+Steve Burton History is so biased it's pointless to talk about it and give everyone a fair section. Like you realize if history classes were actually 100% not biased and just taught every countries history 90% of it would be asians and blacks killing eachother right?
@steveburtonomaha
@steveburtonomaha 9 жыл бұрын
+TheBrother171 whether or not you realize it, the fact that you said it was biased was based upon the context of historical information that you gathered from whatever source. History is always taught from a perspective of the writer and will contain biases, and it is the duty of the reader/student to sort out fact from opinion. History is worth discussing because it is the context from which we based our own worldviews and opinions.

Steve Burton Most europeans learn the racist biased bullshit history that includes everything about white people and nothing about any other race. Most europeans would tell you white men have always been the world's leading power.

+jdawn1982 Agreed. I know some U.S. history, but most of it was learned in high school (for non-U.S. cultures that means grades 9-12, usually ages 13-17) at a point when I really could not have cared less about it. I was actually more interested in the ancient history courses they had about Rome and Greece. Ireland and Scotland seemed like exotic places to me then, and still do somewhat, but I don't know much of their histories and wouldn't expect them to know much of U.S. history either.

In some schools in America we study Europe extensively. Please don't think America is so self centered that we don't care about our outside world. We do care and we may be more self aware but I feel like that's just how we are traditionally but we do learn about the rest of the world. Its a requirement in my school and many other schools in my area. They like ask us to fill in the countries on a blank map, we must know current rulers, know a good chunk of history etc. I feel like we do a pretty good job at trying to know the rest of our world. I don't know when my knowledge of what I've learned about Tibet or something will come in handy but hopefully some day it does.

Christian Paula I think you're kinda taking it out of context what I'm talking about. when it's just the shorten version. It's like how Nigeria isn't just called Nigeria but that's what it called by majority of people or how the UK isn't really the UK. It's the nickname and I'm going from there. The video said American history. I'm not talking as a north American. I'm talking as an American.

Wow, I'm actually impressed with how much they know about our history... Ngl, I don't really know any of their history (except we did learn in school about the IRA, Ireland separating from North Ireland). Which makes me think the Irish are more like us, they don't want to be controlled by some outdated weird monarchy and were willing to fight for their freedom. So they seem pretty cool to me...

My own mother asked the German student we hosted if they had smart phones in Germany and my German teacher if they have zoos in Germany. My stepcousin asked if he knew a person with a stereotypical name of his choice, of which I cannot remember right now. My dad warned me about the alleged anti-American stigma in Germany, and I never once had a bad encounter with a German. I only met kind, friendly people, some of whom were fascinated by America and asked many, much more intelligent questions than the questions that were asked to the Germans. Most typed in better English than people I know have typed, too. I was the only person in my World War II class able to label Belgium on a map, and another student the only one able to label Romania, and I am legitimately concerned that many of my peers would correct you if you said "Austria" by saying "Australia*" I had to correct my government teacher when he thought the British flag was the English one and the English one was the British one. Mind you these are my peers, not my friends. I don't usually associate with stereotypes. Truthfully, the only history I remember our school teaching is history in which we were involved, and events such as the French Revolution, inspired by our own. Most Americans MIGHT know of the potato famine, and you'll find it's rare to meet one who knows of Irish enslavement, which our schools have carefully hidden away in favor of African enslavement. I don't blame Americans for not knowing of details like the firebombing of Dresden and Hamburg because most countries tuck their shame away, but what IS taught should NOT be inaccurate. We teach American kids that Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack as if we didn't have the hints in front of us, and World War I is being removed from the curriculum unfortunately. But if we have time to learn about ancient civilizations like the Mayans and Aztecs that most Americans forget about because our 5th and 6th grade minds were so terribly bored of those topics, we have the time to learn about the rest of the damn world. Those of you who defend our cultural awareness, I don't know if you're biased because of your friends or if you somehow really do live in a region of surprisingly cultured individuals, but these are people I've met, and my family, not my friends. It isn't a biased news story in Britain that specifically picks out the dumb ones for entertainment. These are your average, everyday students, and they can't use commas, semi-colons, hyphens, and keep their choice in vocabulary at elementary levels, they can't tell you shit about the outside world, and don't know their own laws. I know my comment is terribly long and many will not agree with me, but I'm telling you my personal experiences, not fact, and I acknowledge that my personal experiences are not representative of our entire population. I'm just really pissed that so few people I've met would be able to tell me the difference between England and Britain, the difference between Britain and the UK, and would probably assume Ireland to be a part of Britain if they somehow knew Britain is more than just England.

