I was fortunate enough to meet Doug Ingle after an IB show in 1987 or 88. I still have his autograph tucked away in the gatefold of my Ball LP. The thing I was most amazed by was learning that his vocals were not processed - his normal speaking voice also had that cathedral-like, slightly unearthly Butterfly quality to it. Nice fellow. RIP, Doug Ingle.

I saw IB in 1970. They played in a gadda da vida, had a 45 min drum solo by Ron Bushy. It was awesome. The. Blues Image opened for them. They were tremendous. I was hawking sodas to the crowds.

I toured with Iron Butterfly as a roadie and we were doing all kinds of dope all the time! Inna Goda da Vida is an out of body experience!

What a great performance by master musicians. The sorry thing is they're all gone now.

Now I know why this was posted when it was, but this performance was on my 14th birthday. Cheers to the band.

I noticed a full version of it wasn't on here, so in tribute to Doug Ingle and the rest of the guys, I decided to put this on here in its best possible quality.

So glad to see this back up on KZbin! Ingle's second solo, 6:01+, is so, so good -- nothing else like it from that time.

This is an absolute killer version, their performance is way better than Led Zeppelin's from the same show.

Eric Braunn just reminds me of Nigel Tufnel here :-)

Honestly, Eric almost kills this. Fist off his guitar is way to loud, you can barely hear the organ for the first 3 minutes. Secondly it sounds like sh*t, not sure what make this is (Ibanez?) but it's just 80's bad and doesn't fit. Thirdly, what in the hell is he wearing?

I was really surprised to see Eric here. To me, he looks like Eric Ramone. LOL...Joking aside, I have always admired Eric Braunn's guitar playing. 🎸

@@rockinronist Funnily enough, they both played Mosrite guitars (Johnny got his for dirt-cheap in the '70s, since no-one wanted them anymore), so the comparison is fitting.

🎉 What a ride!!! 🎉 Just a good, if not better, than the original recording of the late 60s.

The original album version itself was, essentially, live in the studio...one full take that was just a soundcheck and a run-through. They were suggested to use it as it was, and all they did was double-track the vocals, and "punch in" the first guitar solo.

I saw them with Savoy Brown around the same time of this performance in Detroit. Great night I’ll never forget.

Some excellent performances at the Atlantic 40th. Mixes are crap, though. My guess is miking and leveling everything properly was impossible with one band after the other taking the stage.

That, and most likely having an "instant" sound mix overall for the HBO presentation.

It was Atlantic Records' 40th Anniversary. Last year was their 75th anniversary, which came and went...it doesn't surprise me they haven't done anything like this since 1988.

@Esotereclectic Nah. Atlantic's monster output ended in 1990 or so. Know what you mean, though. The live show circuit these days is a GD mess. The 75 series reissues are nice though. Recs are CSN couch album, Billy Cobham's Spectrum and Yes Fragile. Forget the Zep 4, though...it's weak - low volume.
