Iron Maiden really isn't brilliantly produced. I remember seeing Steve saying that he'd have loved to have Martin Birch produce it but they were too scared to approach him and Martin saying that when he heard it he loved it and even before being asked to do Killers wished they'd approached him to produce it.

THIS ONE, the one that called me, that day in 1980. 13 year old me saw that cover in a record store and it was like a moth to a flame. I had to get it immediately even though I had never heard of the band before. Mom and Dad thought the cover was repulsive but I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Thank God the music inside was nothing like I ever heard before and I've been listening ever since.

Personally, I've only done a thorough A-B-C on "Number Of The Beast" but don't think there's any doubt that the '98 mixes are brighter (and definitely louder) The 2015's, to my ears at least, are a sort of halfway house between the original '82 and the '98.

I highly recommend u check out the Iron Maiden short concert video 'Live at the Rainbow'... it was filmed in London in late 1980 just after guitarist Adrian Smith had replaced Dennis Stratton (who played on the first Maiden album) and featured Paul Di'Anno on vocals and (the late) Clive Burr on drums w/ Steve Harris (bass) and Dave Murray (guitar). 6 songs in that video (4 from this album - 'Remember tomorrow'... 'Phantom of the Opera'... 'Transylvania'... and 'Iron Maiden') and 2 songs from the 2nd album 'Killers' ('Wrathchild'... and 'Killers')... It captured the majesty of early Iron Maiden.

Although it is a good, raw version of it, I have to disagree. During the build up before the guitar solo, it is plainly obvious that one of the guitars is vastly out of tune. Perhaps that's what they wanted to go back and rectify before the multi tracks were erased. Album version is the one for me.

@@GilesArt Lol. The album version is the first version I heard, so I naturally biased. I do own an original Soundhouse Tapes, and I do prefer the version of "Iron Maiden" that's on there to the album one, but "Prowler" has that horrid out of tune bit which spoils it for me. Otherwise it's a cracking version.

@@jonnydavies6968 Well, that's a very nice response considering I gave you such a bellendish reply. So however the discussion goes, you've got the moral victory. LOL. I actually heard the soundhouse tapes version many many years after I heard the album one, but then again, I generally favour demo's for their roughness and unpolished qualities. Don't get me wrong, it can sometimes go horribly (like when you get drums up too high or too low!) but I think ultimately, the Soundhouse version is the closest to feeling live in their early days, which I would have loved to have been around for. - L:ive albums typically never capture what they're supposed to, in my opinion - given all the mixing they go through!

Kira, elbower of plantlife, takes me back 42 year to a time when the NWoBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) was at its peak, and my friends and me were right in the middle of it all at the 1980 UK Reading Rock Festival (which coincidentally also had a small band called Samson on the bill. The latter had an unknown singer named "Bruce Bruce", a young Bruce Dickinson sporting a full beard and a bit of an attitude. Later he lost both, luckily). Funny you had a toss-up between two albums that helped shape (or re-shape) the musical landscape in their era. 1970's Deep Purple In Rock was a pivotal album that showed the way to Hard Rock-dom and Iron Maiden did the same for Heavy Metal in 1980 and the album became a beacon that lighted how things needed to be done. Iron Maiden (the band) have the distinction to have done it twice, the second time with 1982's "The Number Of The Beast". Hugs and warm greetings from Belgium.

My fav Maiden album is Seventh Son, it's a very heavy concept album, if you ever get round to reacting to the full album maybe have a quick look up about the whole concept of it so you get the lyrics more through the journeys concept(based on a novel i believe). You may not gel with it though as i recall you're were a bit lukewarm to Bruce's vocals.
