Im really loving these. I was born in Northern Ireland and live here too but my family is from Galway and I consider myself Irish, not British so I thought Id learn the language and embrace the culture like I should have done all these years. Thank you for helping me to do that.

Thank you for this one! It made me realize just how Irish my mother was, culturally speaking. Although her Irish ancestors came to America several generations before her, she used a lot of these expressions all the time. Now I know they're not just common sayings here; they're really Irish. It's just another thing to strengthen the strong affinity I've always had for this side of my very celtic family tree, and I love it. Thank you!

I was listening so closely! My g-grandmother had two sayings which have come down a couple of generations and, of course, are now unfortunately just gobbledygook! She must have said the same thing often enough for her granddaughters to have formed a memory but no one ever asked her what her sayings meant. I was listening for the rhythm and sounds which might reunite what we have now with such a wise and beautiful language. We do have flaithiúil which she used as a loanword in English. Best wishes.

This is so awesome and such a creative way to teach a language.. I also liked you review of Dualingo where you talked about the present tense .. A good Spanish language book also stressed that learning the Past tense is more logical because more of our everyday conversation is in that tense

I used to be red faced when someone asked to tell him or her a proverb in Irish! What a pity an Irishman does not know even a single Irish proverb! But now thanks to you I am in a better position! I love the song “ Cad e sin don te sin “ and was told that some of the lyrics are in Donegal or Ulster slang or idioms . Being from Donegal is possible you could make that song a video and show which parts are slang vs Gaeilge which would be used everywhere in Ireland ?

I hesitate to ask but in America, the University of Notre Dame always does an Irish Proverb/Blessing. "May the road rise to meet you.......rain fall on fields.. blah blah...." Is that in Gaelic? If so can you do a short lesson on it? Also, what is called Lord's prayer...ar n'Athair. Thanks. Love the channel

My great grandmother taught me "speak of the devil and he shall appear" so we never allowed to say the word devil but divel or beelzebub was OK I guess. Love your channel and work. Grá do chuid oibre.

That's not exactly what the saying meant, you say it when you were talking about someone and then you see them after. Sayings aren't meant to be taken literally.

I like the stick beating someone‘s back one, because it‘s just a factual statement that can be interpreted 2 ways: 1. the victim doesn‘t make a good judge (if the stick shouldn‘t be cut) 2. it takes someone who has suffered injustice to fight back against injustice (if the stick should be cut). Like another Irishman put it, “he who suffered you to impose on him knows you”. Anyways, I think that proverb tells us that revenge is our friend :)

This is amazing, all the subtlety in the proverbs. There was a TV program many, many years ago called Banacek. The main character would end the story with an old Polish saying. “ Even though the sun is shining, the cat still has her kittens under the porch”. I’m still trying to figure that one out.

There are three dialects of irish. This one is Ulster Gaelic and in school in Dublin we did Munster Gaelic. So the pronunciation, some vocab and grammar is different. I find Ulster dialect hard to understand. Sounds like 'kai' for 'caith' where we would say 'ka' etc.
