It inspired a great video game too. Powerslave (Exhumed outside of US) stands as one of my favourite FPS games of all time. Was overlooked at the time because the definitive version was on the Sega Saturn (PlayStation port was bad and I never played the PC version but I understand it wasn't very good either). I honestly rate it higher than Duke Nukem 3D - if you can still stand playing clunky old shooters I can't recommend it enough, even low end PCs can emulate Saturn now, give it a go.
@MrPeabody674 жыл бұрын
@ On the Clive/Nicko controversy, there's alot of discussion surrounding Clive's ability to keep up with the massive tour schedule. Even Steve has said he thought Clive was the best drummer he's ever played with. Nearly every member of Maiden has said that Clive had the better technique and feel. BUT, they also considered Nicko the better drummer when it came to touring. Unless Razor is right about Nicko playing backroom politics, I think Clive's ability to sustain a long tour was the main reason for his sacking. If you're looking evidence: Clive got fired after a huge American tour.
@MrPeabody674 жыл бұрын
@ Disclaimer: I consider Clive the better drummer. My point is that I don't think people have considered the physical demands of Clive's technique. Imagine trying to keep that during the tours IM was doing at that time. Nicko is clearly the inferior drummer, but his style is super energy efficient. Nicko probably had no problem showing up every night.

@@yourfairyking It's called being wrong. He puts/ says many things in here that are WRONG. Fact. For example, the clip of bruce "bashing the fans." That wasn't from 1988, it's from the early 90's when he left band. It had nothing to do with 7th son. That part of the video is WRONG. The thing about nicko being better than clive. You can like whoever you want, but to say "nicko knows one beat" is WRONG. Drummers from the 80's used to stand behind him to watch how he played. Look at Rime of the Ancient Mariner or Where Eagles Dare. And finally, to his comments on Number of the Beast. This is the most WRONG thing he said in the entire video. Again, you can like what you like, and think it's overrated. But saying "Number of the Beast just isn't that good" or "it's full of filler" or "people wouldn't like it if it weren't for the music videos." This is all WRONG. Number of the beast has some of the biggest hits in all of traditional metal, regardless of the videos. And if he claims the prisoner is filler, then so is 22 acacia avenue. I'm not a big fan of prog rock in general... but always liked the 7th Son album. By 1988, Maiden had already been enraptured with the smell of their own farts for at least the Powerslave and Somewhere the Time Albums. Repetitive chorus in the title track from 7th Son is simply too much?? But somehow the same exact treatment in the title track to Powerslave or the ponderous, plodding indulgence of Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner or the never ending run on and on run on and on run on and on from The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner are somehow parts of untouchable classic albums? Fuckin lol. If we're really going to open the pandora's box of "too long and proggy and bloated", well the last 6 to 8 minute long Maiden epic that ever justified it's running time was To Tame A Land from fuckin 1983. Every Maiden epic since then has been at least a 50/50 split between inspiration and meandering mess... and this is coming from an old man who first saw them in concert almost 30 years ago. I love em to death, especially their 1980-1992 output... but goddamn the band has been fond of prog wankery for nearly their entire career. It takes some bizzarro mental gymnastics to throw shade on the prog tendencies of these two tracks from that album but not those two tracks from that one. It's absurd on it's face.

