I was too young to really be able to analyse Tyson at the time, but even as a kid I remember the hype. I knew people that felt he was totally invincible in hand to hand combat too, but ironically many of those people still think that! They ring out all the excuses. I think it's because casual fans understand 3 basic aspects of a fight: speed, power and aggression. Tyson had all 3 in abundance. Whereas they can't understand the technical aspects. They can't understand angles, the intricacies of defence, distance control, tempo control, etc. So Tyson was a casual fan's dream. It's like a striker in football. A casual football fan will not understand what a deep lying playmaker does, but they'll understand the guy that grabs all the goals.
@leebaker57554 жыл бұрын
Tyson was a master student of understanding angels,distance he mentally understood all aspects of the fight game was he the g.o.a.t. only a novice would say that but he entertainment at its peak at his rain.

More to the point: Tyson failed when he was matched up against elites who not only had boxing mastery (technical facility) but also mental fortitude (psychological resilience)... psychologically and emotionally he wasn't up to the attrition predicated warfare Holyfield and Lewis (and Douglas ) brought to bare upon Tyson's power based attack... but, we agree...

I'm what Hatman calls a 'casual' who has just finished reading Tyson's lengthy autobiography. Tyson was one seriously screwed up Dude with breath-taking appetites for drink, drugs and sex. And post-1988, he wasn't a boxer who did alcohol and drugs, he was an alcoholic and a drug addict who boxed to make money to feed his habits. The miracle is that he's still alive!!!

First of all, great job on the video. My patience for KZbin videos is about 4 minutes, and I watched all 3 hours. I grabbed some food and a beer and it was perfect. Your knowledge and detail was very good, and you had some interesting background and amateur information as well. Well done. I don’t know if it’s something to agree or disagree with but I HATE the term “fanboy”. Why can’t we just be called Tyson fans? As a fan of Tyson, I don’t dismiss any of his shortcomings and/or failures. I don’t believe any man is unbeatable. His style obviously didn’t match up well against Holyfield’s, and I like that you mentioned the sparring..Because if I remember, Tyson knew how good Holyfield was because when he was asked about him and if he thought Holyfield posed a threat to Him during his heyday in the mid to late 80s, Tyson just repeatedly said “he’s a really good fighter”. You could see he meant it and let’s face it, he was not overly political. He was very blunt. I also remember how hard he came out against Lennox Lewis. I was so excited. I wanted to see Him knock Him out. I have a lot of respect for Lennox Lewis, but it would have been great to see Tyson regain his dominance. Anyway, here’s where I disagree with You..Tyson getting rid of his original trainer Kevin Rooney and Cus dying was HUGE. Just because Tyson undermined the role of Rooney doesn’t mean it’s accurate. There was s distinct difference in his style, approach, and confidence during and after Rooney. You could put up a great argument t to disregard this, but it’s still not enough in my opinion. I think the best way to describe the loyalty to Mike Tyson is because people are enamored with either being the best or witnessing the best, and Tyson was invincible for a significant amount of time when guys from my generation were coming up. There are so many things that go on behind the scenes, that it’s not fair to use anything to justify a loss regardless of the fighter. Whether you want to talk about Tyson‘s mental state, Holyfield taking PED‘s, or whatever it is, the only results that matter are those that occur when the bell goes off. I take things at face value. Mike Tyson fight Evander Holyfield two times and was completely overmatched two times. I think Holyfield would have given him enormous trouble no matter when he fought him, but I do think if he thought him in his prime, it would’ve been a three fight deal like Ali versus Frazier.. I also think that you align age with prime a little too much. Yes, they were four years apart, but the Holyfield that fought Tyson was the best Holyfield there there ever was. Tyson was only 30 years old to Holyfield’s 34, but his prime was years before that. I am a fan of boxing first but I am a fan of Mike Tyson. I’m also a fan of Evander Holyfield. I have a ton of respect for what that guy accomplished. He made a fan out of me. I don’t think anybody that knows at least a little bit about boxing made an excuse for the Buster Douglas fight. Mike Tyson himself didn’t make an excuse for the Buster Douglas fight. He was just better that night and that was it. End of story. However, I believe that the tragedies that he suffered going into that fight gave him extra motivation, and it completely adds up because he was never the same before or after that. He was always the guy who had a lot of talent but was relatively lazy and never realized his full potential, except for that one night. It’s one thing to win a championship, it’s another to be a champion. I believe that based on the research I’ve done that although Mike Tyson did a lot of things he could have gotten in a lot of trouble for, I don’t think that he deserved to go to jail for what he did go to jail for. I think Desiree Washington, his manipulative ex wife Robin Givens, and the leetch Don King absolutely did a number on his career. Would he have retired an undefeated heavyweight for the first time and only time since Rocky Marciano? Maybe. He certainly would’ve had a lot better of a shot. Anyway so hi see Mike Tyson is the most talented, exciting, and dynamic heavyweight ever to live. He was champion of the world at the age of 20. He was a kid destroying men inside of a couple of rounds, many in the first round. His speed power and agility for a heavyweight is completely unmatched. He will forever, as great as he was, be remembered for what he could have been.

