what a dumb thing to say.... Iraq has a population growth of 3% a year.. where will the money come from for their food ??? maybe just have the oil companies move out and let them go back to their traditional ways of life... let a few million starve... It feels that way, but first, we’re better informed than we used to be, and second there has never been a greater time to start capping fossil fuel dependence. It’s not happening as fast as it needs to, but it is happening. Not in Iraq, sadly. But globally. Citizens are victims of their governments and corruption.

We live in a culture whose blindness to the plight of people like these is fuelled by our desperate desire to never experience it. Money rules over compassion, greed trumps kindness, and all we are left with is watching it happen and sympathising. They need change on a grand scale, but unless it's profitable they'll never see it.

Reminds me of when the Iraqis ignited all the Kuwaiti oil wells on fire upon their departure of Kuwait. It took colossal efforts to extinguish the fires that damaged the environment and caused health issues prominent till today. Oil companies make money in agreement with the government. Igniting oil wells on fire out of spit served no one and nothing, it was an act of pure evil and envy.

The teenage girl responded that she had ten siblings. That explains the staggering increase of population in Iraq. I am originally from Iraq, from the northern region where parenthood progressively becomes rational in that on average a family bears 2-3 children, I always heard of astonishing size of families in the south and west of the country where tribal and religious mentality is the dominant mildest. In the Shia region of the south any limit on birth rate is tantamount to blasphemy in the judgements of the religious establishment, the ultimate authority there. I say this as a fact without judgment. Population explosion in Iraq, like most of the Mideastern countries, places crippling pressure on the resources and infrastructure. And with that, environmental damage is an inevitable cost.

These first world multinational conglomerates need to be held accountable for their exploitation for profit at the expense of these poor children . They have no qualms or conscience of their actions except for bottom line profits for shareholders. Lots of first world country citizens will protest about the environment and greenhouse gases and hydrocarbons etc but they themselves, who have pensions and investments lodged in these companies don't even realise that their pension money is tainted with the blood of these children.

@@TheStockwell You believe there are no disease caused by the mining for the metals used in EV in places like Africa? I personally don't mind if EV is the future, but if you wish to compare do it honestly. If we now have something like 1% of EV, what is the scale of their problems if we have 100%, maybe those fires, mining etc. would have actual negative impact then. On the other hand, perhaps in the future the batteries can be recycled better so mining might not increase forever.
