They're not easy to find, at least not on the cheap in my area anymore. Amazon sells all of them. Atkinson Candy Company make chick-o-sticks but never seem to have the big ones in stock or they're expensive.

I remember my grandmother used to get these candy squares in the bulk candy section and they were black licorice layered with one layer of like an orange cream fondant and another layer of the licorice and then a layer of coconut cream and then the last layer of licorice. They were little squares and they were also assorted because there were ones with a licorice, lemon cream and coconut cream, also licorice strawberry cream and coconut cream. I was very young but I remember them fondly.

I LOL'd at the sound of the bag of Circus Peanuts hitting the table. They're supposed to be soft and almost marshmallow-like, but it's like hitting the jackpot if you actually get a bag of soft ones! 😆

I know right!? When I saw Circus Peanut on the screen I immediately asked "but are they soft?" The soft ones are SO much better in texture, flavor, dissolvability, and when they're fresh enough they even taste warm.

@@Zinnian You thought right! I just had a discussion about those “circus peanuts” being the least liked candy on Halloween. We never ate anything unwrapped because of the wild “poison/razor blade conspiracy” so those “circus peanuts” would only be used as projectiles. Everyone tries one... but only once and usually just one bite... DIS GUS TING!

Root Beer totally tastes like medicine! Medicine that's been added to a sugar syrup. It's what's so alluring about it. Especially the Dad's Root Beer Barrels, they tingle like black liquorish without the super bitterness. I think we Associate the "Medicine taste" to the various crappy fruit flavors that children's medicine have to make the medicines tolerable in taste to children without adding sugar. Think of cherry cough syrup or Flintstone's multi-vitamins.

The only thing missing from my grandparents' candy dish were the red and white peppermints and the sugar coated orange gummies that looked like little orange segments. That and licorice. I just remembered they also always had the butterscotch hard candies on hand. Good times! ☺️

I grew up on these candies here in the Appalachian mountains. And yes, we also have chicken flavored crackers, which are quite different but also delicious. We also have a lot of different types of really well crafted root beers and beer and microbrewery goodness, but we also have sassafras and sarsaparilla. Good stuff! Add all of that to some fantastic good Southern cooking, and what a treat! The fun thing is that we can still get all of these today at the local Corner Market and then some from back in the day that still exist. I enjoyed watching the video! Take care!

I'm from New Jersey and my dad and I would make sassafras tea back in the late '60s-early '70s. Man, I miss that flavor. I also used to hike the Appalachian trail in boy scouts and sometimes we'd find wild teaberries up in the mountains there. I remember being absolutely delighted that they tasted EXACTLY like teaberry gum. Good times! I'm 1/8 Native American (Leni Lenape) and had relatives who lived in the Appalachian mountains. I loved it up there.

My grandmother always had a candy dish on a table in the living room and kept it stocked with those root beer barrels and butterscotch disks. My grandfather was a fiend for those and she was always hounding him to stay out of the candy! LOL

I haven't seen circus peanuts in ages. My grandfather used to buy them for me when I was a little girl, back in the 70's. We'd stop at the bait and tackle store, he'd buy me circus peanuts, and an orange crush soda, then we would go out fishing at this little fishing pond nearby. Watching you guys taste them took me back there... Good times!

My dad used to love these weird, old fashioned candies called "horehounds", which were apparently popular when he was a kid. The only place he could ever find them was a candy shop inside this little Old West style theme park near our house. My sister and I thought they were absolutely vile, which of course meant dad didn't have to worry about us stealing them. One bag would last him for ages.

Back in the '50s, Mary Jane's were a common Halloween candy. As were the root beer barrels. Most kids didn't like either. I was strange, loved both. If you handed out those vile peanuts, you would wake to heavily soaped windows (and you deserved such)... My granny and mom were expert at making old fashioned candies. Miss their creations...

Where I grew up root beer barrels were one of the candies that kids fought over. Mary Janes were fairly well-liked, though not as much as Bit-O-Honeys and certainly less than Squirrel Candies, which were the acme. I never saw anyone eat a second Circus Peanut though. I saw plenty of kids eat second Necco Wafers, and third ones, and fourth and fifth and so on - and every time wish they hadn't. It's like we were addicted to the disappointment.