yes but his style because of his size disadvantage was more vulnerable than a bigger fighter who can get away with sloppy technique and fundamentals like Wilder tor example. If your short and look to get inside and don't move your head constantly you allow the taller fighter to easily land jabs and right crosses as douglous did against him and lewis. In his prime his head movement was unmatched and allowed him to not only avoid getting hit but to disrupt there rythm and create openings for his bombs and he threw conbinations which allowed him to land punches his opponent didn't see as well as constantly go to the body to wear his opponents down. every athlete requires dicipline but he required it to the extreme.

I totally disagree with your view video maker that Tyson wouldn't of been more successful had he stayed with Kevin Rooney.. As it's so clear to see how his skills diminished from the Bruno fight.. You say you know alot about Tyson but didn't mention the one single thing why he was so successful in the ring.... His peek-a-boo teqnique.. He stopped using this after Rooney but went back to this style after coming out of prison... If you look at the 2nd Bruno fight, McNeely fights, he barely took a punch as his defence was tight.. No one landed many punches against mike while he was with Rooney... So to continuously say that Tyson fans are wrong that Rooney made such a difference is totally naive... Tyson fans are not blind... We can see loads of footage of Tyson's training with Rooney as that speaks volumes... It's some of the most fascinating superb training footage on KZbin!.. Non of Tyson's other trainers worked with him so closely.. Yes Tyson should of learnt to adapt more...But he forsook the peakaboo style that made him so successful...Cus taught him it and Rooney maintained it... We can all see the evidence of him leaving Rooney... Tyson was a student that needed to be led.. If he stayed with Rooney he would of undoubtedly had much more success... Everyone can see that and it's so clear... The very next fight after leaving Rooney he got hit so much by Bruno and Ruddock. So i don't know how you can say you know more about Tyson than us yet you can't see this... And you didn't mention the peek-a-boo style even once! This style is why the small little Tyson was so successful because this technique works!

Totally agree. Tyson himself admitted that he wasn't a great. He was just good at projecting greatness. In other words, Tyson was a brilliant student that needed guidance. The way that Rooney would seamlessly blend simultaneous footwork, head movement, and combinations into his mittwork was some incredible and unique stuff.
@EnerGys-REAL-TALK5 жыл бұрын
@@hugoleesong yes Rooney was a great trainer.. You'd think Mike would remember everything he was taught but it was clear to see that he didn't after his loss to Douglas look how he tried to knock out his next appointments with just 1 punch and coming straight in. Only with razor Ruddock did he start being more defensive again
@hugoleesong5 жыл бұрын
@@EnerGys-REAL-TALK yeah, of course his old magic appeared in spits and spurts because it's total muscle memory for him. But the biggest evidence of his technical decline was in the total absence of what used to be a rock tight defence. Stunning how many normal hooks Evander hit Tyson with that the old Tyson would have punished with ease. As good a performance as that was by Holyfield, not even the maker of this video can objectively say that Tyson's performance was that of his younger days. Ironically, Tyson is so done with that fight and at peace with the result as opposed to Holyfield that still has a chip on his shoulder like he has something to prove. They are both legends. No need to say that one isn't because the other one is.

Like you say, he did what a heavyweight champion needed to do to solidify their name as one of the best ever. Before winning the titles, he beat the fringe contenders; Ribalta, Tillis, Frazier, Ferguson, Green, and when he got to world level, he was beating all the champions and highly ranked contenders with ease. That is why I feel Tyson deserves to be a top 10 all time heavyweight champion.
