I went to a cookout and the hostess knew that Dark N' Stormy made with Goslings was one of my favorite drinks so she offered to make me one. She came back with a HUGE glass filled to the brim. I took one sip and felt it burn a hole all the way to my toes. She looked at me and asked, "oh, is it too strong? I followed the recipe." I didn't want to hurt her feelings so I said, 'no, no, it's good, thank you" About an hour later, her husband asked if I wanted a drink and I held up my half gone Dark N' Stormy and I said that his wife already made me one. He looked sideways at her and asked which bottle she used. It was the 151 proof. She was so apologetic, her husband laughed like hell. 😂

That’s one rum I have not tried😢 but I was curious. I really enjoyed drinking 151 Bacardi when it was still being made, especially when having a tooth issue. But my favorite, sipping rum was Sailor Jerry in the glass type flask container. I stopped drinking it when they went to the plastic flask🤢🤮🤮.

I've BEEN waiting for this video. The Wray & Nephew is what one could call "the every mans rum" in Jamaica. Sold at every bar and every corner shop worth the materials it's made of. If you go anywhere and request rum, they'll automatically pull for that. Older generations used to drink it with just water or Pepsi (because Jamaica is Pepsi country). It pairs well with Ting (grapefruit soda), fruit punch (rum punch for you guys) or even better, sorrel at Christmas. Oh, there was also a Rum & Redbull phase. Used by the older generation to rub on persons who have been caught in the rain (kids included). Like I said, J Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum, the rum for all and for all seasons.

My family is from Jamaica and we would never drink these rums straight. We would fill a bottle cap with rum and add it to a tumbler filled with milk, juice or water (my son might use red bull but I hate red bull).

We used to get scorpion bowls. We would tell the waiter Not to light the 151 on fire, and we would just pour it into the drink. Then the 5 of us would hammer it down, and order mai tais for the rest of the night.

Depending on the rum bars in 🇯🇲you go to, there is always the odd old man who drinks white rum straight, or with a little water, and who will also ask for the hidden bottle of JB. JB could be used to degrease a car engine 😝. Lightweights like me need cranberry juice or Ting with white rum, or ‘whites’ as we call it.🥴

I have a rum story about Ireland, though it was only Malibu … barely rum by comparison. This was 25 years ago or so, and some friends from the US and I had gone to Dublin to visit a friend of ours who was studying there. She taught us the importance of hitting an off license before the club, so I picked up a bottle of Malibu and a coke, which we drank maybe half of while sitting at the feet of some statue. We poured the rest of the Coke into the Malibu bottle and left it against a wall while we hit the clubs. A couple hours later we walked by and some random guy was chugging it, cheered on by his friends. I would have to be dangerously thirsty to grab a bottle I couldn’t see through from against the wall and take a swig from it, but this guy got lucky - only free rum and Coke in there! Happy to give the rest to that brave, foolish soul 😁

Sadly (or not), Bacardi discontinued the 151 a few years ago. While they didn’t give a reason, many people guessed Bacardi was sick and tired of getting sued. Yes, according to court records, a lot of people sued Bacardi because of injuries related to 151 consumption.

@@shuboy05 One very crazy night in the US Navy we took Colt 45 and poured in 151 and shotgunned them. I was hungover and sick for 2 days. To this day I have not a clue how I got home. I do know that I had a very sore jaw as I was very noisy in the barracks and someone helped put me to sleep :) :).

This episode covers both halves of my ancestry! Ah, good old Wray & Nephew. As Aidan found out, your do NOT just neck it. It is for sipping or mixing, and it will make you suffer for just downing it in one go. Fun fact: Back in the day, the factory tour for W&N allowed you to toss a copper penny in the un-distilled version of the rum and watch it dissolve. Far from drinkable, but fun to watch, so I'm told. Unrelated: I rather like Anne's top (jumper, sweater?). It's sparkly and brooding all at once.

They actually discontinued the 151 in 2016, sadly. People were using it for flaming shots, firebreathing and other fire tricks, and they caught a couple lawsuits over people being burned

That Plantation OFTD is something I always have a bottle of sitting in my bar. You are not supposed to drink an overproof rum straight though, they are meant to allow you to make a mixed drink and keep the ABV at a reasonably high level.

The last time I got drunk off white rum I was 16, and the last thing I remember was throwing up into a cardboard litter box while sitting on the toilet, and then waking up the next morning with only my shirt and underwear on (nothing bad happened thankfully, my friends just couldn't get my pants back on.) After many years, decades really, of drinking every possible kind of alcohol in every configuration, these days when I do decide to drink it is rum about 95% of the time. For whatever reason it has all the best possible traits for me: little to no hangover ever, I'm immediately put into a jovial mood and laugh way more than with anything else, a wide variety to cover nearly any taste profile, and the smell is divine. As far as overproof rum goes, meh, I don't really see the reason other than self destruction or teenage antics, lol.
