Ireland, Spain, and Norway to recognize Palestinian state

In a move that is likely to bolster the Palestinian cause and strain relations with Israel, Spain, Norway, and Ireland say they will begin to recognize the state of Palestine on May 28th. The move comes after several European Union countries indicated in recent weeks that they also plan to make the recognition, arguing a two-state solution is essential for lasting peace in the region. While some 140 countries have already recognized a Palestinian state - more than two-thirds of United Nations members - none of the major western powers have done so. We spoke with international human rights lawyer and senior fellow at the University of Ottawa, Alex Neve.

The Palestinians have been offered a two state solution at least 5-6 times in my lifetime and they've turned down every one. Including one in which instead of a 50-50 land split, Israel offered an 80-20 split giving Palestinians the bigger part in trade for peace..Turned down. And Cory Booker was in Israel working on a two state solution with israel and the Saudis when Hamas attacked to stop the deal!

Yea, if someone took over your house when you were at work, kicked out your family too, and only agreed to give it back when you come home if: A) You can only have half the rooms B) You aren’t allowed any knives in your kitchen or tools in your garage C) The people who took it can come and go any time D) Your family can’t return with you. You wouldn’t accept it either. A proposal of a two state solution can’t be at the huge expense of one party. So stop making it seem like it was as simple as; “hey, let’s split it in half and live equally and separately of each other.”

Well maybe this will serve to get the palestinians to recognise their own statehood. So far they have rejected it. They would then be expected to live in peace with Israel….a novel idea.

A Palestine fronted by Hamas is a broken terrorist state. I agree that a two state solution is a good idea, even good ideas have drawbacks that need to be ironed out. The Palestinians have been offered a two state solution many times in the last hundred years, in each case they have opposed this solution.

Maybe the US should recognize breakaway ethnicities or regions of Ireland(Irish Travelers), Spain(Basque, Galician, Catalan and Castilian regions) and Norway(Kvens, Romani, Tatars), as sovereign states, and recognize them. Let's make our own unilateral decision and recognize these breakaway states....

You realise that means for almost the last 100 years they HAVE occupied that land. Whoever believes they have a claim to that land is between them. However, Israel is basically giving them an ultimatum: be slaughtered or accept our terms. That seems right to you? Hamas took hostages to gain a ceasefire... in your mind, what is closer to the definition of a terrorist. A group that takes hostages to stop the fighting or a group that will slaughter thousands to get what they want? Do you believe israel is justified in breaking the Geneva Convention?... FYI thats rhetorical. You can't justify breaking it, because it was put in place to STOP atrocities.
