I'm convinced there's some sort of genetic component to liking durian, like the gene that makes some people perceive cilantro as soap flavored. This theory is based on an experience I had a few years back with a durian tasting. I bought a pack of mochi at the local Asian market that was filled with durian paste while shopping with a friend. We were both curious and excited to try it. When I opened the package in the parking lot, we both smelled it pungently and immediately, but our reactions were totally opposite. I thought it smelled strongly musky, like overripe melon, with a slightly sulfurous overtone like jackfruit rind, so, strong smelling, but still fruity. She described it like "fermenting dumpster and vomit"; she even dry heaved a little. We both tried one of the mochi. I immediately went in for a second one while she stepped away to dry heave a little more forcefully. As further experimentation, she took two mochi home for her kids to try, and the rest of the pack came home with me. I had to fight my kid for a chance to have any more of them, and between us the pack was gone within minutes of arriving home. Her kids apparently thought they were a cruel joke to ruin the mochi, and puked. After that I'm 100% sure liking or hating it must run in families.

I had durian (the actual fruit) for the first time in China with my in-laws. I had never really heard of it at the time. My wife had warned me that it had a different smell that some people don't like, but other than that I went into it open minded. It wasn't my favorite, but I really liked it. It had a nice custard texture. This was some 20 years or so ago. Since then I've seen a lot of reactions where people really don't like it. Some you can tell really don't. And with that, I agree, there must be some genetic component or something. On the other hand, I wonder how much of it is just people psyching themselves out.

Justine is a legend! 😎 Since the first durian video she's been like a hero in a video game saga, facing challenges that have gotten steadily harder and harder, each boss battle mostly like the last, except more putrid. When I watched the first durian video years ago, I felt a little smug having, myself, fought the battle from the other end, eating real durian fruit in Malaysia and nearly tossing my cookies all for the amusement of my hosts. Now though, I stand in awe, having watched you do the full run, from snacks to drinks to the actual fruit itself. For me, this journey has been like an amputee from a car crash watching someone lose the same limb a little at a time, from a fingernail being pulled out to a hand being lopped off to the whole arm finally being removed in one gob-smacking yank. My hat's off to you, girl. You went the distance. You are my hero. 🤩 Claire and Blaithin, I don't think you were there at the beginning, but you've survived more durian trauma than I ever will and my hat is off to you both as well. And finally Colin,...there's a special place in Heck waiting for you, my friend! Thank you for the amusing videos and kudos to you all! 🤣🤣🤣

@EricHunt2 жыл бұрын
I immediately noticed that as well. The durian videos are always a mixed bag for me. The comedy is quite to my liking but an argument could be made that there's some real cultural disrespect being shown. Bláithín gave by far the most balanced and respectful take on durian from a westerner.
@extendoduck2 жыл бұрын
@@EricHunt But... In the places where it's popular, it's also often banned in public areas. So even in areas where it's eaten commonly, there's enough people who have a visceral reaction to the smell that it's not allowed in confined public spaces. I don't think there's any cultural disrespect going on here. It's an extremely polarizing taste/smell *everywhere.*
@Churchgrimm2 жыл бұрын
@@EricHunt I don't think anything in this particular video was disrespectful, especially considering that Try still included the neutral to somewhat positive reactions in the video, but I do agree that occasionally in Durian videos around the web the sentiment can veer towards "Non-Western foods = bad." In the early 00's I heard an anecdote about a humanitarian aid drop in Afghanistan that strangely has shaped my perspective on many foods from cultures other than my own. Among other foods, peanut butter was included in the aid drop, and those distributing the aid learned not to include it again, as apparently many Afghani people struggled to bring themselves to eat it. Why? Because it looked like actual shit. It's very uncommon to find someone here in the US that dislikes peanut butter, so hearing that someone struggled to eat it was fascinating. Anytime I try a food from another culture and end up disliking it, I often think of that anecdote. I think about how it's perfectly reasonable to dislike something, but someone somewhere deeply loves and values this food. I would want someone to be respectful of me and my culture even if they viscerally disliked a food beloved by us, so I ought to do the same. It's worth noting, though, that even in countries where durian is prevalent and beloved, there's a nuanced relationship with it, and many people who love the taste still hate the smell. People who themselves might happily enjoy it at home might resent someone for boarding the subway with it.
@jimmylin72332 жыл бұрын
@@extendoduck I come from and currently live in one of those places (Taiwan), and you're right, it's polarizing. I've heard of people complaining about their neighbors whacking open a durian fruit. However, I will say that if you can get past the sulfurous odor, it's really quite lovely. Just don't expect it to have any of the characteristics you normally associate with "fresh fruit" other than sweetness.

I first tried Durian in an outdoor fruit market with friends/co-workers in Malysia during an evening out after a long day in a chip factory and after a week of going out for Malaysian lunches at local cafes or food stalls --- so, yes, slightly tired but ready for anything!!! :-) . i remember the first cutting and getting a pod which i admit in the open air was not overpowering --- ok, yes the odor was as strong as s*** but the slightly sweet creaminess of the white fruit was really good and flavorful (i can't give it a comparison). But it was just several bites to eat the one pod and there were enough of us to finish the fruit. I was warned that hotels, including the one i was in, banned durian from being brought in. Would i try it again - yes; would i buy the spiky one (kept in freezers in the local asian market) --- not unless i wanted to get the reaction from my friends very similar to Justine...

Mid 30s Brit, used to live in Malaysia in the 90s as a kid and early teen and I will never forget the durian smell. It doesn't taste as bad as it smells and its surprisingly sweet but the smell...it haunts you...

Try being an actual Malaysian with a mother that loves the bloody thing. Every now and then you go to the kitchen and all you smell it’s a rotting corpse. Or if my mom just recently got it and had it in the car. Smell would be there for at least 2 to 3 days. Kill me. Please.

I've seen reaction videos of Malaysians [and other nationalities where durian is sold[ watching "people try durian for the first time" videos. And they're always kinda horrified. In one video, a guy was shouting, "What are you doing! That's overripe … is practically _spoiled!"_ So apparently, we're not trying durian, but durian that's gone off? I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case. But I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't.

I was a massage therapist for an Asian chiropractor, and some of my patients told me that I should try durian. I got curious, so I bought one at an Asian market. I loved the rich, creamy texture. It's like a custard. It's moderately sweet. I enjoy it now and then.
