I spoke to an older homeless woman in Santa Cruz at CVS. She introduced her dog and she pulled a wagon with her items piled. She was 72yrs old. She told me she stopped staying at the camp near the river. Way to dangerous. She had found a great spot in the forest nearby that had a beautiful stream. She had a tent, cot, cookware and all that. I was touched by her life story- hard life and loss. I felt blessed that I met her and will remember her. They are people, from all walks of life that need love and respect. My brother passed away at his camp in 2002. He loved his life..I miss him.

It's fun watching this... I stepped onto city streets for the first time just over 4 years ago... for me, the biggest problem was keeping positive. Other homeless people seem to almost enjoy misery... We almost always get in trouble or something stupid when we hang out... I got "smart" and found woods to live alone in 3 years ago... I've always been weird, but out of all my apartments... I love it out here. Sometimes scumbags come all the way out here and maybe steal something or a try to smoke junk with me but I keep em away and keep my own well enough. I don't steal, beg or work.

I had spent some time on the streets as a kid and a lot of what was mentioned in your video is hitting the head on the nail. But there are a few things I learned from my wayfaring days. 1. Don't be quick to trust. When trying to open up and finding a new group of homebums, people want reassurance as to who you are, are you safe-dangerous-unstable-smart-a threat to their social status. Only give as much information that you feel comfortable giving and read reactions and responses. There are predators and leaders, followers and those who only lookout for themselves. 2. Study your area. Urban/Natural structures. Traffic. Shopping malls and security. Some groups are territorial as to who can panhandle what corner. Once you have an idea as to what your area feels like, then you can know where to be and when. 3. Share with awareness. Food-Supplies-Entertainment-MONEY Most groups want you to contribute to their little family in one form or another. But when money gets involved people become a bit primal in their psychology. Cash is king but don't keep it on you or too close to you. Hot tip....closed fast food drive thru's have change that falls between drivers and the window, you just have to time it right. 4. Listen. A lot of my friends who came and went always had a story. I found that listening was enough to build friendships. Some people were broken records, especially those who have been strung out for a bit. But active listening helped to gain someones trust. You can't solve someones life problem, but you can at least listen 5. If it's too good to be true...it probably is. this kind of falls in with my first one. Tall tales and persuasive people usually have ulterior motives. Manipulators will tell you things that you want to hear, in order for them to get what they want. The more you are pressured into doing something, the more dangerous things can get....That was a hard lesson to learn. 6. Don't give up. Perspective is everything when you are in dire straights. Life will knock you down, people will knock you down, you can be shunned and made to feel less than human, like a stray dog. But realize that this transitionary period is only temporary, if you want it to be. You have more control over your future than you think.

ive been homeless several times in several states, its not for everyone,thats for sure. There were times that were really hard, and other times that were magical...free, and beautiful...its an adventure to say the least. The hardest part for me was the nights. Finding a good spot is everything!! Its not always easy or obvious. I like to be hidden when i sleep...noone needs to know where i crash at night. Preferably a covered spot when it rains... because it will...lol. Who to trust is crucial, use you gut instincts. I always rolled solo, i feel safer and didn't meet many i trusted out there. Some were cool, but I stuck to myself... Unfortunately, there are alot of idiots out there that will cause problems, its best to stay away from them, the loud ones, the trouble makers....its not hard to see... best to avoid. Travel light, stay clean....gym memberships are good. I always only used a single backpack...if i cant fit it in there, i dont need it. Learn where to go for food, hygiene and other necessities. Churches are great resources and have saved me many times. I never had a permanent camp. I dont like something that can be found. One time i found a great spot close to a restaurant, it was risky because technically it could have been seen as trespassing...so i only went into my spot after 10pm, and got out of there by 5:45am. Eventually it was found by someone else but i was moving on by then. Never leave trash or signs you were there!! Stealth is important! It's not an easy lifestyle and danger is always a possibility, but if you use common sense and stay in areas that are safe, you should be alright. Cheers!!

Put Minute Rice or ramen noodles in a container, cover with cold, or warm or hot water, put the lid on, let sit for 1/2 hour or so, nice and fluffy. Doesn't need to be heated. Trudging miles thru knee deep snow, I used to put on my socks, then plastic bags, then my boots, my feet didn't freeze, but when my feet started to sweat, I had to change my socks or my feet would start to freeze. I also put disposable plastic gloves over my gloves then mittens over them, kept my fingers very warm. I used separate neck warmers or thick head or ski bands to cover my ears under my hat and to cover my nose so they wouldn't get so cold for fear of frostbite.

