Gentleman, this is excellent advice that you have given on knowing what's beyond your target. As a retired law enforcement officer I have been shot at. But, because I wasn't sure I could safely return fire without injuring someone innocent I didn't shoot. We were trained to make sure that at the end of our tour of duty we returned home safely to our loved ones and that included not being charged with a accidental shooting. Excellent advice again, thank you for sharing this.

I'm now carrying the Underwood Xtreme Defender 120 grain in my .45 and this video verifies my reason why I switched from the Federal Hydra-shocks that I use to use for many years, {20 plus years} I really like the Underwoods, and have found my shooting to be much more consistent and more accurate with them due to the lighter recoil than the former 230 grain were.

One thing that very few people mention about “hollow points” is that they can be very finicky in a semi handgun. You don’t want a round that is not reliable and won’t cycle the next round. Every handgun has its favorite round. You should fire a minimum of 100 rounds of the ammo you plan on using to make sure there are no problems.

A good quality firearm should handle jhp ammo. If it doesn't function reliability; fix it or ditch it. Maintenance is extremely critical for EDC function and reliability.
@ReqDef
@ReqDef 2 жыл бұрын
@@mistermom310 it’s not the firearm or maintenance. Some projectiles on JHP ammo are just too aggressive or angular and hang up on the feed ramps of the barrels. You could either sand the chamfering on the feed ramp, ruining the finish and exposing your barrel on your defensive gun to the elements, or more simply, find a different round. Speer is very popular with law enforcement and some military for this reason, as they’re very rounded at the tip when compared to, say, the Hornady Critical Defense

You ought to but given the cost of JHP ammo, and that is if they are available, one is lucky to have enough to full a magazine. Ammo manufacturers are much more intoned to make their ammo function in a variety of guns. And gun makers have been very sensitive in making guns that will function with a variety of ammo. We don't hear as many complaints about choking on hollow points than back in the 1980s and 1990s.

I’m actually not wrong...lol. There’s several ways to bond a core, and yes lots of bullets are mechanically bonded. I agree that recent advances have made the 9mm a much more potent choice than it was a decade ago and it’s usually the caliber I carry. However, people seem to forget that those same advances have been made to the other calibers as well so they too have improved.
@s0frl15
@s0frl15 Жыл бұрын
An excellent point, but the resurgence of 9mm comes now because it is now considered a guaranteed effective round. Back in the day, the FBI requested the creation of a new caliber because of the failures 9mm to be lethal. Through a convoluted process, they eventually arrived at 40 S&W as a balance between the capacity of 9mm but the effectiveness of 45acp. That's how .40 became all the rage. However, advancements in 9mm have increased its effectiveness to the point of being considered viable. A 9mm will kill now, and that was the point in the change. In the past, you could not have relied on the 9mm to be powerful enough to kill. During the Miami shootout of 1986, which is what sparked the creation of the new caliber, suspect Michael Platt should have been killed by the 9mm he took to the chest, but it didn't penetrate far enough to hit his heart. That would no longer be the case. 9mm would have killed him if the agents had been carrying the Speer Gold Dot G2s that they now carry. So the point in switching back to 9mm isn't that it is now suddenly better than .40 or 45 as far as stopping power goes. It isn't. However, the FBI has since decided that 9mm, now being a lethal round, is good enough to be considered. If all three calibers between 9mm, 40 s&w, and 45 acp will do the job, you want the one with the highest capacity and lowest recoil. If I only get one shot, I want a .45 acp, but I'll take fifteen to twenty 9mm rounds over seven 45 acp rounds or 13 .40 S&W rounds. That's their thought process.
@paul7754
@paul7754 Жыл бұрын
@@s0frl15 Actually, after the 1986 Miami shootout the FBI was asking for a more powerful round - a one shot man stopper without the recoil of the one caliber already in existence that could do that - the 357 magnum. Too many agents couldn't pass the FBI shooting qualification test with the 357 magnum ( try it) so they opted for the hi cap and low recoil of the 9mm. After Miami shootout S&W developed the 10mm for semiauto pistols. The 10mm equaled the 357 magnum in every way, met FBI ballistic standards but had the same issue of strong recoil so FBI rejected it. S&W came back with the .40S&W (cut down 10mm case) which was more powerful than the 9mm, met FBI standards and had manageable recoil. FBI adopted (police departments followed) the 40S&W and was their standard 'issue caliber' until the newer ballistic technology caught up with the 9mm - less recoil and more rounds per magazine. I really like the 'snap' of the 40S&W but I'll stick with my 45ACP 'because shooting more than twice is silly!'

