While not a homestead, I did grow up on a farm in rural MI and the gun we used the most was a .22lr bolt action rifle with a 2-7x scope. Hardly a week went by where we didn’t need to shoot some critter or bird getting into something they shouldn’t.

If it was my wild card to pick, I'd have gone for a lever action .45-70. If reloading or purchasing new ammo becomes difficult, you can always go back to the original formula of a hard cast lead bullet, and 70 grains of black powder. You just have to clean it a lot more often. A nice stainless steel version would stop a lot of the inherent corrosion of shooting black powder.

As a fellow Homesteader most of the other homesteaders that I know doesn't have quite a bit of money to buy expensive firearms so we're more out to buy the more budget-friendly type of firearms that would be great if you could do a video on what is the best budget homesteading firearms for the money
@HomesteadingPatriot

Im a college grad and homesteading with the family, budget is important to me. A shotgun is a good versatile tool mossberg 500 or remington 870 are decent at the price point. A 22 is good for small game and pests and the ammo is cheap. Ruger 10/22 is affordable and a decent gun. You can get a 9mm handgun for protection at relatively lower price, Taurus g3c is a good bet. People talk about a big cartridge for hunting, but how likely are you to take that 300+ yard shot in your area? If you want a defensive semi auto rifle, you could do a lot worse than building a Palmetto State AR. You can always check Gunbroker for SKS' still relatively affordable and the ammo is cheaper than 5.56 online right now.

When I think of homesteading, I think of the cheapest, most practical top 5. 1. AR15 - I believe we should all own three different lengths of AR's at least. 2. Ruger 10/22 - I own 2 and I'll probably buy another one. 3. 9mm full sized pistol - Glock, M&P, Walther, CZ, SIG, FN, HK, Canik, Arex 4. 12 gauge - simple pump like a maverick 88 with 8 round tube 5. 308 battle rifle/ DMR - preferably heavy barreled for heavy fire 6. Long barreled bolt in heavy caliber 308/ 6.5Crd/ 30-06/ or bigger Needs to be well scoped and dialed in.. 7. Lever action 30-30 -- Are you really even American if you don't own one?

I'd honestly cut the battle rifle unless it's pulling double duty and replacing both the AR and the bolt gun. No real reason for anti-personnel redundancy if you already have three lengths of AR to choose from, and little practical reason to relegate autoloader designs to animal control or hunting, barring perhaps the occasional pack of boars or moose visit. Rest of the list is solid tho.

@@michaelturk7237 Yeah.. but I have an AR10 and also a G3 type clone-- and I have to say that I prefer them, and would trade half of my AR's to keep the AR10. It certainly doesn't feel redundant-- they have more capabilities. You can reach farther than an AR and you can handle CQB work better than a bolt gun. It definitely has it's place and is fairly high on my list; that comes from personally experience.

@@michaelturk7237 AR10 .. hands down. The G3 is too heavy, the forward charging handle is actually in a bad place IMO, it doesn't have very good rail space.. They at least have the top rail welded on now, so you can put optics on them easy now; you're better off getting an FAL or M1A; or better off- just get an AR10.. I bought a DB10 for $750 some years back, and it's STUPID accurate. It uses the SR25 standard: receiver sets. I've seen them sell on gbroker for $1300 a year ago... So I wish I would have bought 2 or 3 of them while they were still cheap. But even the PSA ar10 is good. M&P 10's used to have 5R rifling barrels and were insanely accurate also -- but IDK if they still make them that way or if they have cut corners now. I usually build my AR15's from parts kits, but I haven't seen many AR10 parts kits, and they also have incompatible standards: Being the Armalite AR10 standard, KAC SR25 standard, and DPMS LR308 standard, also the POF Revolution" has it's own standard; they basically crammed an AR10 into an Ar15 sized rifle. That's a good one to get if you don't mind proprietary parts.. Otherwise, you can get a SCAR, KAC SR25, SIg 716, HK mr762, DD5, Wilson Combat AR10 Ranger,. but those are gonna cost you up to $4k.. You can get an MDR or RFB or Tavor 308, if you like bullpups.. You're better off getting a PSA pa10, Springield Saint 308, M&P10, Rock River LAR8, DB10, or a brand name Armalite AR10... "Nutnfancy has a good AR10 playlist to sift through.

