You know Shawn, for more than 30 years I have dreamed of doing and having the lifestyle that you are fortunate enough to have. Hopefully soon enough - I'm working on it - I will be able to take many of the teachings and lessons from your work and apply it to my world. Living just a few hours from your location, I am able to very much understand some of your day to day weather challenges and also the challenges of working alone in the bush. Safety is paramount when alone.....one of those lessons you have made clear. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us the viewers. I more than respect all you do. Steve

The octagon house I built up in Nipissing Village ON had a full basement, a loft with a roof patio with patio doors off the loft but it wasn't a log house. I sold it back in 89 and moved to Arizona. The people that own it now have really finished and it looks the way I would have finished beautiful. I love log houses 🏘

I've been watching you for several years and really enjoy your channel. I used to work construction for 20 years and at one time I framed houses. I used a steel shank hammer like you use and I developed "tennis elbow" as well. I could barely do anything with that arm it hurt so much. So I was surprised to see you using that steel shanked hammer so much and not seemingly being affected by it. What I had to do to solve the issue, I begain using a wood handled hammer. I reinforced the shank with carpenters twine and epoxy so it wouldn't break pulling nails. It worked beautifully. I was supprised how fast the pain in my elbow dissapeared, just by this one change. Anyway, don't know if this helps, but sorry you're having this pain and I hope you get better. And again, I enjoy your channels. I find it so peaceful and relaxing. Thx

Yesterday I saw your video, the one of the accident in your eye. The accidents are there, waiting for their share of mathematical probability to happen. They are unavoidable. The only thing one has to do (and it is mandatory for those of us who work on our own) is to minimize the effects of accidents, and be prepared to request assistance in an emergency. I highly recommend that you get a clear, full-coverage face mask when using the ax when doing woodworking, that is, when working with the ax close to the face. But above all, I recommend having a handheld radio to communicate with the rangers in case something happens to you or to Cali that you cannot solve by yourself.

When I worked retail I had to remove items from boxes for display and that gripping resulted in tennis elbow. I had to wear a brace between my elbow and my wrist and what a difference so long as I gave it a break every now and then. If I worked a job where grasping or gripping was going to happen I'd wear it anyway. You have a lot of logs to go it would be a good investment.

Have switched to a Cordless DeWalt 20V chainsaw that I can charge via my solar system. The weight difference is such that it doesn't strain a lot of body parts that my Stihl MS 390 does. The DeWalt is fine for softwoods and limbing but no good for hardwoods of any size. The DeWalt would be perfect for the saddles and I like the quietness of it as well as the power.

Shawn! I am a retired Chiropractor from Australia, use to treat mainly farmers, builders tradies. My secret was to get them to buy a 5Kgm Kettle Bell from one of your sports stores. The technique is to swing the bell to and throw on one side, then on one of the swings start to take it straight out above your head. Your Radial Head Of your radius bone has slipped out of its groove. The swinging bell then taking it above your head will cross stretch your wrist, will then release the radial head. I had a 90% success rate with this, with no massage. It is the collage Ligaments that are under stress because of the radial head on the opposite bone The Ulna... cheers Red. 🇦🇺🙋🏽‍♂️🏡

Hope you are feeling better after your accident with the axe. Chainsaw would help with the end cuts. You might need to do a building blitz with some of your friends to get the cabin dried in before snow. That would also take some of the pressure off your body pains. The gas you burn with the chainsaw is not even a drop in the bucket with carbon footprint even when you run the lumber mill you have. Good luck and stay safe.

@@rory644 The point of me asking is not because there is info available online, but that casanana8 had some simple exercises. Exercises are many and, often I've found, some are much better than others; and, likewise, some physiotherapists are much better than others, and some ways of presenting info are much better or worse. Specific exercises that are recommended (because they really worked for someone) are much better than searching generally and sifting through and watching many videos. Shawn is not online much, and I'd rather he was uploading content when he is, rather than doing that. :)

You might not like this, but I knew damned well you were going to hurt yourself... In one recent video I saw you raise a log to where it swung free and you were still moving up to the floor... Many years ago, I was Crushed at work, by a 2500# Steel I-beam. If you get pinched between two logs what can you do if you're alone...??? I think you are taking too much for granted and not thinking out what could go wrong and how to Single-handed, get out of a situation... I also noticed your lack of eye protection and think you should be wearing a Full Face Shield, not just glasses... although that would be better than nothing at all... Really! I love watching your videos and get very anxious for your Safety at times... Please be more careful 🙂

Tennis Elbow: Wear a forearm band tightly, which may prevent aggravating the injury. I suffered a tennis elbow injury - but a regular massage, of the forearm muscles, alternating warm and ice water bottles and wearing a forearm band whenever some pressure is exerted. helped me cure it eventually, but took 5-6 months.

Hey Shawn, it is good to see that you are thinking about your safety on this new build. I hesitated to post this because it is obvious that you think things through and consider all of the issues related to the cabin and the things you are trying to accomplish. But there is one safety issue that stands out to me, that I hope you will address. You are working with several heavy objects above your head, including large pulleys, chains, and tight cables which could snap. Any of these could cause a severe head injury. I would definitely prefer to see you wearing a safety helmet. Not only when you are lifting the logs, but any time you are in the work area, near or under one of these objects. By the way, thanks for both channels, I have enjoyed every minute.

If they had chainsaws, they would have used them. Please you need to do this too. It is safer, quicker, neater, cleaner, more accurate. Your body will get stronger using the chainsaw.

@Clinton Whoo, so well articulated. Even though I am only a subscriber, I worry about the safety of Shawn as if he is a dear old friend. Shawn has his reasons of course, but...

He just really hates the noise. And loves using the old tools with his hands, it's part of him. Hard to switch that.

This is a much bigger cabin build than the previous one and Shawn is not getting any younger. Enough of trying to prove he can build one completely by himself! Let go of the ego flexing and get some of your buddies to come help you because yeah, an injury can delay or completely stop the build!

I know this sounds messed up Shawn but I am very glad to hear it was only your eye that you injured. More physical faced injuries like lower back legs or arms have this funny way of making life a living hell when trying to recover and work at the same time.

Shawn I have the same "TENNIS ELBOW" problem with my trigger finger. I use my second finger as a trigger now and point my index in the firearm safe position it helps immensely.

you can now have trigger fingers fixed without surgery.....they go in with a syringe like thing and can snip what they need to without opening up!

@@judysears6417 mine unfortunately is previous tendon damage and scar tissue. Both my trigger fingers have had injury's requiring stiches and/or surgery. But not using them helps the elbows.

Shawn, try this for your Elbow. Hyaluronic joint complex. It's made by Source Naturals. Not cheap, but works very well for me. I'm 75 now with no joint pain and I've worked like you do for many years. Try it, I think you will be glad you did.

Shawn, I'm a retired Osteopath. I've been treating that elbow problem for 30 years, There are a lot of treatments out there, but if the Radial head does not sit properly on the end of your Humerus the ligaments stretch and cause Inflammation and therefore pain. See if anyone in your area does this Manipulatory technique. Keep up the good work, I watch both channels regularly.I also built my log cabin using Robert Chambers scribing style.
These logs are heavy, but they do have character
