Completely agree with that! The debut is ground-breaking; I love every song of it, Paul's vocals and the non-polished production. 🖤 The X Factor was the first Maiden album to be released since I became fan. I love the dark and brooding mood of it and I think Blaze sounds great here! Killers is great also, but it always seemed to me as a collection of at least some songs which didn't make it on the debut. Virtual XI is one of the "weakest" Maiden albums for me. Futureal and Clansman are great, and there are some great melodies overall, but some of the choruses are just WAY too repetitive.

Fuck yeah man. Finally a video that brings these 3 amazing albums together, I will leave Virtual XI from the other three since it´s my personal second worst Iron Maiden album (Educated Fool, The Clansman and Como Estais Amigo are amazing songs though). Here´s my take on it: I´d rank Killers as number one followed by X-Factor, debut and at the bottom Virtual XI, this ranking is according to my personal taste. In terms of "greatness" I agree that the debut has to be at the top followed by Killers, X factor and Virtual XI. As much as I love X-Factor I can´t say that it has a lot of "greatness" points in terms of influence and prestige, the Big Four for example were massively inspired by those first two records alone. X-Factor is more of a hidden cult gem in Iron Maiden´s darkest times but if that´s your metric for "greatness" then sure it can be at the same level as Killers, it´s an absolute phenomenal record with no doubt. Badass hoodie too, I need one 🤘

Killers an easy win for me. Debut Birch production, introduction of Adrian, Clive and Paul both giving peak performances. Paul's voice was really starting to come into its own before he hit the fuck it button! Also I certainly wouldn't call it straightforward. Killers is the most unformulaic of all Maiden albums. 2 instrumentals, a song with no solos (just harmonies), a song with a guitar solo before the vocals even start, a ballad that stays a ballad, and elements of funk! Probably the most influential Maiden album when you hear others bands speak about them too

The thing is these albums are not only non-Bruce, but also different musicians and producers. So when comparing them, it’s not easy to merely see them in terms of the vocalist. I think Blaze deserves a lot of credit for his songwriting contributions. I wish the Blaze albums had more edits.

I got onboard with Maiden at exactly the same time waiting for the release of The X Factor. I go back to that album a lot too, though when I do, I always listen to it with the 3 cut tracks strategically inserted into the tracklist. As far as ranking goes, yes, the two Di'Anno albums are the more historically important albums, and songwriting-wise are probably stronger than the Blaze material. But, I prefer Blaze over Di'Anno, so I usually rank TXF and VXI above the debut and Killers.

Paul has always been my favourite Maiden singer and I can't choose between his albums. I can listen to Paul's albums back to back, but Bruce's voice is too intense for that. 🤭
@vozmajster101121 күн бұрын
Killers is in a way my all time favorite from Maiden... It just had that different atmosphere and Paul's voice and style was simply something amazing! Of course Iron Maiden is an awesome album too, songs like Prowler or Remember Tomorrow and the others will always have a special place in my heart... About Blaze Bayley's era... Many people don't like it, I heard it back when the albums were new and I still keep hearing it now after so many years, but some of my all time favorite songs from Maiden are from those two albums! Man on the Edge? The Clansman? Futureal? Sign of the Cross? The Aftermath? All just so great and not just those songs! Blaze is an underrated singer and it really is a shame that the band refused tuning their instruments a bit lower at concerts so Blaze could actually sing Bruce's songs... That's I think the main reason why many people say their concerts sucked with Blaze. It was clearly not his mistake though! I mean who can possibly get their voice to perform in such a higher key than their voice actually is? Blaze is NOT a bad singer, the band just couldn't (and refused to) find the sweet spot for his key and that's what makes so many people dislike that era, but damn does it still work damn well! Say what you want, but I will always keep the albums with Blaze very high on my imaginary tier list! 💯

Until I seen Blaze live and appreciate it more now its in my car at the moment great album and lyrics. And I love the over all production of it Blaze had big shoes to fill bless him Bruce was energetic and had crowd control which Blaze didnt have. And I often wonder what Maiden would have sounded like if Paul had stayed a bit longer.
@BAMozzy692 ай бұрын
Iron Maiden/Killers can be interchangeable for top spot in my opinion - at the moment, I'd agree that Iron Maiden probably edges it and Phantom of the Opera, Iron Maiden, Running Free are classics that still are loved today. Of course when Number of the Beast released, that took the band to a whole new level - I remember Run to the Hills releasing - loved the song and video. I thought Blaze would be a good choice having heard some wolfsbane stuff - they weren't my favourite - but I liked Bruce's Solo stuff and was willing to give Blaze a chance, but after Fear of the Dark, the Vocals are extremely weak. It sounds like the 'songs' were written for Bruce but Blaze was struggling, that became more apparent 'live' so whilst I thought some of the Music, Lyrics and overall songs are great, they are let down by weak vocals that demand a 'strong' Singer. I still struggle to listen to the Blaze Albums - in fact I think they are my least listened to Albums because I struggle to listen to that voice - especially with so many other great Maiden Albums - I've bought them ALL since 7th Son the day of release, although I owned all the previous Albums, I had to wait for Birthdays/Christmas or shopping trips as I wasn't near music shops or old enough to drive myself and bought both Blaze Albums Day 1.
@azzajames76612 ай бұрын
As music is subjective, I personally think that Iron Maidens-(Iron Maiden) as it was ground breaking is first, then X factor as it was dark and brooding with some truly great songs on it, then Killers, as it was a cleaner more polished second album, and finally last is Virtual XI, which has great songs on it, but as an album it was missing something🤔🤘 Up the mighty Irons!!🤘🤘