Matthew Baldwin People constantly make the argument that thje Civil War was about racism, but Abe Lincoln was racist. "My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union." He never cared about ending slavery. He only freed slaves because it helped win the war. People need to realize he wasn't an abolitionist.

+Tyler Gray Soooo... If you are having a conversation with someone that involves, oh I don't know... The Russian Revolution or the Boxer Rebellion, you're going to stop, pull out your phone and say "Hey, hang on a sec... I need to Google this." There was no such thing as Google until like, 17 years after I graduated. If we wanted to learn something "casually", we had to go to these places called "libraries" and read *gasp* books. The point is, the American education system is designed to teach people how to conform and to prepare them for a life of punching a time clock. Not to actually learn anything more important than that.
@JaskierLokkison93

+thstephen To be fair, you don't have to Google it at the moment it's brought up in a conversation and yes, I can see you not having Google then...but you have it now. It's never to late to read up on History in a casual manner and going to a library is nice and I do love to read an actual book (GASP someone from my generation READING off PAPER!) I like to have Google on hand with PDFs that I can save and not worry about losing it to time or really un-book friendly children. Google-ing something should never be looked at as something that you should laugh about or make it sound like that person is dumb because "Back in YOUR day you had walk up a hill both ways to get to a library to look up anything!". Books have to be printed on paper and when the information becomes outdated, it remains on the shelf and continues to give wrong information to people, Google on the other hand can be changed to fit the correct information given. MY point is, It is never to late to learn and Googling is more reliable way to do it if School isn't teaching you what you need and if your book in the library is already checked out, or outdated.

I would think most school districts have a curriculum that includes most of these topics. Ireland usually doesn't get a lot of focus in world history because it's a very small part of the world that hasn't had as huge an impact as the aforementioned subjects.

+SippinonMickeys I heard of this a little while ago and, while I don't remember where they found the information, it was said that an Irish king sailed off to the west after having a vision of some sort. Forgot what happened when he came back but it obviously wasn't recorded all that well. It was even said that there was an Irish Catholic cross carved on a cave wall somewhere in North America. I'm sorry that I can't remember where I heard this, I'll let you know if I find out, and as the commentor said, the Scandinavians said they weren't the first. In fact, there is some strange evidence in North America that points towards the Insular Celts. An Mississipian language of the Native Americans closely, if not identically, resembles Ohgam, the serpeant mound, in I believe is in either Ohio or Indiana, resembles only mounds in Celtic lands, and there is a pre-colonization built stone structure found just outside the Boston area; the nearby Native Americans or any tribes close in proximity used stone of anykind for any building. Sorry again, I'm probably talking too much, aren't I?

Are you kidding me?! Have you been to every country in Europe to study for every year of first and second level education? Completely impossible! Just because you studied in some European country for a year, and there's no American history in that year, it doesn't mean it's not taught well! And if it was at third level education, then what you're saying is even more absurd. The country in question here is Ireland. And I assure you, there is plenty of American history taught here. The junior and the leaving certificate examinations have strict syllabuses, which American history features quite a lot in, for the junior cert, at least (I didn't do history for the leaving cert).

Did the long black haired guy with the beard seriously say that Thanksgiving is "a horrible time to be an American"?. Really?. A time where you get to eat lots of delicious food and nobody gives a shit, a time where you spend extra time with family and friends and a time where you give thanks for what you have. Yeah, Thanksgiving is most definitely the most horrible time to be an American. *sarcasm*.

