I wondered about this in high school band and I never really understood the answers I got until I went into our jazz band a clinician (person who comes in to help us with our pieces who specialize in our specific instrument) used the same cake example as you did. For anyone who has trouble with 3s 5s or 7s fitting in (most likely the 5s and 7s as we all practice 3s). It's a good thing to divide it up in your hands like LRRLR (5) or LRRLRRL (7) so you still feel the triplet patter (LRR) to gain familiarity, but also learn the 5s and 7s for freedom later on after you get comfortable with the timing. 5s and 7s are GREAT in solos because people think you're doing some complex thing, but your not. Also learn to play 3s 5s and 7s against quarter or eighth notes (so left hand plays 3s, right plays eight notes). It makes some INSANELY cool grooves that almost sound like polyrythms. Any questions on how to play these, tips/tricks, or for the left hand triplets right hand eighth patterns just reply and I'll get to them when I can as these GREATLY improve your drumming especially in improv.

The cake metaphor shows an easier way to measure tuplets so that you don't have to estimate them. To cut a cake into three equal slices, first mark the quarters, then cut along the top line, and finally bisect both the second and third quarters. To bring that back into the realms of music, it shows how eighth-notes land on the first, and between the second and third eighth-note triplets, etc.

I think they're pretty rational though.

I have the Polynome on an IPOD Touch 4. I like it , but it shuts off after several minutes. Is there a way to keep it going?

Polynome (for Apple devices) or Pyramid (for PC or Mac). Both are the same program; they're made by Joe Crabtree and available at his website.

Thanks Brian. There's lots of drumming in the other videos on my KZbin channel and website. I just wanted to do a ground up series about irrational rhythms. It gets a bit more interesting when I move on to 5s, 7s, 11s, etc. But it's still mainly theoretical. Check out my other stuff if you're after drumming. *awful