I’d never carry R.I.P. rounds. Like they said, low on penetration, after the petals come off it has a very unimpressive wound track and I’d never want to be in a self defense shooting trial where I would have to defend using a round called R.I.P. You know the other lawyer would harp on that all day long. You might not think it would be a big deal but to a non shooter on the jury I would be afraid that they would think I was just looking for a reason to shoot someone because of that round.

The Winchester White Box ball ammo is a fantastic training round. Great for reloading and priced at 56$ for 200 rds at Wally World, makes it 28 cents for 165 gr 40 S&W rounds. And this load is easy on recoil but good power to match the 165 gr Gold Dots. The 180 gr Winchester bonded brass case H.P. is 20$ a box of 50 in 40 S&W also but is a close second choice for economy SD.

My gel testing differs from yours. I did not do blind barrier testing, we just placed 3 layers of denim in front of the gel. Of the 4 rounds we tested (critical defense, hst, pdx1 and older ranger t series) the critical defense had the least expansion and the expanded shape was still somewhat circular and smooth. The HST had very impressive expansion equal to both of the Winchesters. In addition to great expansion both of the Winchester rounds had sharp petals around the diameter of the expanded bullet. The older Rangers petals seemed more jagged but in almost half the rounds at least one petal separated from the bullet. In the case of the PDX1 all petals were retained. So as impressed as you were with the Critical Defense I was pretty underwhelmed.

spyderxtra777 you'll never convince anyone of putting a few hundred rounds of ammo through a gun at 1 buck a pop. I run 1 box through if I get a new gun or new ammo. I would think this applies more to cheap ass finicky guns. High quality pistols don't care what you feed them. (1911 excluded)

spyderxtra777 most of it is though. I reload my ammo so I'm able to make stuff that's just as hot if not hotter than sd ammo. Have fun paying thousands of dollars just testing what ammo you want to "trust". It's 2018 I think ammunition factories have it down by bow. I've shot since I was 12 years old and I'm now 22 I've shot hundreds of thousands of rounds from factories and I've NEVER had a bullet not go bang. All you have to do is weigh your ammunition to make sure it has the right amount of powder in it. I've done that for 10 years and I've never had a problem, also Don't leave ammunition in your mag or clip for 6-7 months plus and expect it to run perfectly, and for the love of God don't even start by saying that you handload and trust it more than any factory ammunition because then I'll just know your biased.
@spyderxtra777
@spyderxtra777 6 жыл бұрын
Conor the Airman hardly, I said a couple hundred rounds, and even at “a buck a shot” that’s only $200.... and I like to pay less than that for my hollow points if possible. 50 round boxes of HSTs are $30 online, cheap enough where I can buy a few boxes and practice shooting targets with them at different ranges and learn where they hit and where I have to hold to make hits. That’s all I am saying. Most people buy a box of expensive hollow points, run 10 rounds through their gun at a paper target 7 yards away then load up a mag for carry, shoot fmjs the rest of the time and call it good. I don’t feel that’s being adequately prepared but to each his own.

I have shot feral hogs for years with all these handgun rounds and various calibers. Hornady CD doesn't penetrate that well in actual tissue but it hits like a sledgehammer. Federal HST is my favorite locally available ammo just massive wound tracks giant voids of missing tissue. Gold dots just doesn't have as an impressive wound path but it penetrates very deep UNLESS its an underwood 10mm 180gr then it's a frickin hand grenade. Winchester pdx always made a lot of bloodshot meat with wicked looking bullets that expanded massively; bigger than the rest. Never used any lehigh projectiles mostly because they're so hard to find. My preference that basically encompasses all of these traits? Corbon/barnes copper solid JHPs. I literally cannot find a fault in any copper round.

The damage they did to everything was ridiculous. I've been charged by many a hog while carrying handguns and will tell you that a .380 g42 with 99gr HST will drop them just as well as a .45 BUT no handgun compares to a magnum pistol. 10mm has literally changed the game for me with so many 1 shot stops DRT sig 180gr jhp that i felt no need to go any further but i rock 180gr underwood gold dots for true .41mag power.

Same here. I know it's expensive but in all reality, $20 and $30 boxes of ammo are only gonna tax you if you're burning these rounds down range. I was taught to use the ball ammo for practice and then invest in more mags. Then you can simply switch mags. Your defense ammo never gets spent, unless of course you're in a fight. Federal HST is what I'm carrying now. The Critical Duty and Critical Defense are just as effective. At night I've been experimenting with that tracer ammo Jessie James came out with. That is some fun times...lol...you can walk your rounds to the target. It makes you feel like your strafing an enemy strong hold...lol...They are spendy though. But then what isn't expensive? Everything's going up on price.

@@xPureRage actually not all ammo feeds the same so you do need to test it. That's like not testing the strength of a blade till you need it to actually cut or chop branches after a hurricane hits and you can't get your family out of a door the branch pinned shut. You always make sure your tools work for their intentions.