Love this. I worked with the homeless in Portland Oregon for 3 years (6 days a week). I learned so much about survival in the city from a few that were put there because of circumstances. If people could actually sit and talk to some of them you could learn so much. Also Hobos that actually ride the trains were an amazing wealth of information. If you do start learning, learn there symbols that they leave. That way if you come across those symbols you know. I know a circle with three x's in the middle means good people, good food, and a welcoming environment.

Since you have experience with homeless people (I was only homeless for a short time) I have a question. I know people with an addiction need to stay in the city, but why do non-addicted people stay in the city? I know panhandling can raise quite a bit of money. In a week you could afford a spool of fishing line, a knife, a small tent, a sleeping bag, and then hitchhike to a forest and live for free without being hassled by mean people. I just never understood why they stay where people can be mean to them. Obviously the addicted people can't do this because stopping drugs or alcohol is very difficult. Maybe it is a stupid question but I have stayed in the woods for months at a time. It can be quite pleasant.

@@woodknotts6050 Sad but true. I think that if I had money, I would teach those that wanted to learn, how to read a map and live off the land. Maybe even buy some forest land and take them out there. Maybe hire a social worker for those that wanted to understand themselves better. I guess it doesn't do me much good to dream about helping people. I just give donations to help. The thing is that I think what I'm doing is helping myself not feel guilty because I know in my heart that I could do more. I'm a veteran and I know I could help other vets. It is just so hard to leave my house. Sometimes I don't even go outside of the house for 2 months or more. I just wish I were stronger. It sounds silly but there is a movie called The Never Ending Story. There is a character called a rock biter. He tried to hold on to some friends but he couldn't. They were pulled away and were lost. He tells the story and looks down at his hands and says "they seem like such big, strong hands." I used to be a Marine. "They used to be such strong hands." Now they are weak and I and I'm to scared to leave the house. (Scared is the wrong word but it will do.) Thank you for your reply.

This was pretty good but, maybe a few things I'd like to put another twist on. Starting with 'grey man'...don't carry 'combat or bushcraft' tools, you won't blend in. IF you want to carry that knife, keep it out of sight. Other things like chargers, phones, watches can rebrand you as 'target'...you need to appear as owning nothing worth stealing. Also, if you're female, sleeping in crowds isn't your best bet. My prefered spot was in a dark, heavily bushy church yard. As for food...ask around. There's ganna be someone who knows where all the soup kitchens are & when they feed. That person will also know where free beds, showers, & other services are available. IF you must be on the streets in a city, search out ALL the FREE services available. You won't find gas stations or stores willing to let you bathe or shave or wash your hair in their "For customers ONLY" restrooms & bus stations will usually give you the boot too if you don't have a ticket. Use your observation skills to find the successful homeless & AVOID the crazy druggies & alcoholics! Better yet...get the heck out of Dodge & go RURAL!

A long walking stick and learn how to defend yourself with it. A boo boo bag with bandaids and stuff so you aren't pulling out your firstaid kit. Change your socks. Cornmeal and quick oats are a lot of calories but are light and don't take up muck room. 55 gallon drum liners can be used for so many things from shelter to a mattress, a raincoat to a bath.

NO ONE THERE. washed them in the stream after i cut off the legs and the back pockets (patches). took a few hours with the big sewing needle and cotton string not thread this shit was tough! use dubbin or waterproofing spray on your pack and any repairs to it as repair thread will rot and fast. also not all packs are as waterproof as you'd think or like to be. it always amazed me seeing people trying to haul bags that were falling apart yet no one ever had a dollar general sewing kit with them. it's too small and too light to not have. same thing with small bars of soap from dollar stores or sprawlmart in the "samples" section.

Another thing to pack is an oversized poncho. I've got one that packs into a pouch that takes up very little space in a pack. If you put the poncho on and sit on a stool or even a small chair (poncho covers the chair), the poncho will reach the ground and you have yourself an enclosed space, basically like a mini shelter. If you use the Palmer furnace technique, you can even make it a heated shelter. Choose a black colored poncho for stealth.
@johnstack5008
@johnstack5008 Жыл бұрын
The Palmer furnace is putting one or more candles on the floor under the poncho to heat up the space. Your head is outside of the poncho so you will not be breathing in the fumes. Of course, you can't sleep with the candles burning. For sleeping you can use hot rocks (heated in a fire) for heat. If you have a camp stove, you could heat up a big pot of water and put the pot under the poncho. It's good if the pot has a tight-fitting lid.

