The Iraqi Tabuk Sniper rifle is based on the famous Yugoslavian M70 type Kalashnikov rifles. Boasting a 23in barrel and manufactured on Yugoslavian/Serbian tooling, in Al-Qadisiya, Iraq. This specific reproduction rifle was made by Two Rivers Arms in Oklahoma.
While many see this as a way of extending the 7.62x39 cartridge's distance, the rifle was categorized to only have a max effective range of 600m. However the rifle has lived on to be an effective "urban sniper" weapon or a platoon-level marksman's rifle, as the marksman is able to interchange and cross-land ammunition/magazines with infantry regulars. This directly solves many logistical issues that a large standing army with lesser logistical support may face.
Fast forward into the 90's and 2000's, US forces entering Iraq now face the Tabuk Sniper as a rifle encountered in the hands of both insurgents and friendly troops from the region.

It’s very true that many people think of Iraq as a complete pushover. Fact is, the Iran-Iraq war was a brutal conflict that lasted 8 years and cost Iraq dearly in both manpower and resources. A great book to read is called ‘Saddam’s War’ in which one of Iraq’s most capable generals who wasn’t purged by Saddam (he even led the final defense of Baghdad against invading US forces) stated that Iraq lost nearly every single one of their special forces units in the Iran Iraq war. By the time the US actually fought the Iraqis in the first Gulf war, huge sections of their military just weren’t that interested in fighting a war many saw as pointless. Even during the invasion, vast majority of the Iraqi military walked away from their positions and took their personal weapons home. And here’s the interesting part…Iraq had one of the largest arsenals of weaponry on this planet. Nearly 100 million tons of weapons and ordinance literally vanished from ammunition depots across the country that the US coalition failed to secure. There’s a great link to an article I have about a sprawling industrial complex that spans over a dozen miles, which produced Iraq’s heaviest weaponry and explosives, which was completely stripped down of its contents and contributed heavily to the insurgency that soon followed. So overall, those who think of Iraq as a pushover fail to understand the circumstances, and that type of mentality is what causes us to underestimate our opponents. Before this video, I doubt many people would think of an AK platform as one that could reach out to 800 meters, consistently. But here we have a great example. Just goes to show, don’t judge a book by its cover, and don’t judge an opponent as pushovers. I’ve met plenty of Iraq veterans who didn’t think of the insurgents as pushovers though…

And a Type I at that. According to Ian, the SMG replica of the Type I FG has a better trigger that the Type II, a manual bolt hold open (can come in handy since the type I has a stripper clip guide) and it's also more true to the original since both have a milled receiver (and Ian's Type I FG has a brass deflector, which is correct as some late Type I FGs have it). The Type I usually had the ZFG42 scope, which is based on the soviet PU. They also used the ZF-4 on the Type I with a slightly different mount (two tightening knobs instead of just one).

EVEN though the Tabuk isn't exactly an accurate rifle, it does represent my idea of a "perfect" DMR spec rifle.... 1) ammo shared with a basic rifleman. 2) moderate magnification optics, 3) access to the open sights for close range engagements and 4) operating system familiar to any personnel in the squad.

Excellent shooting and video! A couple of observations that I would like to offer on the Iran Iraq war, a fair bit of fighting was done in built up areas, the opening offensive was against Khoramshahr that took over a month for the Iraqi army to capture because of the stout defence put up by the civilians and the paramilitary forces (the regular army was too slow to mobilise due to having its officer class decimated by revolutionary government purges). Where the battles were in open ground it was trench warfare of ww1 era tactics with massive human wave attacks, due to the embargoes that Iran was put under after the 1979 revolution and the American embassy siege, Iran was facing massive shortages of war materials and knew that it could not compete with Iraq in a war of attrition. Iran's advantage as the revolutionary government saw it was that it had a much larger population and could sustain larger human losses than the Iraqi forces could. In this context 7.62x39 would arguably be more effective than a 7.62x54 Dragunav. Pre 1979 Iran was the regional power under the Shah with the latest US fighter bombers, British tanks and German weapons, Iran was producing G3 rifles under licence, I have not been able to determine whether it was building rifles from receivers made in Germany and some locally produced parts or producing everything in house, as some Iranian G3's have German markings on the receivers. I hope that adds some context to the history.

The idea that AKM rifles can't be very accurate has more to do with user expectations than the gun's own mechanical limitations, as AKMs have been found to be as good as 2 MOA. Tabuks were specifically chosen from the best of Iraq's available Kalashnikovs with that in mind. Mind, on average, AKMs won't comfortable do 4'' groups at 200 yards, but enough can to make a tolerable if not spectacular DMR.