See the funny thing about that is, we don't give two fucks if you know anything about us. The rest of the world seems to throw a fit more about how "everyone should know everything about America" than the majority of Americans I've met. We literally don't care if you know anything about us, or talk about us, or don't like us or whatever the rest of the world bitches about. If you're not american, why would we expect you to know everything about our history? Personally, I know very little about any other country's history, but that could just be saying something about our shitty educational system.

John made a wrong assumption so I told him how it really is. All I ever see is other countries constantly bitching about how America is this or America is that and after a while it gets annoying because they act like they know everything but their comment shows they don't know shit. If you don't like America, don't come here. We honestly don't care. But don't sit here and act like you know everything about us. Then they get mad because we stereotype them when they stereotype us twice as bad. It's just annoying. So yes when you go around making stupid assumptions, I'm going to tell you you're wrong.
@Charizarzar
@Charizarzar 10 жыл бұрын
Analyssa Cordova The best thing to do is to not stereotype back, because you end up upsetting the majority of people who don't say nasty stereotypes about the Americans. But also the principle of saying you don't care about something loses focus when you proceed to rant about it, in future it might simply be better to rant. :P
@ignorethisusername

Maybe stereotype is the wrong word. Other countries don't seem to understand American humor, while they just stereotype us. No one honestly believes the British have tea with the queen. There are different accents in the us as well, something they seem to have a hard time understanding. It's either us asking questions or making a joke about something that seems to piss them off. Everytime I see a video like this involving America and different countries, for every one nice comment I see, I see about 10 more bitching about America. And I don't care in the sense that it affects my daily life. I don't care if you come here or don't. I don't care if you learn about us or not, as long as is correct information. But when it's wrong (like the majority of comments I see), then yes, I care.

There are so many comments for this video, saying how Americans expect other countries to know our history. I can only speak for myself... But how can I expect you to know something, when I don't even know it all that well? To be honest, there are a lot of people out there that are history buffs. And then there are those of us that are useless when it comes to regurgitating facts. Also, I honestly don't understand why so many people are arguing in the comments. It is just one video about people talking about history. Who cares where you are from? At the end of the day, this is still youtube. There are better things you could be doing, then arguing it up in the comments.

+pheonix1222 Yeah, most of what I remember from learning US history (and I'm American) is how a lot of the soldiers in Valley Forge didn't have shoes for the winter. They harped on and on about that, when so much else got glossed over or skipped entirely. And world history went by in a flash. "Hope you didn't blink, now let's go back to Valley Forge." Ugh. And of course, the down side of US history is covered up like nothing else. I would be extremely surprised to find even one in ten people on the street knowing what eugenics means along with the implications of how many people believed it was a worthy cause.

There are as many misconceptions about Pilgrims as there are about Thanksgiving. One, they didn't dress like that. They were forced to flee for being religious pains in the asses (weren't repressed so much as trying to force their specific beliefs onto everyone) and stayed with the Dutch while trying get their shit together, and that was how the English viewed the Dutch. In reality, they wore simple English period clothes, and the handful of soldiers with them had late-period armor that looked a bit like that of Spanish conquistadors, or Italian Renaissance mercenaries, which a lot of English explorers like Drake and Raleigh also had. Two, the Pilgrims actually did get along with the Natives. There were one or two specific groups that were rivals of the tribes that they had made peace with, but other than them, the Pilgrims and Natives enjoyed about 50 years of peace. It was when the non-Pilgrim English colonists realized that there was now a viable colony in the North that they started moving over and expanding into territory the Pilgrims had agreed to leave alone. Three, the Natives actually saved the Pilgrims from starving their first year, and a native from what is now Maine named Samoset helped them collect lobster and venison. The local tribes requested he be sent South because he already spoke English via earlier coastal loggers that weren't able to make a stable colony through winter.