Lots of cool ideas have unforseen difficulties. For instance, many 22 conversions are not accurate enough for small game hunting. You may try a half dozen or more types of 22 ammo before you find one that will shoot half-way decent

@kevin pierson for large brown bear you need heavier bullet that you will not find loaded in a 308, seen bear absorb 3 220 grain rounds why I said 30-06 or larger, 338 win mag is better.

I've heard good things about the 350 legend. Can be chambered in single shot, ar, or bolt actions. And heard they are pretty good for recoil sensitive people.
@mfallen6894

I've got an AR upper for 350L and have taken a deer with the round. It's pretty damned decent; ballistics are about the same as a .30-30, and theoretically should be good for medium game out to 150, maybe 175yd with the 180gr'ers without getting into annoying levels of drop-compensation. As far as recoil it's barely any more noticeable than a 77gr 5.56 round. Maybe 50% more, but 50% more of nearly nothing is still small. In a 6lb bolt gun I'd expect it to again be similar to the .30-30. Not sure how the ammo prices are faring these days; I got a few 200rd cases of the 147(?)gr Winchester FMJ for about 43c/rd and got a 200rd case of the 180gr power points for about 65c/rd. If those prices are still holding true (or even within 20-30%) 18mo later (it was well into the 2020 ammo shortage when I bought it) it's still a pretty good deal. I wouldn't use it as a defensive caliber unless it was my only option. Biggest reason being the magazines in the AR platform... They just haven't perfected them yet, they're steel, no anti-tilt followers (though I believe that has to do with it being a straight-wall cartridge, but I'm still used to anti-tilt = better). Maybe that has changed as I've not really bought any since I purchased a few of each mag I could find on the market at the time (which was CMMG, AR Stoner, and some other company that's escaping me) but they were all essentially the same mag. After a lot of tweaking I finally found a buffer weight and spring tension that would cycle it reliably enough for hunting and plinking. Once magpul brings a mag to market I think the 350L is going to take-off like crazy, but the mag situation is the cartridges biggest downside in the AR at the moment. Overall I'm very glad I bought it. It's an easy to shoot round, easy to carry, cheap, and gives me the ability to save my .308, .30-06, .270 etc hunting rounds back for a time where I might not have the luxury of waiting for a close/easy shot. It's a good tool to have.

Glock is a great product if you understand it's place in the market. As you said, it is the Honda Civic of the gun world. Relatively cheap, widely available, pretty much always reliable, and does what it is intended to do. Not the prettiest, not the best performing, but works when you need it.

Another HUGE plus about owning my benelli m4 is being able to own a semi automatic long gun without having some atrocious "California Compliant" AR15 style bs . I live in cali and the unneutered benelli m4 (besides telescoping stock) is the absolute best semi automatic gun I could get imo without being neutered, while still being 100% legal to own.

Definitely a good thing to have. Edit-particularly if you're in an area where you worry about shooting a 22 or are in city limits or something. Good one will kill prarie dogs and similar size stuff. For a shotgun i’f day 870 or 500/590. You can buy a basic version of either model and then buy upgrades as you can. Get a 28” modified barrel model. Leter get a slug barrel, after that a 18.5” for defense. I’d also recommend a good quality AR-15 and Glock 19 specifically. 100% parts and ammo compatibility with every law enforcement agency and government entity is a major thing to have.

How about the Baretta 1301 for the shotgun? Along the lines you talked about with .22s, a common old police revolver with speedloaders and good ammo will do the job. I laugh because most homesteads don't have weapons with suppressors (even though the noise is a great reason for them). Compressed airguns are OK in SOME states.

Eric & Chad, thanks for the Homesteader gun list, including the Texan. Got a question about logistics, what about multi caliber AR-15's? You know, .223, .300 BLK, .277 WLV, .25-45 Sharps and .357 ARMax. All of those calibers use the .223 casing so Mags, BCG's uppers are all the same, only difference is the barrels, reloading dies, projectiles and powders.
