Created during the Iran-Iraq War, the Tabuk Sniper is one of those oddballs of historical firearms. Although referred to as a "Sniper" rifle, it really never was one to begin with. Chambered in 7.62x39mm, the rifle was intended as a squad or platoon support weapon to compliment the RPK within Saddam's army. It is essentially based on the Yugo M76 but not chambered in 8mm Mauser, built of course by Yugoslavian engineers cooperating with Iraq.

so in short: an AK manufactured in Iraq, modified with an inspiration from Mauser and help from Yugoslavia, with a muzzle flash hider from a Russian machine gun and the scope from a Romanian DMR. Tutti-frutti.

I kind of have a soft spot for oddball Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian knock offs like the Tabuk and that Beretta M1951 derivative called the Tariq. No idea why, they have super rough finish and fitting and are nowhere near the standard of the stuff they're based off of, but they're kind of neat. Sometimes the knock offs have this earnest quality to them that makes them more interesting and distinctive than something that was built extremely well.

If you dont consider most AK's that are non Russian to be knock offs, then i would not even really consider this a knock off. Its very unique and this variant is specific to Iraq only. No other nation produced a AK like this. You could say Yugoslavia but they were not chambered in the AK round and they used milled receivers. The Yugo's were actually more so snipers vs the Tabuk which is more of a DMR.

The Tabuk Sniper Rifle is an Iraqi Semi-automatic designated marksman's rifle, made from a modified version of the Zastava M70 assault rifle, itself a variant of the AKM. The Tabuk Rifle, like all the AKM and Dragunov SVD derivatives made in Iraq, was manufactured at the Al-Qadissiya Establishments[4][5][6] using machinery sold to Iraq by Zastava Arms of Yugoslavia, at a time when power was still firmly in the hands of Saddam Hussein.Zastava Arms of Yugoslavia originally developed this rifle from its experience in making its M70 rifles (a variant of the AKM with some minor differences from the original), particularly the M76.[7] All of the rifles in the M70 series share what is traditionally considered an RPK style receiver, that is the receiver is made with a thicker gauge of sheet metal formed over a larger and heavier trunnion. While this does add to weight, it has a positive effect on durability which is why the modification came about. The Yugoslavian version of the RPK, the Zastava M72, is a longer barreled member of the M70 family and is the weapon upon which the Tabuk is based.The barrel length of the Iraqi Tabuk rifle is 23.6 inches - slightly longer and thinner than a Yugoslavian M72 barrel, but much longer than a traditional AKM or the M70 (16.25 inches). The Tabuk, like the M72, has a provision for muzzle attachments in the typical Russian thread pattern of 14×1mm left hand thread, which means that it can accept several variations of Soviet flash hiders and muzzle brakes, as well as Soviet-designed sound suppression devices.

"sniper" is the designation it was given from collectors and enthusiasts to distinguish one from another and the name just kind of stuck..... Iraq made a wide variety of Tabuk rifles from Short carbines and DMR's to spikers, they even made a AK74 for export sales. Iraq never gave them different designations and referred to them all as simply Tabuk.

M-76 is not a sniper rifle, and was never intended to be one. It's a DM rifle that is intended to give a squad some long range capability, but you are also expected to perform in CQB role with your squad, just like guys(2 of them per squad) with M72 (RPK variant) light machine guns. That is a basic layout of our infantry squad, seven M70(AKM variant), two of them with rocket lounchers, 2 M72 and a "sniper", basically a DM, with an M76. We have different hardware for true snipers, dependent on the mission at hand, and M-76 is usually carried by the spotter.

I was not talking about Tabuk, I was talking about Zastava M-76 which he mentioned in this video, and it is 8mm Mauser (7,92 X 57mm), long barreled riffle based on AK action. On training course you are expected to be effective with it at the range of 800m(880 yards), which is in my opinion long range, and yet it's really not a snipers weapon, except in certain circumstances when it suits the mission at hand.

Yeah Bee Well, the AK was never intended to be a really accurate rifle. It was designed for rough handling by poorly trained users, and it has been the most successful military weapon in history, meeting and exceeding all goals. The civilian versions are not much different than what I saw collected from the zips in Vietnam, at least in the stamped receiver versions. I think the milled versions are better, but the barrels on any of them wave like noodles when fired. Mine are as accurate as I expected, not disappointed there. Never a stoppage or jam on any ammo, and the steel case stuff can vary 2 grains on powder charge. Don't believe it? Knock out about 20 rounds from a batch and weigh them. The bullets are all over the place as well. I like them for what they are, but I don't have high expectations on accuracy. That said, shame on the ass of anybody I'm shooting at at 100 yards.

