For me, Somewhere and Seventh are the creative peak and the complexity peak well balanced. My favorite albums of this band. And why we have a song about Alexander the Great? Because he was an epic historic character that it is a timeless model of a conqueror in an album about time

Maiden has many faces; depending on how you listen to them; vocalist eras, drumming eras, guitarist eras, recording studio eras… to me, the biggest factor is Martin Birch. Killers to Fear of the dark is Maidens top era because of him; peaking at Seventh Son. Edit; and yes, watched it all.

Just now getting around to this one after catching y’alls Judas Priest review, another great discussion. My Top 5: 1) Somewhere In Time 2) Killers 3) Seventh Son of a Seventh Son 4) Iron Maiden 5) Powerslave Runner Ups: Brave New World and The X Factor and The Number of the Beast. I love Maiden’s synth albums, I think the synths gave those albums more scope and atmosphere. And by contrast, the Di’Anno albums have a grounded street grit from the lyrics, lo-fi production, Clive Burr’s drumming and Di’Anno’s singing persona.

Great video guys. Really enjoyed this. Piece Of Mind is also my favorite. Their most "complete" record for me and Revelations is my favorite Maiden song period. The production for me is what elevates it above their other great records. The mix for me is just perfection. The analysis of X Factor I think was spot on too. There seems to be that same concensus that there's a much higher appreciation for that record now than there was at the time it was released. It's a great record and I'd definitely put it in my upper half. Dance Of Death is my favorite album since Bruce and Adrian returned which seems like an unpopular opinion. I think for me and being a guitarist I really enjoy the lead work on Dance Of Death. I love how there's trade off solos all over the place on that record. Just a really fun record for me and also the last tour I saw them on. Interestingly the analysis of possible leftover songs or ideas from previous albums is exactly what happened with Brave New World. I know Blood Brothers, The Merceneray and Dream Of Mirrors in particular were leftover ideas from the Virtual XI sessions and I can definitely detect some of Blaze's influence on BNW. BNW was the first live show I ever saw and it was an amazing night. Saw them at the MEN arena in Manchester England. Halford was the support act that night. Great show!

To answer your question at the end, I watched the whole thing. My friend and I are both listening through the whole discography (I've been a fan for a few years now, she hasn't heard a lot of them before this and a concert we went to last year). We're both working in secret on tier lists for the albums and going to share them with each other later. I've basically been listening to only maiden the last month or so and unfortunately I don't know many people who listen to metal to discuss things like this with, so watching a video like this is fun to finally hear peoples' thoughts. And the stories that go along with listening to them to, which unfortunately I don't have many yet. My opinions are the most similar to Darth's. My favorite albums are Seventh Son, NotB, Powerslave, and AMOLAD. The thing I disagree the most with are I don't like SiT very much, idk I've given it a shot many times. And I think NPftD is a lot better than people give it credit for, it's like the fast food version of Iron Maiden, it's not their best music in the world but, it still goes really hard imo. I think it just catches a lot of unfair stray bullets for being worse than their amazing run right before it.

That’s exactly why I always choose the debut album as my number. Mum discovered maiden in London before they were famous and had the first two albums, but stopped once Bruce came into the band. I got her back into maiden when I started listening to NOTB and POM etc. anyway haha when I first heard the debut I was honestly blown away. At the age of 14 it was just the heaviest and most technical thing I’d ever heard. 15 years later and it’s still in my top 3 albums of all time 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 Also: the first tour with the ed force one plane was 2008/2009 Somewhere back in time world tour. I saw the plane at an airport and nearly died 😂😂

@@suprchickn7745 hell, even deja vu: "feels like i've been here before, feels like i've been here before, . . . " that's 3 songs from somewhere in time. one time my cousin brought up he didn't like the blayze bailey stuff because of the repetitive choruses, and i pointed out they had been doing it before then, and he conceded the point. i think it's more noticeable to someone if they don't like the song, but maiden loves the repetitive choruses.

How can you rate Fear of the Dark lower than No Prayer for the Dying? Especially after you mentioned No Prayer for the Dying is their worst album...? A sentiment I agree with btw, and actually rate it lower than a 6. How much lower is hard to say as I still love Maiden so much but like a 4 or 5 is where I rate it. Fun fact, Fear of the Dark was the first Iron Maiden album I ever bought and while I certainly liked it I acknowledge it's far from their best. Still, far from their worst too, I personally think it's a 7, so much closer to your 7.5 than 6/3(without the titular track). I also remember the first time I heard The X Factor and Virtual XI and was like 'WTF, this isn't Maiden'. I mean I wasn't really following metal news or anything at that point so I had no idea Bruce Dickinson left the band due to his throat cancer and all that. Even today that I know the whole story I still don't really register those 2 albums as Maiden albums. I don't know what it is exactly, as I did very much register the Di Anno albums as Maiden albums(listening to them after Fear of the Dark and Powerslave) but never the Blaze albums for whatever reason. I guess I should give those 2 albums a shot now that I'm a much bigger metal head than I was back than and now that I've listened to dozens of different metal bands across all its different subgenres. Maybe it's my fascination with all sorts of metal subgenres but I really don't mind Maiden's longer songs, in fact I tend to like them more than the super short ones. I feel that Dance of Death is Bruce Dickinson at his best when it comes to story telling. Dance of Death and Passchendaele are 2 of Bruce's best story songs, along with Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner which makes sense given it's a poem.

My two favorite Maiden albums are Piece of Mind and Somewhere in Time. Both are solid all the way through and definitive. Powerslave and NOTB are a close 2nd.

Sure. Everytime I listen to a Maiden album I think it's my favorite, because they are the best band in the world. To me. But I like your picks, Piece Of Mind being my first and probably dearest to me of them all.

