I make soda bread quite often and do as you say. I enrich the dough with an egg and butter, then add raisins and a bit of candied peel. Delicious!

Great video. I wish you said what could be used in place of butter milk because in Ontario Canada since the COVID pandemic they all changed the recipe for buttermilk and it tastes like a dirty dish rag. Could I use sour cream?

I've seen from other videos that one could use whole milk with about 1/2tsp of vinegar to substitute for buttermilk, but still others just call for plain whole milk instead of buttermilk altogether.

It becomes American fruit soda bread when you add fruit. It was something that happened after the Irish emigrated to the US and then it came back just like Halloween 😂. I add sultanas myself.

I dont know how u guys work this kind of sticky dough i tried this & kneading it no way it just ended up all over my hands no matter what i did (inc wetting my hands covering them with flour) nothing works i end up adding more flour or discarding it to the recycle iv tried every hack on you tube with these kinds of dough still no success to your i added about another 1/2 cup of flour to get anywhere near workable have you any suggestions

@@garyash4823 I’d recommend aiming for the consistency of the dough in the video. Hold a drop of buttermilk back. Plenty of flour on the table and shape round like in the video ☘️

😂 me too and I feel you. I put together all the exact amount as stated. Then realised it was too watery, eventually threw all away. Well I am not giving up , will try again with lesser buttermilk. 😊