@jayhood19735 жыл бұрын
This is undoubtedly true. At least so far as is plainly obvious without the benefit of getting to witness an alternate universe progression wherein Dianno stayed on. Bruce's level of ambition as a person simply overshoots Paul's (and most other humans for that matter) by a clear mile, and that reflects on maidens career. Especially the touring aspect, for reasons that should be crystal clear to even the most staunchly biased Dianno supporters. To pick and choose a single clip of now/then to bolster the claim that Dianno was the superior frontman does little but showcase some extreme bias, and cannot be taken seriously by anyone with even the foggiest of critical thinking abilities. I'm pretty sure Dianno never performed across hemispheres ones day to the next, to say nothing of the sheer differences in the amount of shows each perform. I've seen Bruce at shows where he was off, of course, (last time around for instance for Souls in Ct, US... Where he was obviously sick), and other shows (AMOLAD- again in CT) where he was stunningly dead on, highs and all. Bruce came up with a way in which to get the band to play in places far more efficiently, vastly expanding their touring range and delivering the Maiden experience to people in cities that would otherwise be so impractical as to never get the chance. Dianno, on the other hand, couldn't hack it after a couple tours. Sorry, but Thems. The. Facts. Hey, I don't have anything bad to say about Paul, I've been around a long time and was there to enjoy the early stuff, starting with NotB. After powerslave, I went back and listened to the first two. At first, I didn't like the vocals near as much, but I kept listening, trying to soften my bias in order to enjoy his style for what it was. And it paid off big-time...I really love that stuff every bit as much as the Bruce era material. That's the same approach that allows me to immensely enjoy the later material as well. I'm sure I'm in the minority when I say I think FF is a stunning work of art, just as enjoyable as powerslave ever was (Bruces crooning of "Westward the tides" is just plain good for the soul, at least to me).
@spartansquid59315 жыл бұрын

To be fair, it was true when Bruce said so in 1985 regarding their own albums up to that point. I mean can you imagine Aces High, The Prisoner or The Trooper with synthesizers? Me neither. But then their style changed quite dramatically with Somewhere In Time and then a step further with 7th Son. All of the sudden synthesizers became a valid option, because it really fit their new more grand, epic and dramatic sound. It didn't however fit the earlier more straight to the point, classic balls to the wall sound and songwriting.

@Kaucukovnik6667 жыл бұрын
Razor has to keep his edge. Half the mythos filled with "good", "okay" and "meh" would be way less interesting than jumping between opposing superlatives all the time. Also likes to pick less known precursors to popular things and bitch about plagiarism all the time. To his credit, he isn't a contrarian just for the heck of it. But whenever he finds himself in slight disagreement with the general opinion, he tends to ramp it all the way up. Definitely better than fanboyish "8 out of 10 is the lowest my favorite band has ever sank." The man has his opinions and isn't afraid to word them strongly, and that is becoming increasingly rare.
@myaramiu5 жыл бұрын
@Lassi Kinnunen Yeah I also think this is one of their least filler albums with Dickenson, and yet he slams it as being filler fuel. Invaders, Children of the Damned, The Prisoner? Those were all concert staples for a while. He complains and argues that they're metal-pop ballads and yet then praises Run to the Hills, which is exactly the same thing he just bashed 2 other songs for. He contradicts himself on a few albums and it's kind of annoying because he makes it seems like it's justifiable to hate certain things for the point of hating them in the video. While I personally think Powerslave is the best Maiden record released to humanity, I don't think Number of the Beast is overrated by any means, or is a lackluster album. In fact, I think that whole description can be applied to Killers. Iron Maiden was a brilliant album, but Killers seemed like more of the same with only 2 or 3 really standout songs on it. The rest of that album is really forgettable and droning, with some songs running together with how unintuitive they were.

I appreciate the honesty you don't always get from people in the media. I do disagree with a couple things. I like The Prisoner off of NOTB. Clive on the drums and both Dave & Adrian's solos are great when they play it live. I know Gangland's filler. I saw an interview with Adrian. He said it was a rare day he and Clive were the only ones in the studio and Clive told him to, "come up with something over this drum beat." So he riffed over it. They came up with it right there. It was only Adrian's second album with the band and Bruce's first so it was raw. But like you mentioned, Clive was great on it and like you, I don't like what they did to him, shameless sacking and bringing in Nicko. As far as Bruce tearing up the fan's "Play the Classics" sign, I laughed and thought of what Lemmy said about Bruce, "Well, they don't call him Dick Brucison for nothing!" LOL!! It's like you can still hear Lemmy's voice from beyond the grave. :)

Guadalupe Torres Well take into consideration that Maiden were touring a lot more and harder than Paul, so Bruce easily could have just been worn out from time to time because he was using his voice to such a high degree every night. I don't think Paul had all that going on to wear out his voice. That's just how it goes down. Even Freddie Mercury occasionally blew out his voice, and Robert Plant notoriously did so after Led Zeppelin IV to which he would never sound the same again.