Can confirm. There were indeed the candies my grandparents always had on hand. There was also a quaint little general store style mom n pop shop on the corner form the street from their house that always stocked these and the best part was the old couple who ran it kept the prices from when they were young. You could have any of these candies among other old timey treats for anywhere from a penny to a nickel a piece. Thanks for the nostalgic trip down memory lane! 😊

I love Chick O Sticks. I have a bag of them in my kitchen right now. I'm always thrown by people who hate Root Beer, or think it tastes medicinal. I grew up drinking root beer and I adore it!

I think root beer is a lot like coffee, in that if someone doesn’t like it, you introduce it to them in small amounts and have them focus on the aspects they like instead of the negative memories connected to any one flavor. I always prefer a root beer that’s heavy with the vanilla aspect, such as Boylan’s, but there are plenty that are super complex that I find it hard to imagine someone focusing on one “bad” flavor. And now that I know that Ciara hasn’t ever had root beer and seems to enjoy the flavor of these barrels, I feel compelled to send her some bottles of root beer of various companies for her to try.

The candy we got from our grandparents. They're all good. I still grab them if I spot them once in a while. Werther's original caramel hard candies, the hard strawberry candy wrapped to actually look like strawberries, Ribbon candy at Christmas and sugar coated gumdrops were often found at the grandparents houses too. Oh and of course butterscotch discs.

To get the full experience of a Chick 0 Stick, you need the actual stick variety. Used to eat those all the time as a kid. This was back in the early 90's, if I may add. They were delicious.

What a lovely walk through the years! The circus peanuts were one of my mom's favorite candies!. Many of these candies were treats for her and her siblings when they were kids during the Great Depression. All of these (and loads more) were available through the penny candy store when I was a kid back in the 1960s. Yes, the candies were a penny. The couple who ran the store would always make sure that each of us who ventured in after school would have 1 piece, so one would no go wanting. I still remember the wonder of looking at all the candy and being at a loss of which to choose. Really, a very sweet video. But on a different note, what in the world is with the Irish and root beer? That is the 1 food where I really think there is a profound difference in taste buds. Root beer is widely available here--esp with the microbrewery craze--so many varied, but yummy creamy flavors.

Back in the early 60s when we went to my dad's VERY small hometown in N Missouri, we went to the smallish general store. They still had old, creeky wood floors and ancient wood and glass display cases (like western movies depicted in the 1800s) holding candy and toys! All these were displayed in the cases. That town burned down about 50 years but the nostalgia is still fresh!

I mean, Chick-O-Sticks are still easily found in most convenience stores/grocery stores. It's usually the larger ones, but you can get them. I always pick one up on a road trip. It's just one of those snacks that feels right for a car ride.

When I worked at Subway sandwich shop back in the day (90's) near an airport, had a European gentleman come in and saw the "Root Beer" at the soda machine. He inquired as to what it was, told him to just give it a try. He tasted it and replied "Taste like mouthwash, very odd and I do not like it." The crew and I just started laughing and I said, "I could kinda understand that, especially if you have never had it before."

Every candy you tried this episode was a part of my childhood. As an adult, chick-o-sticks are still amongst my favorites but I prefer the bigger ones. I wonder if you guys would like Goya Malta it's a drink. Nothing to do with the episode I know but still curious. Growing up none of my friends or girlfriends ever liked it. Full disclosure they always tell me it's nasty. I just thought of a new drink episode for you guys. Irish people try Goya products or specifically Irish people try Goya Malta.

I believe its because in alot of Europe, medicines and toothpaste are often flavored with wintergreen, whereas in the states mint is often used. And since wintergreen is a noticeable ingredient in root beer, they tend to make that connection where we dont

In Australia, if you order a Root Beer down there, you're more likely to get some funny looks your way. Reason being, that the term "Root" in Root Beer is a euphemism for sex.

Root beer was originally created as medicine, after all: it was an extract of a wide variety of North American plant materials seen as having a tonic or medicinal value -- sassafras bark, sarsaparilla root, wintergreen, a few others -- that was fermented, with the alcohol serving as both an antiseptic and a preservative.

Fun fact! The artificial rootbeer flavor is from the chemical methyl salicylate which is also the chemical that creates the odor of wintergreen mint, hence why Seán describes it as "minty". Science!

