definitely mix it, malibu and pineapple juice is the best base for mixing drinks ever. I mean that honestly, never had a bad cocktail with that base. Even with jager, though I like jager. You would think pineapple, coconut and black licorice would be a horrible mix, it tastes like pineapple mixed with orange juice that was unsweetened.

The Barbancourt they tasted was only 3 stars (the company has a rating system). We use that for our teas/toddies and other mixed drinks. A bottle for straight sipping would have to be at least 5 stars, anything aged over ten years.

The standard Mount Gay (not the XO Extra Old) is actually very smooth...so smooth that it is really easy to forget that you are drinking straight hard liquor and not some kind of vanilla-ey mid-alcohol mixed drink. It also mixes very well into alcy milkshakes (like french vanilla ice cream, ceylon cinnamon, whole milk, Mount Gay rum blended together...softly mix in some candied pineapple afterward).

My friend in WW2 the Canadian Navy used to give a ration of two shots a day of Caribbean rum to sailors. It boosted morale and warmed them up especially if they just came off watch on deck. Many were none drinkers and so one could trade their rum ration for other items like candy, cigarettes, or Coke.

I'd recommend Zaya Gran Reserva 12 year old Rum for anyone who's interested in some really good rum that isn't super expensive. It's made in Trinidad, and you can find it in most liquor stores for about $35. I've tried a lot of different rum, and it's my favorite.

Mount Gay XO is one of the best rums, period. I have a bottle right here and it is a special treat for me. Dark rums can be a little much for those used to crap like Bacardi and Malibu.