My personal take on the longer barrel with the 7.62x39 is that it may not get much more velocity but provides more surface area for a longer time to give more spin stabilization to the bullet itself and a full burn of propellent keeping the extreme spread of velocity and BC to a minimum from shot to shot. For example instead of shots having having a spread of 50-120 FPS it may bring it down to 10-20 fps keeping the path of travel for the projectile more consistent. Just my though on it.

Going back and forth here between the comments and the video. I will just keep editing this post. Barnaul is probably the closest you are going to get to a consistent match load before going to something expensive like Lapua. I was using Hornady SST in mine but I was getting similar performance out of my rifle as if a I had been using the much cheaper Barnaul. For my next competition I am planning on running Barnaul JHP in it. Let’s just say that a certain small but well known manufacturer has some very unkind things to say about Miles and some of his knowledge. If ya’ll want. I can provide both a Zastava M-76 and a Zastava M-91 for you to use in your tests. According to TRA, the Romanian LPS is also fully correct to use on this rifle.

I'm a big fan of these iraqi rifles so I was very excited to see the teaser yesterday. This one is next on my build list, I just need to have TRA engrave a few rear sight blocks for me. There is a variant of this rifle with a solid stock, no scope rail, non-threaded muzzle, and the front sight/bayonet assembly from a type 56. I really can't imagine what they were thinking when they were built, I would imagine they were for parade use but have nothing to support that at all. There are few examples in Rob Stott's book (volume 12). I built a clone a few years ago and it's always fun to bring to the range.

AKM=M4 Tabuk=M16A4 with ACOG The Tabuk allows for local marksman firepower to be brought to bear, without encumbering the unit/soldier with the problems that come with a full power DMR like an SVD, PSL, SR25, etc. Definitely an interesting idea, that is completely counter to the original soviet concept for the rifle.

Great video as always guys. Would be very curious to see more info on how barrel length/velocity affects the accuracy of 7.62x39. I'm also wondering if that contributes to the preconception that the SKS is more accurate than the AK. 20 inch barrel vs 16. I know the Chinese SKS in your test displayed some vertical stringing and was less accurate than a typical AK. Would send you my Yugo SKS for testing. 22" barrel, non-chromed bore, and one awful trigger.

Some people have been doing velocity testing on .22lr and how barrel length effects it. Seems when you get to about 18-20 you don't get any extra velocity, as you stated once the powder is burned you aren't going to get anything extra velocity. The longer barrels like 22, 26, ect seem to have lower velocity, but also lower standard deviation. It would be a very cool video to get some velocity studies on this rifle and compare to a 16", 12", and 8" and see velocity shifts and more importantly see if there's any significant changes in standard deviation. Very cool video none the less!

Because it still is... Man, it was the very last, mass produced (in the millions), semi automatic, wood and steel, clip loading, bayonet wielding, superbly reliable, simply effective, monster's and gentleman's rifle ever made... Ironically, it was a Russian invention. That is to say that, the one nation on planet earth who could really care less about looks, and only care about functional utility, just so happen to invent the most mature and complete iteration of the self loading rifle in history. For them it just simply must work. Which just so happens to be released at the very zenith of WW2 rifle deaign, only to be supplanted like five minutes later, by a select fire, high capacity rifle three orders of magnitude more effective. But none of that negates the still usable real world practicality of having a decently powerful semi auto SKS that is thin,, compact, with a short length of pull, that handles well tactically, and if desired, can run bananas or drums. I prefer to think of it as a well refined fighting tool from a different era. Especially the Yugoslavian ones. Where does one find 22mm NATO rifle grenades, because those look like fun? As comfortable as a good hunting rifle, but with exponentially greater capability than a standard bolt gun. Built around the hard realities of lessons learned in actual combat experience, having tactical utility and battlefield reliability as the highest criteria in mind. And ease of production matters. Really good guns get made in very high numbers. Because they are repeatedly a good compromise between cost and effectiveness. Henry can go eight hundred yards on 7.62x39mm, I'll be content with anything decisive inside of three hundred. Because how often would you actually need to engage a known viable threat outside that distance? Can you identify that threat with enough certainty to feel morally justified in pulling that trigger? But if you do have to suddenly decide to squeeze, making hits with a decent SKS is very possible. Probable. Even likely.

@@keepbman One additional bonus I think, to running stripper clips, outside of just being kinda cool, is the weird little thought process as you are looking down into the chamber thumbing 10 in the hole... That is, just like running a bolt gun, or a shotgun... you only have this many rounds to work with, so make 'em count. Call it a psychological force multiplier that strongly encourages precisely accurate shot placement, lol. (And yet, in seconds, with a partial field strip, you can drop the internal mag, and provided you bought quality, slap in a quick detach 20/30/75 magazine in the rifle, and maintain a sustained base of fire in an emergency.) Same rifle, different purpose. Plenty useful.