Does anybody remember Hoffman's Cup O' Gold candy? A filled cup with marshmallow inside, with crisply, probably rice, puffs in the chocolate (I looked it up, the crunch was from minced almonds and coconut in the chocolate) but the flavor of the chocolate was very different and fantastic.

The peanut butter bars were my grandmothers FAVORITE! Between those and her making her own taffy...man I miss my Nana!! I love coconut so the Chick o Sticks were my personal favorites, my dad loves the Root Beer Barrels, those and Fireballs. Sweets have come a long way man but classics will always be just that! Growing up in the 60s my mother always bought Circus Peanuts and always smashed them before she ate them. I hated them, especially if she smashed one and then said, "Here, eat this." No thanks! I hated the texture and taste but I especially hated being expected to eat something she had messed up with her bare hands.

Actually this is a myth, there is no tangible evidence that it was based off the Gros Michel banana at all even if the taste of artificial banana would have been closer to this banana than the Cavendish banana. Artificial banana flavoring was actually created by isolating compounds in the banana. The Gros Michel banana is NOT even extinct, so anybody believing this myth has simply bought into an old wives tale. The reason why Cavendish bananas taste different is because they have less volatile compounds in them which the breakdown of these compounds in the Cavendish banana lead to a more muted less "artificial' tasting banana. The real reason artificial banana flavoring tastes why it does is not about the type of banana it was based off of, but rather practical reasons. Isoamyl acetate, the primary flavor component used to create artificial banana flavoring is simply extremely cheap to produce, that's all.

I'm eating the orange Circus Peanuts as I watch this. I'm one of the few people that I know of that REALLY likes them, and I never thought they tasted like banana. Spanger Candy sells them by the 20 pound box, but I buy from a retailer and get them a LOT cheaper.

Sassafras oil is a bitter agent similar to things like licorice, fennel, anise and other bitters commonly found in cold and cough medications. But the US banned the use of Sassafras oil in the 60s so it's no surprise that modern American root beer (which is also full of sugar) tastes nothing like the real thing of the past

Speaking of things mediciny, my grandfather used to love these hard candies called horehound drops (don't laugh). He'd offer them to his grandkids, and most of my siblings wanted nothing to do with them after trying them once. But I started really getting into them. They're unusual.

I can remember when I was 4-8 years old, we would get a little bit of allowance for doing our chores around the house and then on a Saturday morning my dad would take the 4 of us kids on a walk to the small mom and pop store down the street, they had Barrel and bins of what we called "penny candy" you could get like 2 root beer barrels for a penny. All sort of old time candy. We would leave with a little bag stuffed full of assorted candy. Licorice, taffy, chick o sticks, penny suckers all sorts of sweets. Even small packet of caramel corn and tiny crisp pretzels. Such good memories. :) I love the Chick O Sticks.

My mother loved the circus peanuts. They are a bit controversial these days as you'll find people either love them or hate them. Another favorite of hers that you guys didn't get to try is horehound candy. It's got a strange name for sure. It comes from a plant and is used in medicine and candy and like a lot of those others you kind of have to really search for it in places where elderly people shop to find them. It sort of has a root beer/licorice kind of taste, similar to those root beer barrels you guys had. That said, I love root beer and the root beer barrels but the horehound candy, not so much. I'm guessing none of you would have liked it but then that's the fun of watching you guys seeing how you react to things that aren't as familiar. I will say that a lot of foreign people do think root beer tastes like medicine. I wish we had medicine that tastes like that, I'd be all over it.

Root beer and root beer flavored candy is amazing. Especially Barqs brand root beer. My father made the best root beer floats! Also memories of going with my father to get gas for the truck as a kid and running into the gas station for a root beer and a packet of the circus peanuts. The real stiff ones means it's gone a bit stale but the fresh ones are stick your teeth good. "Old" sweets are SO much better than the hfcs, chemical and additive filled stuff masquerading as candy today.

Your medicine flavors must be way different in Ireland than in the U.S. The only times I have ever heard that root beer flavor tastes like medicine is on the TRY channel. :-) Love me an ice-cold root beer or birch beer soda, especially a root beer float with scoops of vanilla ice cream in the glass.
