What a beauty Rua is! My best friend growing up had an Irish Setter for awhile. She was a beautiful dog and in truth it was a shame he ever acquired her. He had no idea how to handle her. She was a very energetic pup and spent most of her time with him chained to a dog house in the back lot of their property. She was so starved for attention that she went delirious with joy whenever a human came near her. It was such a shame. She had all the potential in the world of being an excellent hunter.

The reds seem to be making a comeback. I have a friend who has a red and white pup booked for 2022. I struggle with seeing red dogs in the bog with the rushes. I’m colour blind so when they are on point they disappear 🤣. I have a very good wire haired vizsla who I’ve walked past many the time only to hear the clatter of wings behind me when he pushes the bird up in disgust👍

Great video. Congratulations on the new Puppy Rua. I live in Ireland myself and I am interested in getting started with hunting. Would you have any advice for a beginner on where to start? I have two gundog breed pet dogs which I would be interested in trying to train for hunting also.

My best advice would be to contact your local gun club,enquire in any gunshop and they'll point you in the right direction,best of luck.

Hi George would get back into the setters again? There is snipe on the grass fields at the winter time to run them on.

Hi George, in Limerick myself. What is your opinion on Viszla's? Picking up a pup in the next few weeks and hoping to train him in time for next season. Love the videos. Keep up the great work.
@springerspanielful2 жыл бұрын
I don't have a very positive view of Viszlas as a hunting dog, due to their good looks they have been bred for show for many generations and have largely been denuded of their hunting instinct. In my opinion they are not really suitable for Irish roughshooting conditions.
@ciaranreale24762 жыл бұрын
@@springerspanielful I had one bred with a German pointer before and it was an excellent roughshooting dog. I take your point on the showdog. Certainly an issue with the breed.
@springerspanielful2 жыл бұрын
@@ciaranreale2476 It was most likely the german pointer blood that made it a good roughshooting dog,you may be lucky but I have my doubts,best of luck with your dog and let us know how you get on.

Hi George, nice irish red setter there, what would your opinion on holding field trials for setters and pointers using planted game? , using pigeons or partridges. Each brace of dogs ran would have an opportunity to meet game. I know this is far from the ideal of hunting wild game such as grouse and snipe. But unfortunately game has gone very scarce in some parts of ireland to train setters on. Can setter and pointer trials and training evolve to this?
@springerspanielful Жыл бұрын
I remember fantastic trials on pheasants in sugar beet some years ago,and there are still snipe trials held on some of the bigger bogs,however I think what you describe is the future,one would need to be seriously committed to participate as you described.Not for me I don't think.
@macrolly23 Жыл бұрын
@@springerspanielful yes it would take different training for the setters to quater and behave right using planted game. It would be hard for the trial fraternity to adapt to this. I read in Leon mortensen s book from new Zealand that they ran setter and pointer trials on pigeons in bird launchers new Zealand. 🇳🇿
@macrolly23 Жыл бұрын
Something has to be done as game is getting scarcer as the years go on.

@@macrolly23 correct some great potential grouse moors in Ireland but there not being managed enough and the Irish red grouse nearly extinct its a shame.
@macrolly23 Жыл бұрын
@@Ronny.81 yes the mountains here have great potential here in Ireland, however the hunting and access rights are mostly a free for all, so this will prevent grouse getting plentiful enough to be a viable game bird. However if gun club's set up release pens and feeders on the mountains maybe red partridge could be an option.

Why do you teach your Red setter to pattern like a springer/flusher? What is that whistle for? They are not supposed to pattern. They are supposed to use their brains to hunt bird-likely objectives. Flushers pattern because they have to flush to the gun....unlike pointing breeds.
@springerspanielful2 жыл бұрын
Evidently you know little about setters and how they are best utilised..
@shug27952 жыл бұрын
@@springerspanielful OK...but that doesn't excuse the incorrect application of the dog in your video. What a waist of a nice dog. Wait...I get it now...your dog doesn't hold point so you have him quartering. It's more of a flointer, than a pointer.
@springerspanielful2 жыл бұрын
@@shug2795 The dog holds point just fine, you are very quick to criticise what you obviously don't understand.
@shug27952 жыл бұрын
@@springerspanielful This isn't brain surgery. You own a "pointing breed". POINTING...not sure how else to say this? You don't "pattern a pointing breed, unless your previous dog was a springer. Some folk simply don't understand the fundamental difference between the application of a flusher versus a pointing dog. Irish/red setters are pointers, not flushers. That dog needs rehabilitated.