Don't fret. Most Americans couldn't do much better. (lol) We learn very little through any kind of schooling about World History. Think about how big the rest of the world is, just can't know everyone's history. All countries do tend to focus on their own history. Consider that Ireland is just a little bigger than the State of Ohio, the US history of the States is a lot to take in itself. Americans get the big picture events of world history but usually not more than that. If we want to learn more we've got to do it on our own. And to study Ireland or say Belgium would be like someone from Ireland deciding to study the history of the State of Virginia. If you really want to know you got to do it on your own. I recently did more research study about WWI. With that I ended up going from there to learn more about the Balkins, Ottoman Empire... etc. and went deep into the history. Wow, I just typed a bunch. Anyway, I think this video is good to show that we just don't know a lot about each other's history (details).

Native Americans can be from any part of the Americas, and Indian is a traditional alternate form for Native American. If you want to be thoroughly pedantic, it could be said that no human being is native to the Americas. After all, the Native Americans migrated to America just like everyone else, they just did it a bit sooner. Genetically, they are closely related to the East Asians.

Yes, it's been scientifically proven through the magic of DNA. Historically it was just a hypothesis, but through DNA we now know with 100% certainty that Native Americans are genetically a sub-branch of the East Asians. In any event, it wouldn't matter if we didn't have that DNA evidence, because humans are not native to the Americas which means they came from somewhere else regardless.. which we know to be Africa anyway. If humans were native to the Americas, that would mean all humans were native to the Americas.. the same species can't have evolved separately in two different places, obviously.

Discovered always means from the point of view of the civilization telling the tale. America's linguistic, legal, and cultural background are firmly European. Our population is traditionally white European for the most part, and so when we say "discovered" we mean from the point of view of our civilization, which is Western European civilization. The reason the Native Americans didn't "discover" it is because that information was not relayed to Western Europe in a usable format.. even when the Vikings "discovered" America, we don't count that because though they were part of our civilization, they did not transmit this information in a usable way to the rest of us. Columbus made the existence of America universally known to Western civilization and opened the door toward exploration, colonization, and eventually (though indirectly) the founding of American society.

Are you talking about renouncing citizenship or simply living abroad? Because you don't need an Irish passport to live in Ireland.. just the proper visas. I think most Americans would not smile upon renouncing, and it's a really bad idea if you ever want to live in the US again.. it's almost impossible to become a US citizen again.. and legally you're treated as a felon basically for many purposes if they even let you back in on a visa.. you can never own a firearm for example, even under circumstances where other non-citizens could.

"Your country"? Lmao. After the colonists' victory over Britain (using guerrilla warfare and terror tactics taught to them by the Natives and while Britain was also at war with Spain on the other side of a fucking ocean, of course), what's the first thing they did? Celebrate their newfound freedom from oppression ("oppression" btw is a pretty harsh term for Britain's treatment of the American colonies when you compare it to somewhere like India or the Carribean)? Nope. You invaded Canada, because in your logic, you had earned the entirety of the New World. Well, I say you invaded... you tried to. Failed miserably. Lost the first "battle" after surrendering a whole fort without a single shot being fired. Then the Canadians (loose term for them, at this point it wasn't even a united or established nation) came down to Washington and burned down the first White House, which, being made of brick, was actually pink. Look it up. After that the rest of North America pretty well decided to leave you to your own devices. Good call, cuz when you had nobody else to go to war with, you divided yourselves into North and South and fought yourself lol. God bless America.

I read some history on Ireland, and its contention with Britain and the crown. I would make such a great book or tv series. Clan politics had almost as much to do with Irish history as did its foreign politics. The thing that probably lead to the British having an advantage is Ireland was not untied as a state but loyalty was given to individual leaders. I enjoy reading Irish and Scottish history because part of my ancestry comes from those places. Many of the people from the southern US have blood that comes from Ireland and Scotland.

Obviously you have not studied in the States. We study many countries/empires in depth. From Ancient history (of Africa, Asia, Germanic Tribes, and me so-America) to Middle Ages (revolved mainly around Europe) to in depth European History, to world history (that covers many revolutions) and we study our own history after all that then finish history with modern world history.

Pssh. We do not "study Europe extensively", unless you're counting World Wars. American history education starts considerably earlier than 11th grade. Every social studies class you've had prior to that covered American history.