@sumonjamal1653Ай бұрын
Steve Harris is actually very proud of both 'The X factor' and 'Virtual XI'... because he was the sole producer and those records were entirely his vision w/ no compromise. He wasn't keen on firing Blaze Bayley... but the band was not in huge demand and they couldn't book any more tours without losing money, added to the fact that Blaze was losing his voice singing Bruce Dickinson's songs on tour and they had to cancel a few shows. Ultimately, it was a business decision... Blaze Bayley said that the band morale was low during the 'Virtual XI' tour and he hoped that a 3rd record w/ Iron Maiden would bring back some fanfare... But in early '99, he was called in by management and told that he was no longer in the band... He guessed correctly that Bruce Dickinson was coming back and they confirmed it, so he left gracefully and said that he cherished his time as the singer of Iron Maiden. I got the impression listening to Blaze Bayley interviews that joining Iron Maiden was a very different experience than his band Wolfsbane, which was basically a bar band... Blaze admitted that he wasn't the best songwriter coming into Maiden and learned a lot from working w/ Steve Harris (While Bruce Dickinson was an accomplished songwriter) Back in 1981/ '82, Maiden's producer Martin Birch helped make the transition from Paul Di'Anno to Bruce Dickinson... Birch was integral in making Maiden's music progress w/ Bruce Dickinson's vocals on 'The number of the beast'... Birch wasn't there for the transition from Dickinson to Blaze Bayley... and they needed that guidance to make it work musically and sonically w/ Bayley's vocal delivery. Steve Harris is not the best producer - they needed producer Kevin Shirley to come in around 2000 on 'Brave New World'... and bring some organization and editing to Maiden's records that was lacking in the Bayley era... Blaze talked about working on the track 'Sign of the Cross' back in 1994/ '95 and it took forever to record it cos no one in the band could figure out how to play it... He recalled Harris playing 'The Clansman' in the studio on an acoustic bass and asked him what he thought; Blaze was impressed - it became a standout song in Maiden's catalog. A lot of Blaze's ideas for a 3rd Maiden album went on his solo album 'Silicon Messiah'... and he wasn't a bad singer at all. Maiden would have to change the tunings to accommodate his voice... but maybe it could have worked. Still, fans were ecstatic that Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith reunited w/ Iron Maiden in 1999 ... and Blaze Bayley has been working successfully, making records and touring... The same thing happened to Anthrax when vocalist Joe Belladonna rejoined the band full-time in 2011... John Bush is a good singer but Belladonna has a certain chemistry w/ Anthrax that can't be replicated live or on a record.

Best one for me is Killers without shadow of doubt. The X Factor and the debut are utterly different yet both excellent records. And despite featuring truly iconic songs (Prowler, Sanctuary, Running Free and especially Phantom Of The Opera) I like their 1995 a tad bit more (tracks Sign Of The Cross, Lord Of The Flies, Man On The Edge, Fortunes Of War, Look For The Truth, The Edge Of Darkness - not to mention the sadly left out Judgement Day - are utter killers and the remainder of the songs are great too). Curiously enough IMO these three albums feature zero fillers which is nothing short of amazing. The same can't be said about Virtual XI. Yes, it features excellent tracks like Futureal, The Clansman or The Educated Fool, yet at least three songs are an utter drag IMO (TAATG, WTWC and DLTTEOAS). That being said when it comes to being more influential it's IMO the first album, and then Killers. And no matter how much I love The X Factor when it comes to influence, I think it resides on the same echelon as Virtual XI: residual.

Also for the early tape you play, it is from rehearsal room, with a very fresh lineup at the time. There is a tape released very recently that was recorded live, with probably the longest early line up ( willcock on vocals, murray/ sawyer on guitar and Ron matthews on drums ) that shows good aggrassive maiden back in 76-77 kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKDYeqirl7eJZs0 This video is awesome as we can hear the Bar Maiden sound, and some of the more obscure players like tony moore on keyboard ( yep )

Maiden is such a unique band in that it's not the vocalist who makes the band. It's the bassist. Steve is the one truly indispensable member of the group. Niko is not as vital as some may think as the first three albums didn't involve him and are classics. Many even citing NOTB as their fave. I'd even go as far as to say Clive Burr may have been slightly better but that's a matter of taste and certainly no slight on Niko. The band survived without Adrian for a while. It would survive without Janick as Dave and Adrian were a duo for years and it could survive the absence of Dave with Janick and Adrian being the iconic duo. Blaze gets way too much of a raw deal. He fit fine and the band still sounded like Maiden. A version of at least. Yes, he was horrific live but that was because the band refused to alter the key of Bruce's songs causing him to strain constantly and blow his voice out. Blaze's voice sits in a completely different register. He isn't worse, just different. In fact, I would argue his voice is a little more dramatic and he certainly does the lows better.

First Maiden album I ever heard was X Factor. I absolutely hated it upon first listen, and I even tried to give it to a friend who didn't want it. I got it from one of those mail order cd programs back in the day. But I gave it another shot and ended up loving it by my third listen. It's probably my second favorite album of theirs behind Somewhere in Time. Virtual IX isn't as bad as people say. The band sounds a bit tired at points but the production is better than X-Factor. It still holds my least favorite Maiden song of all time though, Angel and the Gambler. But stuff like Futureal? Lightning Strikes Twice? Educated Fool? There's some real bangers on there.
