Lacrosse is actually the fastest growing sport in America, and like most newer activities, will take a little bit to fully take off. I've seen towns where half the town comes out for its school's games and it's a tradition. Baseball is actually in decline, and hockey and lacrosse are pretty much cousins. It is mostly people with little experience of the sport that think of it as a "pussy version of football for rich white kids that can't play baseball." It takes athleticism, thinking on the run, and strength to play well, never mind hand eye coordination. For all the Irish out there, I don't have much experience on curling, but I'm sure they are both good sports, and like most sports, should not be compared. The reason it is seen as a rich white kid's sport is because of the cost of equipment, as well as the cost of summer travel teams or lessons, which can be in the thousands. Other than that it is a sport which a lot of people enjoy, and more so every year.

JJ Hooles Sorry to burst your bubble, but rugby is the fastest growing sport. look it up.

yo hi I did look it up, and there was one link saying rugby is, two saying lacrosse is, and one say obstacle course racing is. I guess they are all fast growing, whether rugby or lacrosse is I really don't care, my point was that it is growing a lot so that's why a lot of people judge it preemptively without knowing it.

What you all would call “chopping” is legal in lacrosse and is actually quite important for defensive plays, and you can hit their hands as well as their stick. Beyond that though, the rules for contact are basically the same in both sports. Both are very physically demanding sports with a good amount of contact and are largely played at an amateur level. I played highschool lacrosse 05-08 and it was pretty brutal. The skill level was pretty high, everyone could move the ball fast, but since a lot of us also played travel hockey there would be some pretty big and devastating hits. Played middy/long pole mid and would be black and blue after the games. Not sure on the rules now but back then shoulder pads and kidney protectors were optional if I remember right. @gamestarr169 жыл бұрын
john kehoe The problem is you're only looking to compare a sport you love to a sport you don't understand. I would never compare the 2 because a) they are nothing alike, and b) I don't know enough about hurling to talk about it. Sure lacrosse players may not bash into each other without any padding, but acting like you don't have to be in peak physical condition, and be prepared to get whacked by a 6 foot metal pole on a daily basis is just ignorance. Let somebody break a metal or wooden pole over your arm/chest/stomach, and see if you don't gain a little respect for the sport. Not to mention the extreme amount of talent it takes to play lacrosse.
@gamestarr169 жыл бұрын
gamestarr16 also, the game is 100% full contact as long as you don't hit them from behind, and as long as you aren't completely malicious with your stick, or hit them in the head with it, hitting them with your stick is perfectly legal. 3 minutes of a hour long game doesn't do it justice.

Way to show them a shitty game. Find a game with some decent hits and a game where the defense actually does their job rather than just letting the offense run right into the net.
@SirKingHoff8 жыл бұрын
+KingInky13 show them a highlight video right, like the Maryland hidden ball, the Powells. Cant get a grasp of the full sport by watching just the first quarter of a quarterfinal game.

Bruh it was just an offensive highlight reel, just look up lacrosse hits. It makes football look like some kidergarteners playing in the sand

The Outhouse Studios Doesn't change my statement at all. Show them actual lacrosse. Show some amazing saves, some big hits, some nicely set plays, some real faceoffs, etc. The guys watching even make a statement that there's no contact and that they'd like to see more stick checks. I played lacrosse from the 4th grade (at a time when only 6th graders and up were allowed to play in my area) all the way through high school. I've been going to the men's NCAA finals since 2001 when they were still held at Rutgers. I'm well aware of what lacrosse should look like, which is why I was upset that they didn't represent it well in the video they showed people who had never seen anything of the game previously. Cheers!

Gianna Lal yea because they have the same rules as male lax. My sister played for a team called the ladyhawks. It was fun teaching her.
@GirlsWhoGame8 жыл бұрын
It's actually a different game. The sticks are even different: men's has a huge basket and women's is smaller and shallower. It shifts the focus from brute force to precision. Baseball may be superior to softball, but women's lacrosse is more interesting than men's.

