After googling: It's called washing soda (sodium carbonate) or lye (sodium hydroxide) treatment. And pretzels aren't glazed but they get plunged into lye. At home you might glaze them with a brush. By the way, we do have sweet pretzels (without additional salt, e.g. New Years Pretzels) in Germany, but they're certainly much better than those they ate and are made of a different dough.

I am a Brit living in Germany. I would recommend. Leberkase (Liver Cheese) Which is really a pork (max 5% liver) meatloaf but ultra blended smooth. Its baked and has the texture of a semi hard cheese hence the name. Cut about 1cm thick, warm from the oven on a crusty half roll with sweet grain mustard. Oh my god its so good. Most of these are pretty much staples here. Not so much the Bratwurst and Sauerkraut. Bratwurst in a roll is EVERYWHERE. Most Sauerkraut i see is red cabbage variety boiled in a vinegar/apple juice mix and is again amazingly good. Bit 1970"s cliche in Britain but real schwarzwälder kirschen torte (Black forest gateaux) from the black forest region is also awesome. So full of Kirsche i have become half cut from ONE slice!

I didn't get a chance to see any of the rest of the country but the food we had, from schnitzel(s) in the gausthauses to a 5 course meal in one of the local dining establishments, was first rate! Unfortunately, I only had a chance to try about 15 of the different schnitzels! Schnitzel is thinly sliced pieces of meat without bones, which are usually additionally knocked flat with a meatball (plating iron), which makes the meat more delicate by breaking the muscle fibers. Schnitzel is not a typical German food, the Viennese schnitzel is known and it comes from Austria. Or a cordon bleu from France, is a Wiener Schnitzel with cheese.

Have they tried Durian Fruit yet? I would watch that.
@GustavMeyrink7 жыл бұрын
Where Durian is native you are not allowed to take it to the cinema because it stinks. There is a particular cheese in France you are not allowed to take on public transport for the same reason. Forgot its name but a french friend had some when we visited. We thought he had something rotting in his bin but it was the cheese in the fridge, wrapped in paper, rolled up in clingfilm and stuck in an airtight plastic food container. I nearly fainted when I opened the fridge...

went to ireland a couple of times, cruising along the Shannon. at every town we went to the pub/restaurant and I always, ALWAYS ordered the apple pie for dessert. best apple pie I've ever had. one better than the other. i don't understand why they gave you german apfelstrudel.

I know. Those are about as distinctly German as I am... and my family hasn't lived in Europe in about 300 years.

Dear facts team, may i suggest a couple of German dishes to you should you ever decide to do a follow up to this video. For instance I've never seen a video of anyone trying Reibekuchen a type of savory pan fryed potato cake often eaten with applesauce or maybe Apfel-Rotkohl (red cabagge cooked with apples) and Kartoffelknödel (a sort of potato dumplig) the traditional side dishes to go with the Roulade you had in your video. Currywurst and Pommes rot weiß (chips with ketchup and mayo) are kind of the german equivalent to fish and chips I think. And for something you either love or hate, how about Rollmops or Matjes (though the latter is shared with the Dutch I think) on German rolls or bread. And there is so much more :)

THATS GERMAN ENGINEERING :-) .....BY THE WAY BREZEL TASTES GREAT WITH BUTTER
Live in WI, USA and I forgot how big the German influence is here for just a second. I just kept watching like "GET TO THE WEIRD STUFF!" I personally made everything on this list on the regular. Except the first bit, that is my bf's mom's specialty.

I am actually so grateful for the comments (and that's why I love to read them). I would not have known that those foods were not German, if I didn't read below. It's very hard in Ohio to find places that serve authentic foods. Usually it's like this - it's what people think, but it's all wrong. I love pierogi which I guess is Polish, but I often see served with kraut, which I associate w/German?.. So - food can be confusing. But I find it ALL delicious!
@martina57197 жыл бұрын
Kraut is eaten all over eastern europe + the german speaking Alpine regions of europe. And many "german desserts" are of Austrian origin.

BRATwurst has to be grilled on a grill or frying pan not to be cooked! You don't know anything about culture and know those people have a wrong impression

As a german girl I have to say: Our Kohlrouladen are actually made with minzed meat, pretzels have salt on them and you eat them with butter, Schnitzel has salt and pepper on it, then is covered in flour, then eggs, then the breadcrumbs and is then fried, our sausages look nothing like that, just google Bratwurst, our Sauerkraut is actually sweet and sour at the same time not just sour and our Apfelstrudel is made with cinnamon apples.

While in the army, I was sent to Kosovo for 12 months. We used to find excuses to go to the German camp because they had a restaurant on post. The food was delicious. We also trained up in Germany and had German vendors on post. It was there I had my very first ham hock. Mmmmm. However, the guys selling shaved ice came around. Here in the states we serve it with sweet flavored syrups like cherry or lemon. Not in Germany. They flavored theirs with Johnny Walker Red, Jack Daniels, Smirnoff and Hennessy. That's how they roll.