I don't know why people in the comments are fighting about American History..( of what the U.S learns). For those of you who say we don't dive into other countries have either not gone to a school in the United States or had a VERY poor education system. From elementary school you are taught the basics of how the U.S was discovered and also a mix of other countries. At that time you will learn where the countries are on the map. Middle school (6-8th grade) gets more extensive as you learn about ancient culture and what happened there..i.e, Rome, China, most of Europe and South America, things like that. From 6-8 grade you will mostly focus on other countries while also learning about the U.S (8th grade you go into more modern times) . In high school you dive into American history, you will take World History in 9th grade and American History in 10th, in 11th government ( all gov.) and 12th grade a mix of everything, as it depends what the school district wants you to learn. Sorry for my paragraph, but I wanted to clear things up...and don't say I'm outdated on my facts when I'm in High School right now, and I know what I'm learning. Peace

I actually did learn some world history in public school (though it was a bit watered down). I learned more by reading. But one thing was a little weird, we had to take a state history class. Like one state is better and/or worse than another or more important. It seemed silly to me then and still seems silly.

While there was some flighting between natives and settlers, mostly there was cooperation. The settlers had far superior technology, but they need help to master there new land. It was beneficial to both parties to work together, and they did. The belief that settlers basically committed genocide isn't close to correct. Most of the tribes were brutal and adding technology to the existing fray may not have helped the situation, but it also doesn't constitute genocide. Many more natives and settlers were partners than enemies. The primary enemy of a native American was another native American from a different tribe.

Evolution Glitch I can't even go into all the real history and how your claims are wrong. Mostly, because I'm very tired. I get people constantly expecting Natives to be their 'teachers', usually with obnoxious "Oh,yeah? PROVE IT!" for things they could easily google themselves, but won't. So, you finally give them links, etc, and you get exactly what we've come to expect: "NUH UH!" or, "I'm not reading that!". When it happens day in and day out, it is exhausting. Plus, I had both a pipe break and water heater went out on the same day, so it's been a long day of dealing with that.

shenandoahliberty That's a pretty long response for someone who's to tired to post links. Just so you know, I based my responses off of research, not popular rhetoric. It's not a polite but it history but it is accurate. I am sorry if it hurts your feelings, but it doesn't change what happened.

Evolution Glitch Well, guess what? I don't give a shit what you think. My computer is old, and opening the links in the first place is a slow, arduous task that I'm not willing to do for idiots who are just going to pull a toddler tantrum and refuse to read it. I don't care what you based your bullshit on, it's still bullshit. Again, this is the information I deal with on a daily basis, either with the public, or in our 'secret squirrel NDN meetings'. Your information is based on some bullshit re-write whitewash of history, and it is simply not true.

I am American, and I started learning world history since 6th grade. It was called World Civilizations. We learned about China and their dynasties, Ancient Egypt, and European history. 7th Grade focused a lot more on different religions and cultures around the world. 8th grade we learned about American history. That covered from when Native Americans were around to 1960's Civil Rights movement. I had to memorize the Preamble of the Declaration of Independence. In high school 9th grade we didn't have history instead it was 1/2 a year of Health 1/2 a year Geography. 10th World Civilizations again but it was more about the bloody and gore stuff that wasn't deemed appropriate for a 6th grader to read or see photos of. Then 11th grade we studied U.S History again and 12th Government/Economics. I don't know where you went to school, but I learned a lot of facts. I am a Californian, and we don't even have the best public school system that even compares to New York. I feel like we went into detail too. I even know Marie Antoinette's last words were her saying she was sorry for stepping on her executioner's foot. I feel that no one would know the full extent of a country's history unless they were from that country or a fan of that country. In school we have so many countries to go over its impossible to learn them all in the proper depth they deserve. Every country has a history and every country has blood on their hands. No country is an exception to those facts. No matter where we come from we need to be proud of it because every country has faced its own tribulations and succeeded to progression. The question of how long it took doesn't matter. What does matter is that they are still striving to be better.
