This makes me kinda sad that iron maiden never used Adrian Smith's voice in their main songs. Him and Bruce make a great team.

The 1986 was Adrian Smith's year. He wrote by himself 3 of 8 songs on "Somewhere in Time" album (in that way, after Steve Harris, he became the most profitable song-writer in Maiden history), which 2 of them became singles with his own solos (as far as I remember, solos in Maiden's songs were played always by duet Smith-Murray or only by Murray (like in "Run to the Hills)). And also his lead vocals on "Reach Out" from Wasted Years B-Side. Greatest time for Adrian as a musician.

Yeah and its why he left after seventh son. He thought he could do it in his own. That was a huge mistake, but it did result years later with two great albums with Bruce , accident at Birth and Chemical Wedding.

It seems like Adrian Smith's profile in the band was really being pushed during this period. The Somewhere In Time album featured three songs written solely by Adrian - this being significant because they are the first and only songs written solely by him - two of them being the albums singles, with "Wasted Years" being one of the bands most popular songs. He is also credited with backing vocals on the initial pressings of the album, most notably on "Wasted Years." "Reach Out" is the only lead vocal Adrian has recorded with Iron Maiden, and was featured as the "B" side of the "Wasted Years" single. Adrian also contributed two other songs that, although written by other people that he was doing a side project with, were recorded by Iron Maiden and used as "B" sides ("That Girl" and "Juanita"). Adrian could have been the lead vocalist in any other band, but when you have Bruce Dickinson, Maiden had that spot covered.
@kili1985
@kili1985 8 жыл бұрын
+t. joseph cravens Adrian has not been pushed, he just came up with extremely good songs, his material always had some serious quality. Bruce was kind of exhausted after the World Slavery Tour and his musical ideas were not good enough, so it simply was Adrians turn on SIT. Also I'm convinced that he was the one to chose or craft the guitar tone on this album, he was even mixing it down with Martin Birch, thats why this album sounds so great.

He looks even more like Phil Collin, who they were looking to when they fired Stratton, but decided on Adrian. Furthermore, Adrian is a better singer than Joe Elliot, his voice is sort of Vince Neil bad...

From what I remember, this is a Adrian Smith song, that he wrote when he left Iron Maiden and formed A.S.A.P., it was he's first single. I believe it stood for Adrian Smith and Project? He had Bruce sing backing vocals on a couple of songs. And Adrian also played guitar on Bruce's solo project, especially on Accident of Birth album. Maiden, adopted this song, but never played it live from what I've understood. Still, one of my favorite Smith/Maiden songs, its certainly a departure from Maidens songs.

Of course I have!!! It is a lovely song as well but I personally like Reach Out better. I've actually heard most of Maiden's library of songs. I may not remember them all by name but I have at least heard them once. Another really cool song is Twilight Zone. I love the intro Riff!

Iron Maiden has TONS of songs that are b-sides but aren't on albums. This is something we don't have to argue about. Just look at the track list of the album yourself: www.amazon.com/Somewhere-Time-1998-Remastered-Version/dp/B01K33CFCE/ref=ice_ac_b_dpb?ie=UTF8&qid=1496690764&sr=8-1&keywords=iron+maiden+somewhere+in+time

Imagine what it would have been like if Steve had been more open-minded in the late '80's and the '90's. I really missed Adrian, then Bruce left as well. Tragedy. It was so good that they got together again in 2000.

We would have got another 3 mastterpieces of albums after 7 son.All 3 of them were songwriting at their best and also Adrian wanted to carry on with the same level of Progression, but Steve wanted to strip down - so Adrian and then Bruce left within consecutive albums. Then a few albums later, they start writing more progressively again, but they were not in their prime songwriting any more!

Text from Iron Maiden's 'Best of the B sides' booklet: This song was written by a good friend of Adrian's and now Bad Company guitarist Dave 'Bucket' Colwell. Done originally in the 'Entire Population of Hackney' project which later developed into ASAP. Steve suggested we do it after hearing a 'Hackneys' live tape. An unlikely Maiden track.