Love this, bro!!! This video is awesome, especially for people who help the homeless, like me. I give the homeless a care package of wipes, deodorant, under wear, socks, baby powder, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc. I also give them blankets, hats, gloves, clothes, coats, shoes, etc. when I have them. Backpacks and bungie cords are huge, too. They can attach things from the backpack and still travel lightly. Cigarettes are a gold mine and give them bargaining chips and make friends because half of the homeless help each other. Giving them a 48 pack of water to sell when it’s hot helps, too. I even give them extra socks to sell. At least they are working for their money. I bought one guy a bike and he did Uber Eats for a year and got an apartment. BUT, they have to be and STAY sober and they WILL beat their temporary homelessness. Next, how to survival living in a hotel for 2 years - WORKING and partially homeless. Or, working while living in a car. This IS America and it is going to get worse. I am doing the best I can and videos like this shed light on the situation. NONE of the people I work with are on drugs or drink. They DO smoke Cigs, and yo would, too. Prayers!!!!!

I make a habit to engage homeless people who have those homemade trailers attached to a bike when I can. Other than seeing how surprised they are that someone actually will talk to them, they are not stupid and usually have good information to share. Now that doesn't mean all of them are safe to approach.

I've never been homeless but I've spent a few bitterly cold winter nights traveling on foot and sleeping in front of venues queuing for concerts with no more than a sleeping bag if that, and these are the things I've tried that worked pretty well to keep my hyper cold-sensitive anemic self passably warm - the dense squishy foam panels used for packing, if you can find some, are very warm, give off heat almost and weigh nothing. Great to sit or sleep on even if half an inch thick it does wonders. - thick paper yard waste bags are great for hiding your legs from the wind. Get a five pack for a few bucks share with a few friends - If you can find a few of those back pain heat patches for cheap, stick a few on yourself during the really bitter cold and they give off heat for many hours. I don't know about the chemical in those and how safe it would be to use these regularly (did it a few times only) but they warm you up fantastically. - if you ask many coffee places will give you free hot water you can drink to keep warm (creates need for bathroom problem though) or make instant noodles with. - stuff paper towels in your shoes to insulate your toes (if you have space in there) - pajama pants make a great warm layer under looser pants without being too uncomfortable - keep a mental note of where there are construction sites nearby so you can sneak into their portapotties. Not for large sites with surveillance cameras obviously

A tip I learned from mailman was to put deodorant on my feet. He said he does that during the Winter time because it keeps his feet from getting too cold due to sweating in his boots all day. I'm not homeless but I know that that tip works I have used it for many years while I was working outside. And I do follow 2 youtubers that used to be homeless and did videos while they were homeless actually living out on the street.

Carrying a machete deters personal attacks. A tightly rolled newspaper secured with duct tape and kept up your sleeve makes a good whacking stick. Researching social services and their hours are well known amongst the homeless.

Roll a stack of double sheets of newspaper diagonally then fold in half at the thick part. If you roll tight enough it’s harder than you think. A tightly rolled magazine can also make a good jabbing defense device. Not as effective as the newspaper club but can be made up fairly quickly.

Carry light is good advice - never been homeless but I’ve lived out of a pack for weeks at a time as a western bowhunter and an active duty division reconnaissance asset for over a decade. Carrying too much too fast too far will get you no where in a hurry. Taking proper care of yourself in the “wild” takes hard work and a lot of practice. Even just living in a tent in the backyard will teach you a lot of things - what works for you, what doesn’t work for you, what you can live without, what skills you wish you had, what gear you wish you didn’t etc. Walk your dog around the neighborhood every day/night with your pack on, make camp on a daily basis in the backyard for a week etc. All of it is going to prepare you for that proverbial zombie apocalypse a metric sh!t ton better than watching another 316 KZbin gear reviews. Do the things.

@@bevlower6793 I get what you’re saying, not everyone has Uncle Sugar and corporate sponsors to get the lightweight stuff. One tip I have for anyone still reading the comments - the proverbial “through hikers” community has more miles on the trail than just about anyone else. Learn from them, they have very economical solutions that have been tested thoroughly over the course of hundreds of thousands of miles on foot with nothing but their pack. A large portion of them are younger people, students etc, and are forced to do more with less. Similar to homeless people in that regard, worth checking out.

13. If you have a regular income, then buy a gym membership. Great place to shower/get clean 14. Know where the 24 hour laundromats are. I like to do laundry late at night...and sometimes I use just the dryer to keep clothes dry & outer layers warm in cold weather 15. Keep your ID's up to date. It will help you in the long run should you begin looking for work again & keep banking opportunities open 16. Get a PO box for mail if you can 17. Don't overdo it w/walking if you're going to be homeless on foot. Super important to take care of your feet & have lots of socks handy 18. If you have enough money, then buy a monthly bus pass in the city you'll be homeless in. Also get a bicycle if you can. It will make mobility a A LOT easier

As you layer your clothing; Avoid Tight Spots. many years ago I rode a motorcycle, in the winter it could get really cold at 30 - 50 mph. So a base layer, a LOOSE Mid layer, and a Loose around the knees, elbows, and seat areas especially were absolutely necessary to protect from frostbite. I, and other motorcyclists, would stop and get a newspaper and layer it under our base layer at the windward points on really cold rides. the wind would crush the loft of the mid layers and ruin the insulation but the papers would at least keep the frostbite off us.