Even though Piece of Mind and Powerslave are legendary albums, I actually think Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son are much more consistent. Apart from Heaven Can Wait, I really love every track on those albums.

Iron Maiden is unbeatable. In my opinion, no other band compares. I was introduced to Maiden 30 years ago after hearing Metallica, Megadeth, Judas Priest and a few others. I heard Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and that was it. I was infatuated with the band. I liked Judas Priest as well, especially the Metalworks compilation and Painkiller. But... I still listen to Maiden daily.

great review, watched every minute. but focused only on Bruce joining the band, leaving the band, returning to the band. no mention of Adrian leaving the band......Janick joining the band, Adrian returning to the band. Smith is one hell of guitarist. great job tho guys, loved it. UP THE IRONS \m/

Fun fact Blaze helped write quire a bit of the songs on brave new world and they were worked on during virtual xi recording, blood brothers could have been on virtual but it wasn't finished in time, he should have some writing credits on BNW, his solo acoustic version of blood brothers is awesome.

Matter of life and death is a solid 9 for me. And i totally buy your comment about the fact that this is an album experience. Songs seperated like Brighter.. longest day... or especially Lord of light are amazing on their own... But when they are amongst the other tracks, they make the sum a masterpiece to me. My only down side is The pilgrim. I found it to be the weakest closing track for maiden. But not a bad song though.

I think it says alot for Maiden having seen so many of these rankings that so many people rank them differently... Says alot about the quality of the albums they have put out! Anyway my personal rankings: 1) Number of the Beast 2) Powerslave 3) Seventh Son 4) Somewhere in Time 5) Iron Maiden 6) Piece of Mind 7) Brave New World 8) A Matter of LAD 9) Dance of Death 10) Killers 11) Book of Souls 12) Fear of the Dark 13) Final Frontier 14) X Factor 15) Virtual XI 16) No Prayer Oh and the above is subject to change!

I contest in the strongest possible terms that the era of repetitive choruses began with Brave New World...Running Free...Wrathchild...Run To The Hills...The Number of The Beast...Deja-Vu...The Angel & The Gambler...ok there may have been less, but they've always been lurking about!

Yo Dude, mad props and all but only 1 album tops BNW in the repeated lyrical phrases camp, and thats Virtual XI. The s/t debut and classic era arn't even close...

@@MetalbyteMedia Utmost respect for you - but we must be listening to different bands! I should note that it isn't by any means a criticism on my part, (of either the band or your ratings) but I do think that people often view the earlier material through rose tinted glasses and overlook the obvious flaws on the grounds that it was, quite simply, setting the boundaries. These days it mostly plays within them (although if the inside buzz about Senjutsu is to be believed that may be about to change). I have been a hardcore fan since '86 but I fail to see how dreaming in black and white or showing no fear is any different to feeling like I've been there before or running free...

If Eternity Should Fail was originally written by Bruce for a new solo album that was to be a follow up to Chemical Wedding hence the narrative parts, Steve liked it and thought it fitted the theme of the album so asked if he could pinch it, Bruce agreed and said it would be rewritten and changed for his Album though no news of a new solo album has come out yet.

Regarding RDO's view that older metal fans like beginnings, I'm 50 and I thought their most recent album, Book of Souls, was sick. I'm eagerly awaiting Senjutsu too, so there are a few of us _old timers_ that are still forward thinking. To his point though, I think a lot of people's musical favorites are based on the age they were when they first discovered a band/artist, etc. To me Powerslave is their greatest album but that was also the first one I heard so the imprint was strongest.

Just finished it up tonight. Watched the whole video, albeit piecemeal over the course of two weeks or so by breaking it up into 20 minute "episodes". You guys should do more of these band discography vids. Very enjoyable. Bang on.

I have an equal appreciate of current and classic Maiden. My top few (going with 6 because it best illustrates the above comment) are Seventh Son of a Seventh Son Book of Souls Powerslave Brave New World A Matter of Life and Death The Number of the Beast The bottom three tend to move around amongst each other, but the top three are pretty consistent. Love the band, can't wait for Senjutsu.

I enjoyed this discussion. Up until recently, I was someone who listened to the first five Dickensen albums like crazy and the Di'Anno ones occasionally. When No Prayer for the Dying came out, I was not impressed and stopped following them. Other than hearing a song or two off of Fear of the Dark and one off Virtual X, they completely fell off my radar. I fell away from traditional metal during that period other than Black Sabbath, so I probably could give those albums another listen. I recently decided to check out the Maiden reunion era albums. I'm still getting to know them, but I'm having a great time. I love epics like Nomad, The Parchment, Book of Souls, and The Red and the Black. These albums are still too new to me to rank. I like that they are exploring fresh creative territory when they could have gotten away with regurgitating the old sound as a nostalgia act. People complain about too much repetition, but I like that jammy quality. Not everything has to be concise. At least that's my opinion. It also doesn't hurt that I have a 70 mile commute to work and these albums will take me through the entire ride. Definitely car trip music and long walk music. With the classic period albums I go Seventh Son of a Seventh Son: 10, The Number of the Best: 9.75, Somewhere in Time: 9.75, Powerslave: 9, Piece of Mind: 8.5, Iron Maiden: 7.5, Killers: 7.

Since writing my comment, I've immersed myself in the reunion material and the nineties albums. I'm glad I'm exploring this stuff because there's something about every Maiden album that I enjoy. Some of the reunion albums now rank pretty high for me with A Matter of Life and Death and Senjutsu cracking my top five. Getting into the post classic era albums has been a terrific experience. Eighties Maiden is amazing, but so are other periods. What a catalogue!
