I'm American, but I've often thought when watching these that on MANY, MANY, MANY occasions whoever it was that was cooking whatever it is they happen to be eating that day literally had NO IDEA what they were doing and what they got to try was a HIGHLY INACCURATE portrayal of that particular food.

@yossarian67996 жыл бұрын
@@numbskullali9836 I'm an American who lived in Cape Town for 17 years (my parents were in the Diplomatic corps). I know the local food and I doubt it's changed much since I last visited there in 2001. As others have mentioned, the bunny chow wasn't proper (proper bunny chow uses a hollowed-out end of an American-style bread loaf), but the Irish seemed to like it. The melktert looked a tad runny, but no more so than half the countless melkterts I ate there, yet the Irish seemed to like it. The bobotie looked a bit ill, but no two South Africans make bobotie the same (we never put raisins in ours because my Mum hates raisins), and again the Irish seemed to like it. And as I mentioned in another comment, boerwors doesn't just look like dog crap, it tastes like it too. It matters not how it was cooked; it's going to be dry and weird-tasting. What's sad is that none of the South Africans here seemed to even notice the "but the Irish seemed to like it" aspect...
@sahilrattan66806 жыл бұрын
That was not a bunny at all, unsliced bread is used not a bun, then Durban curry is unique not like Indian nor Pakistani curry. Also there has to be lots of gravy that soaks into the bread.

Ok...so... 1) Boerewors is not usually eaten by itself and the sausage they had looked like a sad version of boerie. We eat it with pap & chakalaka, in a roll with Mrs Balls (yip, that's the brand name) chutney, with potato salad...Irish should love that one ;) And most traditionally, braai (barbecue) meat is eaten with toasted cheese, tomato & onion sandwiches also done on the braai. 2) That Bunny Chow looked fancy as fuck! Usually we just literally hollow out half a loaf of bread and stuff it with curry. That one looked good and if they were complimenting the lamb, this one they got spot on. 3) Again, Bobotie is usually not eaten alone. We eat it with rice made yellow with tumeric and other spices. It is also yummy to eat it with shaved almonds and traditionally there are raisins in the rice. And chutney is always welcome :) 4) That milk tart looked sad as fuck! My 10 year old cousin makes better looking milk tart than the one on the video! That tart definitely looked like it had not been set long enough (we warm it up again after it has set to serve, but then it holds more than that one was doing). Also, the pastry didn't sound right. Just sounds like the whole tart was under cooked (especially if some were finding the taste eggy). It is quite a traditional dish, but it gets jazzed up and tarted up for fancier places. Also, we have a shot based on this SA favourite. The best I've ever made was with Amarula (Baileys will also work well), condensed milk and sprinkled cinnamon on top. You're welcome!

The sad thing is there are people selling South African boerewors in Ireland. We lived there for over 2 years and we used to order boerewors and Biltong from a guy called Lukas. They also had contacts for rusks, milk tart, hertzoggies etc. that stuff is out there, Facts should have got it right. ALSO, what the hell type of bun did they put the bunny chow in??? I know that you can get full loaves in Ireland, that would have been much better to use.

I half suspect they make the dishes themselves from recipes, or get local places to make them. When people move to a different country and open a restaurant featuring the food of their home, they tend to change the recipes to fit the tastes of wherever they are. This is why in Chinese restaurants in the US have food that isn't Chinese, like orange chicken and several other things that aren't even Chinese. The draw of the restaurant ends up being the type of flavoring/food rather than the actual dishes. (BTW, the most popular dishes from Chinese restaurants were made specifically for the west. In other words, they're not Chinese.)

1st Dish: That boerewors they had looks so sad, and as if they prepared it by boiling it in water. The sausage has not been browned at all. They should have rather just made it on a braai (barbeque), it would have at least looked less insipid. And since when is boerewors dry and tasteless? Always packed with a good meat to fat ratio and prepared with lovely herbs and spices. Could have had it with mash at least. Lol, my dad always complains that Chakalaka is too hot. My mum always makes tomato and onion stew instead. 3rd Dish: Lol, when my mum was studying at university back in the day, a Zulu girl down the hall from her used to make her rice with yellow food colouring. Wahahaha, my mum quickly introduced her to tumeric. 4th Dish: That milk tart has no crust at all. Milk tart is always better with a crust. I agree, looks very sad indeed. Also, only 4 dishes? Well, at least they tried. Guess making koeksisters was too difficult. Peppermint crisp tart? There are many ways to make that lovely dessert, too. Pap and chakalaka? Malva pudding with custard? At least you tried. Thanks for representing my country.

Uuuuuhm... These are all either Afrikaans or Indian food... Granted they are "South African" but they're not national dishes. We have the Zulus, Sothos, Pedis, Xhosas, Ndebeles, Vhendas, the Khoisan, etc and each "tribe" have their main dishes. Just thought I should throw that out there... ❤

@leslie-anngray54036 жыл бұрын
@Captain Chaos hahaha I'm not african but south african, unfortunately. At least I have Scottish and Irish heritage so that's something to be proud of 👍and no not because of my people it's everyone in this country not just "my people", "your people" also have issues.
@leslie-anngray54036 жыл бұрын
@Captain Chaos that was an unfortunate and a sad event that happened and isn't something to be proud of, but it happened and just because of that doesn't mean we can't be proud of our heritage or who we are due to our history. That's why south africa is the way it is.

Nina Howarth I'm guessing it was just misspelled. I've noticed spelling mistakes a few times in videos where they list the ingredients on screen.

That milk tart looks so sad. I'd recommend making it with crust That wors is way over cooked that is why it was so dry. Cooking wors on a grill or braai ( Barbecue ) will make it so much jucier and flavorful! As a proud South African you did well on most of these the wors and milktart that needs works X3 Other then that great video!