There are obviously differing levels of homelessness as there are different people who are homeless.I have yet to see a KZbin clip made by a woman. I sleep alone never near someone else. forth thing looking tactical means your going to get robbed. fifth thing is know your body needs for nutrition. eat as you need not as you want. sixth thing learn to blind in. look like everyone. don't stand out

Layer up your hands, feet and head. Carry thing socks and thick, thin gloves and thick, thin hat and thick. This 3 in 1 layers gives you a light layer, a medium layer, and both together gives you a heavy layer. Newspaper are becoming a think of the past, but keep an eye out at all times for sheets of plastic, cardboard boxes, tyvek, etc. Urban homeless have more access to tap water than they do to burnable material that will attract attention. If it is free take it. You might not need it now but you can use it later. If you must pan handle, write the items you need as you will look less likely to spend any money they give you on booze or drugs.

best thing i learned when homeless was in the woods, in the city in the back of a vehicle or an abandoned bldg get tin cans say two or three where one slides into the other. small, med, large. ok. find a nail or spike somewhere or a husky bush knife and poke holes all around the tops and the bottoms of the tins on the side. mount a candle securely (?!) and then one after the other place the empty cans on top of the flame. almost like that clay planter trick with a tealight. was surprised to find it worked really well.

I would argue your food recommendations. Collect money/ change and buy hot dogs, chicken, eggs, sardines. If one gets enough animal saturated fats they will be able to prevent infections, and repair the body. I know this is not the medical nutritional mantra we have been fed, but it’s correct. Now if you can’t get fresh meat, remember eggs are incredibly nutritious and don’t need to be refrigerated. I get why you mentioned chips and carbs. But carbs are not essential. Saturated animal fats and protein ( essential amino acids) are essential.

NYC rent just too high. Stay away from places that requires thousands to get indoors. Make your money there while homeless get away from there in your hybrid vehicle you can live out of it easier. Jake McCollum is living this way he got helped with the loan but it not impossible build enough wealth to get in an affordable vehicle. They do have storage units all over so you can look normal getting shower and living for ~$200 a month. NYC has subway system that you pay by the month you can bring your bike for a small fee. Carry a hammock you can find places to hang that would be impossible to sleep in any other way. The best look is ready to work. Construction clothes are durable and can allow you to carry things like hammer, box cutter , hard hat. The worst thing you can do when you're homeless is to let people know you are homeless. When you reach that level it's the law of the jungle not the law of the land you lose rights it shouldn't be that way but that's the way it is you lose credibility you lose rights. So your best bet is to have a storage unit where you can lock your things up and nobody knows just keep it to yourself grab you some showers at the gym when you get in the gym don't tell people you're homeless just grab your shower and act like it's a regular old day you're there to exercise after work. Use the fact that you're homeless to your advantage get your storage unit closer to where you work or have your storage unit closer to the services that you require like your gym. Every time I've been homeless it was because a woman wears power tripping and they took everything I owned and put me out. I'm in my 50s now I don't have anything to do with women. They're just not stable enough and they want to use the system to manipulate you. Especially if you're a good guy and you're a live and let live type person they see that as weakness and it's not. But needless to say I've been without one for over 4 years now and I don't see myself going back.

Seems like it would be safer to sleep during the day. I've also seen some homeless people sleep on a pallet, with some added padding. It looks like that would maybe protect you from the cold of the ground, especially with the added layers of cardboard. I once knew a man who had created an underground home that was really cool, and he told almost no one about his place or where it was, it looked like it took a lot of work, probably months to slowly and covertly dig out his underground home that was about 10 by 10 and six or seven feet deep.

Keep your arm through the strap of your pack while sleeping. Somebody will snatch it right out from under your head. If someone offers you something, and you don't need it, take it & trade it. ALWAYS have situational awareness, hobos can be sweet all day, & rob you with the flip of a switch, after they've sized you up. Never leave your pack w/ someone for them to 'watch it' for you real quick. Stay away from anyone that just got out of prison, desperate people do desperate things, and they likely don't have resources, except for what they can 'get', including from you. Don't show anything expensive that you might have. You can EASILY eat food from trash, fastfood places have to toss their food every 20mins.

When packing all you need is a sleeping bag and cooking tools, past that everything else will be available when on the go. Fights only break out if you violate property or reputation. Hobos don’t use sun screen or clean most wounds, your body is good at fighting bacteria if you expose yourself. When getting clothes be prepared to wear them for days on end and not showering, polyester is best. The only reason a hobo is dirty to get money. The worse I looked the more money I made.
