Irish government concedes defeat in referendums

Ireland’s government has conceded defeat in the nation's referendums on modernising its constitution.
The campaign sparked debate over the meaning of family and the role of women in the home.
One referendum was to try and expand the definition of family as being founded on marriage to “durable relationships” - a vague term that many lawyers criticised.
The ‘Women in the Home’ referendum - which grabbed a lot of international headlines - was to replace old-fashioned language around a mother’s duties within the home with a clause recognising care provided by family members to one another.
“I think it’s clear at this stage, that the family amendment and the care amendment referendums have been defeated,” Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said.

The government wanted to change the wording of the Irish constitution in relation to (in broad terms) the definition of a family, and the role and responsibility of the State and family members in providing care. By voting yes, we would have removed any mention of women from the Irish constitution, we would have changed the definition of a family from being based on a marriage to being based on an undefined "durable relationship", and (arguably) we would have lessened the State's responsibility to support families in delivering care.

Lots of inaccuracies in the report. The Irish government wasted 30 million euros on this pc referendum- so it wasn’t that they didn’t “commit resources” to the vote. Also voter turnout was actually quite a respectable 45% (voting isn’t mandatory in Ireland). The original reference to “women’s duties in the home” was at the request of a feminist in the 1930s who felt that working class women shouldn’t have to work outside the home to make ends meet. Finally - most Irish people are tired of the inept government focusing on this referendum and not on the housing crisis, crime, healthcare system and other far more pressing problems

As an Irish person we are sick of being second class citizens in our own country. Our government slowly removing our rights and freedoms is the last straw. We suffered for 800 years under a tyrannical regime we are not going to allow our own to plunge us into delusion and despair.

Interestingly during a live debate from Cumbria on GB News last week the veey first audience member who spoke mentioned the WEF to the presenter and her 'panel' of 'experts' and they couldn't shut him up and move on quick enough.
