We see every main character shed tears in Avatar, but iroh is one of the only to shed tears when no one is around to help him, the one who helps everyone he meets. I think that’s one of the most important things about Avatar, it shows that even the strongest characters can break down at their lowest. Something we can all live by.
@I_am_a_cat_3 жыл бұрын
I think he chose to not let anyone see him sad, because it would have made his "job" of helping everyone else that much harder. They'd be focusing on him, and he wants them to focus on themselves. @vib21193 жыл бұрын
To me, it seems like he does this not because he thinks other people shouldnt fuss over his problems, I think Iroh is far too wise a person to have that kind of self-hateful(in my eyes) view of his problems, but for this particular problem, he doesn't want them to make a fuss over it because they cant really help him, how can anyone (except Iroh himself) help him overcome this regret and grief? Zuko treats him as a father, many other look up to him as a father figure or an extremely wise person, but that won't make the regrets and grief go away. More than that, I think he has overcome his regret and grief but on this day, to not shed tears for his son would very disrespectful and so he wanted to be vulnerable to his regrets and grief, on this day. And I think it's just another one of his strengths, to be at a stage where you are so familiar and in touch with your emotions, that you can choose when and when to not react to your emotions, but not go down a slippery sloop of either never reacting to emotions or always reacting to emotions.

So it was brought to my attention that Iroh’s Tale is a day of him reliving fatherhood. When it begins he comforts a toddler boy who was crying, as a father would. Then he watches a bunch of preteen boys play ball and then tries to teach them to be honorable and admit their mistake when the ball crashes through someone’s window, as a father would. Then he humbled the young man who tried to mug him, taught him about taking a strong stance and encouraged him to follow his dreams, as a father would. So he basically got to relive being a father on his son’s birthday, helping all those young men. Which makes the line, “Happy birthday my son…if only I could’ve helped you…” hit so much harder.

We all need a father figure in our lives-the feeling of security and peace that comes from the protection and provision of the family’s leader. I cried the first time I watched this scene when I was young, and it still tugs at my heartstrings whenever I see it. At first, I didn’t know why. I thought it was just because the scene was so sad, and I felt sorry for Uncle Iroh, plus the thought of his “brave soldier boy” not coming home alive… the lyrics were just brilliant! But now that I’m older, this scene has become more meaningful and layered for me. Two broken souls found hope and healing in each other’s company-one who lost his dearest son, and the other who never had a proper dad. What a great show. I am so grateful to have lived during the time when this masterpiece was created. It has truly become a part of my life, and I hope that future generations will watch it too!

This must be one of the best scenes in the show. And one of the deepest, if not The Deepest. Even compared to love- friends- and other plots. Successful warlord in the past, who lost his son, and didn't jump into rage and violence, but became the wisest and most humble man in the world. And the strongest for me. people say that mother's love is the strongest. But the Father, who lost his son during he war, that he led at that time... That's epic.

emilio monsen, that the voice actor of Iroh, Mako Iwamatsu was dying of esophageal cancer and this was the last episode he ever recorded. Hence the, “In honor of Mako” in the end. It’s really sad. Another fact is that the picture illustrating Irohs son is actually an illustration of Mako when he was younger. R.I.P Mako

It hurts even more when you find out when Mako Iwamatsu recorded this scene, those emotions were real. Him crying mid recording knowing this would be the last thing he’d record before his passing makes this scene even more sadder than intended.

@KlazeGamez No.. Mako voiced every episode of book 2, he died during production of book 3, and he definitely sung this song. In fact his replacement, Greg Baldwin, said he will never sing the song because "It’s Mako’s song".

@@jakehildebrand1824 nah you're correct. His son died just after he breached the outer wall. Resulting in Iroh withdrawing from the front lines. Greg Baldwin told a story in one of his panels about the first time he met Mako’s Daughter and grandson who was also named Mako. It was his first time ever recording for the role after Mako’s passing and they wanted to sit in for the recording. Greg was super nervous bc he wasn’t sure if he would do the voice well enough or that Mako’s daughter would even like it. As they were listening, Mako’s daughter leaned back and closed her eyes. After the recording, Mako’s daughter thanked Greg and said he did the voice so well, that she able to hear her father’s voice and feel as though he was in the room for a moment That story made me cry