I choose Grizzly Cartridge JHPs in 147 grain .357 SIG for home defense/EDC and 90 grain 9mm for pocket carry. Underwood Xtreme Defender would be an excellent option for carrying while in a vehicle or for use in a .380ACP. Double Tap also makes an excellent .45ACP JHP. Check out Paul Harrell's videos if you want good information on a particular round.

I do a lot of ammo testing and test them in simulated real life scenarios. I stage scenarios with auto glass and doors and/or body panels that were purchased at the junkyard and in some cases, borrowed from the junkyard for the use of ammo testing. I also have a lot of farms and ranches around me. Sometimes an animal has to be put down or dies before being harvested and the animal cannot be sold for food. They are my test mediums. The best round that I have tested and had it perform virtually flawlessly no matter what caliber was being used, what firearm and barrel length was being used and no matter if a barrier had to be penetrated or not, was the Lehigh Defense/Underwood Xtreme Defender round. Literally, on almost every test, the round performed perfectly and had the largest pwc, primary wound channel. The next best performing rounds were a tie and performed virtually identical in almost every test medium, caliber, and type of firearm used with different barrel links. Those two rounds were the Federal Premium HST rounds and Speer Gold Dot rounds. I use to carry these in my firearms until I tested the Lehigh Defense/Underwood Xtreme Defender rounds and test after test, the results all stayed the same. The department that I work for uses the Federal Premium HST rounds and if I had to only carry a hollow point round, either of these two would be my choice. The next type of round that I have tested, also still own and would recommend use of is the Hornady Critical Duty rounds. These rounds also perform great and really shine when a barrier needs to be penetrated first. But if there is no barrier as a factor, then these rounds also, still perform very well. Where they differ from the Federal Premium HST rounds and Speer Gold Dot rounds, is in round expansion. These have a tendency to only expand to around 75% to 80% of what a normal hollow point will do. But, they will perform slightly better than the other two rounds if a barrier must be penetrated first. The other ammo that I have tested and like is the Cor Bon and Cor Bon DPX ammo. I really like the ammo that Cor Bon makes too. Remington Golden Saber’s are also pretty good. Same with Winchester PDX1 Defender. In fact, in my testing, the Remington Golden Saber rounds and the Winchester PDX1 Defender rounds tested and performed very similar. If someone has a barrel that is less than 4”, and barrier penetration is not a factor, then I would recommend the Hornady Critical Duty rounds too, but only in those scenarios. One ammo that I have heard about but have never tested is Nosler Defense. I have heard a few people say that I should try and get some of that ammo and test it too. Last, with the G2 R.I.P. rounds. Please don’t ever buy that ammo! I’m really surprised this channel even mentioned the round and claimed that it is good in a few scenarios. That ammo is nothing more than a dog crap gimmick round and performs the exact opposite, in almost every way, in how you want a self defense round to perform. Please do not ever buy that piece of dog crap round and use it in your handgun. If you want to ignore everything I wrote in here that is fine. That is your choice. But if you do decide to do that, please do not ignore this last piece of advice in regards to the R.I.P. rounds. The reliability and effectiveness on those rounds is diminished many times over, when you compare them to any other self defense or even range ammo.

When I sat on a grand jury we heard a case involving over penetration. Good guy was cleared in a justifiable shooting of the bad guy. The bullet went through bad guy striking a woman that was in no way involved. Good guy was charged with some serious assault charges for striking the woman. All I got when I asked the cop what kind of gun, he responded with “357”. Cop was immediately cut off by prosecutor then I got the “this is not CSI this is a grand jury lecture. Against my and one other no vote the indictment went forward and good guy was charged. Wish I knew more of the details and how it ended. That night I removed the 357’s from my snubby CCW revolver and replaced them with standard lead 38 semi wadcutters. I’m going to look into the ammo shown at the end of the video.

Joseph Roach I totally agree BUT not being privy to the details. Seeing that the good guy was cleared of shooting the bad guy. I can only assume his life was in danger and he reacted immediately defending himself. Did he even have the time to look beyond his target, if he had taken an additional few seconds to look beyond the bad guy could it have cost him his life.

Surprised that Remington golden saber wasn’t mentioned. I looked at this test of over 100 rounds in FBI testing and it was the best overall. No clogs, best penetration without over penetrating, no core separation, and doubled its diameter after expansion.

Hornady Critical Defense is my go to all day every day. I've carried the same rounds in the same mag for over a year and a half, and even after repeatedly chambering and swapping the top two rounds, getting wet in rain and sweat they still performed perfectly. Expansion begins at a shallow depth so you know it's stopping in the target even if it's a thin person.
