this is fooling themselves...we just have to look at the damage it has done to relations and status of women... women are apart of the work force now, but prostitution is here, women and children (more so now than ever before) are sexually, physically and emotionally exploited and we have made a 'f**king' industry out of it. Greer is trying to 'soften' the industry...that is like being 1/2 racist...when will we learn that our intrinsic value is not just our sexuality (we are complex beings)....we have made it so, that our intrinsic value is in our sexuality and nothing else compares or take front stage; it has to change or we will be faced with discrimination forever.... We have to change our value system, in that we have to learn to appreciate our humanity above all (the intrinsic values that make us human beings). The value we have in being human beings, in being positive contributors to healthy societies (love, compassion, honor, trust, nurturing, intelligence, etc..).....sexuality (which is heavily dependent on behavior, which in turn is dependent on perceptions) needs to be taken down quite a few notches in our value system, and in place we need to put values that actually contribute to the well being of our species...sexual exploitation is simply primal (it removes intrinsic values making women, and children disposable sexual commodities). I would like to believe we are capable of being much more than that. Just look at men in porn (they are not degraded, and most men would say that have the best job ever!)....how women are viewed in society is a reflection of how men view them, and how men view themselves...no sane loving parent wants to see their child grow up to be a porn star (and the term porn star is yet another deception as if being a porn star is a positive thing!). The porn industry wants young, impressible women...many still teens. Our brains are not fully developed until 25 years old. The frontal lobe is want develops last - a cruel trick for sure- it is really the command center for processing complex consequences.....really in a nut shell, stop supporting porn, and make sure your children are aware of the consequences...One will argue that it will go underground...well it is already underground, and eventually is moves up...bestially, snuff films, rape films, all apart of the pornographic industry....it will be a hard earned battled to hold people accountable for distributing, possessing and part-taking in it, but the alternative is far worse...we cannot just accept pornography, soft of otherwise, because the suffering involved will never end, until society at large demands that it does.

She makes it sound like the facts that pornography is a business and that businesses make money are (1) a revelation and (2) per se bad. But I'm not persuaded that pornography is bad. Here are some other facts: (A) there is a great deal of demand for pornography (porn sites are among the most visited); (B) women also view porn in large numbers (they account for about 40% of viewers; (C) most porn is paid for by advertising but effectively free to the user; (D) there is a growing genre of porn made by women specifically for women. I think it's more accurate to say that, like all forms of entertainment, most porn is of poor quality but there is some that is of high quality and even artistic. And too much but certainly not all of it is exploitative.

Thanks. Seems to me just another form of misogyny, a transference of the disdain for the female sex as applied to men who think of themselves as women ( whatever for ?when you were born male or designated male or appear to be male!); and including women who think of themselves as men (how dare they! ): both gender traitors as it were. Unfortunate in my opinion. I have read the charts of such children in pediatric surgery. Most unfortunate. And to spend one's life struggling with this physically and socially as well...most unfortunate. Who would choose this? It cannot be easy to deal with. A private issue but as we are social creatures impossible to hide forever or create a separate society. Human rights have to prevail and the record thus far on all human rights issues bodes ill for that anytime soon. Germaine Greer is entitled to her well thought out opinions. No one can compel individuals to silence or acceptance of what they find unacceptable. Law is what makes it possible to live together ad o e until such day as humanity is sufficient whatever the package.

In my experience, those who try and take the high ground on pornography watch it themselves, it's odd to follow a movement based on the idea that women have freedom of choice and then do the exact same thing you accuse men of doing by denigrating that person for the choice they've made, the only credibility this argument has is that males do make up the vast majority of the consumer market when it comes to pornography

Women should deal with their own porn problem before they criticise men's porn. What I call "lady porn" is a bigger cultural problem. Lady porn is Hallmark movies, Fifty Shades of Grey, Sex and the City, etc. Women really believe this crap and it harms men. I have some of the female imperatives (6 feet tall, 6 figure income) but I'm still a big steaming turd compared to Christian Grey and The Christmas Prince. Lady porn culture reminds me of this constantly, and reminds women too. Meanwhile, I don't know any men who think porn is an adequate representation of women.

You're not really free from women if you're relying on videos of them. I think that's a false equivalence on your part. You're comparing an object (equivalent objects are available to men) to a form of media that involves actual people in a capitalist, mysoginistic society and the problems that inevitably come from that.

Nobody expects you to abstain from masturbation or sex. But those things don't require pornography. Porn didn't exist for all of human history until relatively recently & people still managed to fulfill their sexual needs. There are also fleshlights, sex dolls & all kinds of other devices if you don't have a willing partner. Porn is a deadly industry full of exploitation, suicide, drug abuse, disease & violence. It's actually far worse than stripping or even prostitution in terms of what goes on. Women are beaten & raped on the set all the time...forced to do things they didn't consent to. And porn has gone from 'regular' sex to dangerous fetish material like "rosebudding" (i.e. rectal prolapse), bestiality & gang bangs that actually traumatize the actresses long after the shoot is over. "Why don't they just quit & leave if it's so bad?" Because many are forced into the industry by their pimps/boyfriends, or lured in by producers who promise them stardom when they're barely 18 & naive, only to turn the tables on them once they're on set. It's very sad. Try watching porn AFTER you climax & you'll see it differently. Watch from the woman's point of view. You'll probably see a few bruises on her body and signs of drug abuse. If you lack the empathy to care about porn stars, consider this: men who watch porn are often afflicted with erectile dysfunction in sexual encounters with real women. They require the "rush" of porn just like a drug addict requires a dopamine rush from their drugs.
