Very simple: if there's no space between the runners in front, you overtake on the outside lane. Anyone who tries to squeeze through is a hindrance and should be DQd accordingly. Every little bump has a huge impact on the last straight since the athletes are on their last legs and the rebalancing takes a huge extra effort. Just look how quickly Reekie faded after getting pushed by Mageean at the last 60m.