I'm not trying to be that "butthurt american", but these guys must have been picked out for the video because they don't know anything about the sport, and like making fun of the u.s.
@TimothyGreenTRiG8 жыл бұрын
+Flemming Anderson Well, not knowing anything about the sport is kind of the point, see "First Time" in the title. As for making fun of the US, nah, they just make fun of everything. They're Irish; it's what we do. Watching Americans take Irish sarcasm seriously in the comments is kind of fun, though. Also, they are, of course, watching this while thinking of hurling, a rather less tame sport. TRiG.

Yeah in Canada and the US but we adopted it as our national sport so it's Canadian. Plus more Canadians play it per capita than Americans Bassrocker19

I definatly thought the Canadian national sport was hockey?
@karmicobsession16369 жыл бұрын
It was first played by Iroquois indians in what is now the northern united states, thus it is american. But a version of lacrosse originated in Canada, but modern lacrosse resembles how the native americans played.

I don't get it. Are they allowed run around forever with the ball in their net things? Where's the fun in that? Are they allowed run into each other? Why the armour?! How do you get the ball out of someone's net? Its a bit silly now lads. Go on, play hurling lads.
@samuelcoughlin91659 жыл бұрын
You get the ball and try to make a play while passing the ball. The tackling is complicated, there's different rules on that, mostly concerning dropping your hips. The "armor" is to minimize injury and bruising. You have to stick check or wait until they drop the ball to get the ball. I hope I answered all your questions:)
@josephpetty17249 жыл бұрын
It's basically like soccer, football, and hockey all in one sport, you have the running back and forth like soccer, the hitting like football. You can actually somewhat "tackle" someone with your stick you have to hold it in front of you horizontally and you can hit the person with the ball, and the gloves and pads are basically like hockey you can use lacrosse gloves in hockey they are the same thing.
@SebideeTW9 жыл бұрын
Ok, well are they allowed to hold the ball in the net as long as you like? What's going to stop me from just holding onto the ball and barging up to the goal and firing at it point blank?
@SebideeTW9 жыл бұрын
In hurling (which I think is the nearest sport to it) you can run into people and push them around. Thing is though that you can only hold the ball in your hand for a few steps and the rest of the time you have to balance it on the stick so it's easy enough for people to take it off you. In lacrosse it looks like you could just run right up to the goal without worrying!

Lacrosse is a a lot more physical then what these clips show you. Look up lacrosse hits and it will show how aggressive it can get

@EarlSquirrelsonn8 жыл бұрын
+Morgan McShane alright. Yeah it's not an easy sport, but it doesn't compare to hurling. Hurling is just on another level.
@alastairward27748 жыл бұрын
***** Morgan McShane Dad always told me the lack of padding on hurlers was a sign of their skill. WTF is up with Lacrosse anyway? "Get the ball!" "I can't!" "Why not?" "It's in this dude's basket, he won't give it back!" "Ask him for it!" "He says no, now he's walking away from me!" "Nooooooooo!"

I don't normally watch sports and have actually never seen professional Lacrosse but we had to play in high school gym class and I fractured 3 fingers when I was whacked on the hand with someone's stick. I didn't see it happen so I was never sure if it was on purpose or by accident.
@xxamazingjayxx8 жыл бұрын
+Phil Nolan i was also whacked in the hand during lacrosse in high school gym class! i talked to a friend of mine who played lacrosse, and she said that when two players from opposite teams hit each other's sticks, theyre "checking" each other, but i guess some people take it too far lol
@atsenhakeniate8 жыл бұрын
+Jay Forst no your friend is actually wrong. When whacking you stick it's called slashing. And hitting them with they're stick is checking. And women's lacrosse their is no hitting

Picked it up my sophomore year on an actual team and love it. Not saying that would be your case, just saying.
