This is heartbreaking. She was one of my faves growing up. I don't know how many times I sang along to, "Out Here On My Own" on my 45. That song was on repeat as a kid. I loved Fame, first the movie, then the TV series. If you haven't seen the movie DC Cab, you should look it up. It was hilarious. A lot of great actors was in it including Ms. Irene Cara. She was a very gifted and talented woman and was wrongfully taken advantage of in the industry. Rest in Peace Ms. Cara! Your work will forever live on. 🙏🥺❤️

Irene’s death hit me harder than I thought it would. Hearing this song, which I’ve loved since I was a kid, reminds me of what’s missing in todays music & that’s real raw talent. People who can really sing without gimmicks and tools. This is easily one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard and as sad as i am that Irene has passed, I’m glad that work like this will last for generations to come. Rest In Heavenly Peace & thank you for the work that you’ve done Irene. 🙏🏽❤️

Agreed. Raw talent has been replaced by branding, image, & overproduction. Conformity is celebrated & promoted, with rare exceptions (Billie Eilish, Jack White, & Lizzo, for example). The industry became more powerful than the artistry somewhere along the line. Musicians and singers aren't required to know their instruments or trust their voices. The control room is now the "corrections room" to create the most profitable sound. Profit comes easier by investing in the formulaic manipulation of a willing stooge than it does by investing in an artist with raw talent, inexhaustible work ethic, and commitment to the creative process.

Haven't heard this song in years. Bring tears to eyes just listening to this beautiful song sung by a pure talented singer Irene Cara.. Sung from the heart and soul.--Updated 11/26/2022 RIP. RIH. Irene Cara. The movies that you ⭐ in "Sparkle ' and "Fame' will always remained my all time favorites. My condolences to your family and friends. Sometimes I wonder where I've been, Who I am, Do I fit in. Make believein' is hard alone, Out here on my own. We're always provin' who we are, Always reachin' For that risin' star To guide me far And shine me home, Out here on my own. When I'm down and feelin' blue, I close my eyes so I can be with you. Oh, baby be strong for me; Baby belong to me. Help me through. Help me need you. Until the morning sun appears Making light Of all my fears, I dry the tears I've never shown, Out here on my own. But when I'm down and feelin' blue, I close my eyes so I can be with you. Oh, baby be strong for me; Baby, belong to me. Help me through. Help me need you. Sometimes I wonder where I've been, Who I am, Do I fit in. I may not win, But I can't be thrown, Out here on my own, Out here on my own. Same with me. I grew up listening to this. We sang selections from FAME when I was in the 4th grade in the early 80's. I learned how to play fame because of my Music teacher in grade school Mr Kephler. RIP to Irine Cara. Your Voice will always be a part of my music history. Such soul , such passion, . This song brings me to tears no matter what. So much passion is lost today(exceptions true) but some just shine so brightly like Irine. I love you dearly. God Bless you Irine and all involved with the production of FAME. I almost went to the NY school of the arts (They closed the school before I was able to apply but Years later I graduated from Manhattan School of Music) Everything is full circle. God Bless you all.

I still get emotional when I hear this song, just as I did when I 1st heard this song when it came out. I was only 7 or 8 years old, at the time. 40 years later, it brings back so many memories & has new meaning for me nowadays. I would love go sing this for graduation, maybe if I ever get the chance to finish culinary school, maybe at my graduation....it's only a dream of mine for now. 💖💖💖

As a 20 yr old, I saw this in Australia in 1980 with a young Sydneysider I'd just met. We spent 3 fabulous weeks together before I had to return to the UK. If, by fluke, you're reading this Leanne Holland, I've never forgotten you.

Exactly! Mariah Carey got me here. I grew up watching Fame and it is only now that I am aware of this song because of Mariah. This is the power of celebrity and social media. I’ve only associated Irene Cara with “What a feeling” but this tune is also a fantastic one too!

Ms Cara's passing hit me hard. A giant of a talent in every sense of the spectrum, not to mention, she feels like somebody I grew up with, or somebody you'd be friendly with at school or on the block. Rest peacefully.

This is one of those songs that no matter how old, no matter how many times you have heard it, no matter where you are. It just makes you feel something wonderful & some what emotional because it has that magic that a beautiful song is suppose to do and make you feel. It puts you through so many feelings just enjoy the time and take it all in because it's only going to last maybe 3 minutes but it is a wonderful 3 minutes experience that only a great classic song can make you feel. Where would we be without music!
