I never liked baseball but the best thing about it is how good you are is completely up to you. You don't need another player to make you look good. You can either hit, catch and throw or you can't. With other sports like football you need someone else to let you be your best, a quarterback is only as good as his receivers.

That was great, Diane. Happy to see you enjoyed your introduction to the sport. Do go to a game sometime when you're here during baseball season perhaps at Fenway (Boston) or Wrigley (Chicago). That was a fun video. The Babe Ruth style bat came from the 1920s, where the thinking was that heavier bats equaled more power, thus more home runs. Later the theory came into vogue that lighter bats resulted in faster swings to give more power. The pros use wooden bats. The ball comes off much faster on metal bats, so the pro players use the older style wooden bats as a built-in handicap. At the pro level, using metal bats would result in more hits and skew the game away from pitching and defense. Oh, and Rounders is generally recognized as the precursor to baseball.

Ah, you're in the city I grew up in. Lynn, Lynn the city of sin You never come out, the way you came in You ask for water, but they give you gin The girls say no, yet they always give in. I lived in Southern California and Las Vegas and was always surprised by how many people would recite that little ditty to me when I told them where I was from, I had always thought it was just a local thing! I'm surprised to see you there, its not really much of a tourist spot. There are some interesting places though, High Rock Tower and the Stone Tower in Lynn Woods are cool. There's also Dungeon Rock, where many believe a buried pirate treasure is deep in the bottom of the cave and a man died in a 1638 earthquake trying to dig to it. Much of what he dug out also collapsed and now there's a deep hole at the end of the tunnel filled with water at the bottom. It is known that way back then pirate ships occassionally sailed up the nearby Saugus River to avoid British naval ships. The old burial ground on Wetern Ave. has graves dating back to the 1600's. Lots of bars and pubs in the city, talk to the locals, some aren't the safest places to be. Lots of great eating places, and don't forget to try a roast beef sandwich, they're among the best in the country, and Brothers Deli on Market Street is a great place for breakfast or lunch. Enjoyed the reaction very much!

Way back in the 90's I worked in defense. One day we had a company softball game instead of a work day. It was the first time I ever wore cleats. I came to bat, assumed the opposite of the stance illustrated here (legs together, not apart) and when the slo-pitch pitcher lobbed his first pitch, I stepped into the swing, made contact, and the giggling behind me became one drawn out Woooooah! The ball went so far it ended up on the other diamond. I also caught a right field fly ball while I was running away from it with my back turned. The moral is: always play with cleats!

When Ruth went to England, he tried out Cricket and reportedly hit some of the longest balls that his instructor had seen. His instructor who was a noted Cricket pro wanted to train Babe up as a Cricket batsman and thought he could in a short term be one of the best. Babe asked him how much a top Cricket player made and was told about the equivalency of $250 a month. Since Babe at the time was making $80,000 with the Yankees, he said that he was going to stay with baseball.

I never knew the difference on the wood vs aluminum bats. I learned to play using a wooden bat. I only used aluminum at school or on a softball team, they wouldn’t let me use my wood bat. I actually prefer the wood bay…. Sadly, I broke it when I was teaching my niece to play. It started as my brothers bat when we were kids. When he moved out he left it behind when he moved out… could be because it was in my closet. 😉 so it lasted us around 25 years. I was sad when it broke. But I didn’t throw it away… so it’s been about 40 years. I’m going to give it to my niece because it’s one of her, as she calls them, core memories.

He said baseball goes back to the early 1900s, but it actually goes back to the mid 1800s. It was significantly different at first, and originally called Base Ball (two words), but mostly recognizable to a modern baseball fan. The rules to baseball had settled close to what we have today when the first professional team was formed in 1869. The first major league was formed in 1871. It was replaced by the National League in 1876, which is half of what we now know as Major League Baseball (MLB). The other half, the American League, was formed out of a minor league and it claimed major league status in 1901. The two leagues cooperated throughout the 20th century, but did not formally merge until the year 2000. There are quite a few professional and amateur teams and leagues across the country and around the world, but MLB is generally considered the highest level, certainly in the United States at least. And Canada, there is currently one Canadian team in MLB.

Baseball surged in popularity in the latter 1800's when the US switched down from a 6-day work week, to a 5 day, plus a half-day Saturday. The city Fathers didn't think it would be morally good to have everyone loafing about on the Saturday getting into trouble, so they encouraged men to go to the parks and play baseball.

Sometimes I forget or didn't fully realize or think about it, that a lot of people in Europe probably don't even think about the basics of baseball. A lot of terms and expressions (like the bases she mentioned) are baseball related. I'm not even into it myself, I guess I just kind of took it for granted that most people knew the game and its rules, we did it at school along with other things like soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis (maybe others). I think American football was more optional and only if you were on a team, but in gym we did a variety of sports.