@TheBic4 Here are some recommendations: Because the TABUK DMR is in 7.62x39 caliber, just buy a Zastava M70B3 (M70B3 doesn't have a grenade launcher sights on the gas chamber, hence the only thing you have to worry about is a longer firing barrel) and take it to a gunsmith in order to get a 23'' barrel, as everything else on the M70B3 is EXACTLY THE SAME. Other than that, well, you don't have much of a choice, as the only alternative that exists is an LMG, the Zastava M72 (externally the handguard has two airflow slots instead of three and the barrel unlike the TABUK's 23'' is 2'' shorter, more adapted for prolonged firing, with cooling fins that help with heat dissipation). Both use the same caliber 7.62x39, as well as the same M70/AKM 30 round magazines, but since the TABUK is just an M70B3 with a 23'' barrel, it would seem it's the closest starting platform to work with, less hassle when it comes to bare minimum modifications, aka longer barrel and that's it. I hope this helps... Best regards from Serbia.

So it's essentially a designated marksman's rifle. Considering that the 7.62x39mm can punch out to a solid 500m effectively, it lends itself well as an intermediate cartridge to harass enemy troops beyond the effective range of their armament (read: shortcomings of the 5.56x45mm standard round issued to most NATO troops). I have no real opinion on either calibre, but the Tabuk Sniper seems like the natural development of a squad marksman weapon. Being able to exchange ammunition with your squadmates certainly makes it fit well on a modern battlefield, and a 400-500m effective range with decent optics is nothing to sneeze at. Can't hold a candle to 7.62x51mm of course, but that's another category altogether.
@T_D_B_
@T_D_B_ 6 жыл бұрын
Dylan Wight so x39 is more effective at 500 than 556? I'm not so sure i but it. I'll have to check ballistics tables.
@dylanwight5764
@dylanwight5764 6 жыл бұрын
The 5.56mm NATO has some serious sway at longer ranges. It was designed based on data which found that typical combat ranges took place between 100-400m on average. 5.56mm NATO was designed as a high velocity round for excellent penetration at typical combat ranges, however it suffers from being light weight and prone to inaccuracy at longer combat ranges. The 7.62mm doesn't have the superb ballistics of the 5.56mm NATO at shorter ranges, being a slower, heavier round that sacrifices penetration for stability. However, it *is* a more accurate round at longer ranges in excess of 400m. The Tabuk Sniper takes advantage of this property, even if its overall applicability is limited in a typical firefight. The point here is that during Iraq, it was found that combat ranges had increased since Vietnam, since urban and open-ground combat had once again become a common sight. For this reason, the US Army has been investigating a return of 7.62mm NATO for use in a squad's "designated marksman" rifle. The M14 might soon be returning to the battlefield to give a typical squadron the means to push out past the 400m effective limit of their M16s.

I'm no ballistics expert. But it seems like it was a silly decision for the Iraqis to've fielded a rifle with such a long barrel for the 7.62x39mm. On a side note, it might be kinda cool to see the Oklahoma City company reproduce their some of their replicas in a more "America friendly" round (the 308 or 223, for instance). (Adding a left-side charging-handle, that still nevertheless ejects to the right, a last round bolt hold-open, a mag-well instead of rock-in, & backwards compatibility with AR-style magazines wouldn't hurt either....but dare to dream.)

7.62x39 is simply not a long range ammo, i am surely not the greatest shot but out of all the most used rifle rounds (308 win, 7.62x54r, 223 rem, 5.45x39) this is definetly the least round i would choose for that role. I get why they did it -for ammo convenience and avoiding confusion- but immagine being forced to be the guy who is supposed to be the team marksman with a rifle useless at more then 600m (and lets be honest you are not going to hit anything at that range). Performance whise i think a regular m16a4 with an ACOG is more of a marksman rifle that this is.
@T_D_B_
@T_D_B_ 6 жыл бұрын
revolverDOOMGUY no one ever really said it was a great long range round. But a common supply chain seemed to take precedence. There's a good reason you don't see other countries like Russia making this config. It is not really optimal.

The word is sometimes pronounced with two syllables as ka-shay, but this pronunciation is not considered standard and may be viewed as a mistake by people who know French. Both words have French roots, which may account for the confusion. Cache is from cacher, meaning to hide... look it up, you ass

I know that this pronounciation is correct for that language. But you wouldn't say that "Some companies use parts kits from Polska to build AK's for American market." or "Turkijye military firearms have a tendency to be relatively low quality.", would you? That's the point, you speaking in english, so pronounce it in english, you're speaking in pashto, pronounce it in pashto (or whatever dialect).
