3ds Max is one of the most known 3d software in a lot of industries such as feature film VFX, video game development and architectural visualization but it seems like there are people talking about the death of 3ds Max since Autodesk discontinued Softimage back in 2014. After Softimage was killed the image of Autodesk became worse among 3d artists and they started to wonder is 3ds Max next?

I have heard this more than 10 years. But, 3dsMax is still best selling DCC on earth. That tells something. Check who are the 3ds Max users, it is used for vfx, visualization, commercial, feature animation, illustration, medical animation concept art, game, VR, AR, motion graphics . You name it. None of DCC is as widely used as 3dsMax.

The mass exodus from Autodesk 3DS Max is not about the abilities of the program. The advanced features of other programs. It is because of the way Autodesk treats people using their products and their ridiculous Subscriptions. It is based on how they have treated people who have been using their software from inception. The value for what you get does not match the subscription pricing. Plus updates are not really updates as much as they make subscribers pay for bug fixes.

I do archviz, I use 3dsMax only for that. It's feels old, abandoned, slow, uncomfortable compared to others. For example, the material editor is still on a separate window, it's really annoying. In the other hand I have Blender, I started using it a couple months ago, It's feels fresh, lightweight, quick, easy to work with. I even did some complex animations in eevee (realtime render engine). Amazing and powerfull. And the more important, it's fun to work with, that's inspiring and motivating. Also it's feels alive, with constant updates.

Theres something thats missing in this conversation. The fact that a vast amount of artists that exist with the 3ds max skills in game development and film industries. Sure its important to learn new software but its not practical to move to a completely new package often. Also as you mentioned 3ds max has the biggest plugin options out of all of the 3d packages. That basically makes it like an infinite package when comparing it to Blender or Maya. Dont like the basic set up of max? Im sure theres a plug in for that.

I would argue there are massive issues with Maya LT(limited), that mean it's not really a worthy of comparison to other softwares. I do quite like Maya's radial menus, and workflow, but that limited version is an insult.

Actually, Arch Viz may be first where Max loses its ground. Just release fully-featured Corona for Blender + some asset converter - it's done, literally, for small and mid-sized arch-viz companies there is nothing Blender + fully-featured Corona couldn't do. I feel like autodesk should come up with a new app that blends and streamlines the best parts of both 3ds max and maya. If you think about it, both maya and max are pretty old, so a new modern software that takes all of that into one package and makes it all easier to use would be nice. Blender is pretty much doing that, that's why it's so successful (plus it's price of course)
@nodespaghetti5312
@nodespaghetti5312 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. If you look at Maya (I've only played with Max) in particular, it's held back badly by its history. The software from its inception was a Frankenstein's Monster of multiple apps combined, held together by the (then groundbreaking) MEL scripting language. It's snowballed quite a few apps over the years and its node-structure is really clever. I love the node editor and the spaghetti I've made in there to create my rigs is one of the sources for my channel's name. Maya has a lot of nice features. But it's slow, buggy, bloated, disorganized, overpriced, and (this is subjective) *just ugly* . MEL is badly designed, hard to read, hard to write, and hard to extend. And they can't change it because Maya is built around it. From what I've seen, Max's scripting language is similarly problematic. Maya could be a beautiful software if it ever had a loving home. It's kind of a shame to see it languishing in Autodesk's care. Sure it gets updates but they're pretty weak. Certainly not worth the yearly price. I think rewriting the software is the only way to keep them going towards the future. They're old and need to be rebuilt from the ground up. Blender has gotten a lot of love recently after 2.8. That was after a *three year* wait for the update while the entire dependency graph and viewport display/UI was re-written. And don't discount the free-and-open nature of Blender. It's the ultimate in adaptability, because it's possible to modify it directly. The Python API is the latest version of Python (not the deprecated 2.7 as in Houdini and Maya, others too more than likely) and it's a pleasure to use because it's designed to be idiomatic to Python and native to Blender (not a wrapper around another language as in Maya for example) When Blender 2.8 came, every old addon became unusable after the switch. Not a problem for Blender users, because we still have the old version, forever. And the addons are (essentially all of them) open source, too, so we can fix them if we know how. .blend files are mostly backward and forward compatible because of the DNA/RNA system. This wouldn't work for Maya because it stores it's files primarily as MEL (I think even mb files are just compiled MEL) -- if MEL was changed Maya files would need a special "legacy interpreter" or something. If that's even possible. And that's the crux of the issue. Maya and Max are such a force because of their legacy. Re-building them would defeat the purpose of their existence. People keep buying Maya and Max because it would cost them too much to change their studio's pipeline to anything else, even if they want to. Disrupting this stability would be a huge hurdle for Autodesk, one I doubt they're interested in trying to jump. They're not the most innovative bunch.
@lordavius
@lordavius 4 жыл бұрын
You guys are ignoring the fact that XSI was basically this "uber" software. Bottom line? It just did NOT sell! It's market worldwide was so small it could not pay for itself, even after years of ADSK promoting, bundling, and helping push it. Sure, it's easy to say that ADSK bought it to kill it, but it is not the truth at all - XSI was on "sale" exactly because it was not selling and ADSK was just the last of many companies who did own Softimage/XSI but could not make a business out of it. And saying "People keep buying Maya and Max because it would cost them too much to change their studio's pipeline" is also NOT true. Houdini (specially the full version) is MORE expensive than Max or Maya, yet, it is making gigantic strides on the VFX market. What really makes sense for the companies is productivity - and that is more true than ever for VFX, just look at how many big ones closed their doors in recent times. If Blender could alleviate their situation (because it's free) wouldn't you think they would all jump to it in a blink? The reality (and that was also discussed in length by other people) is that Blender STILL lacks in MANY places to be productive, for many industries. Of course it is getting better, and for sure I see it getting more ground, but it's naive to think that company owners, who live trying to make their business flourish, would avoid changing their pipeline if they saw financial advantage on the long run because of high upfront costs. The real cost of changing the pipeline, TODAY, is a stark fall in productivity. Can it change in the future? Sure, and we see some companies at least doing some research and testing on that (adopting Blender on their pipeline).

In our company, Revit is king but our architects still do some work in AutoCAD and use dwg files from our clients and other disciplines such as our Process group all the time. So even if we use Revit for most of the modelling and final drawings, we still have to buy AutoCAD licenses. I suspect a lot of companies still have plenty of AutoCAD licenses for precisely that reason which strengthens Autodesk's sales. I personally take dwg files and Revit files into Max to do my renders. Until Blender can natively and cleanly import Revit and dwg files it still won't be widely used in Archviz. For that reason Max is going to be around for awhile since its a much bigger industry worldwide than VFX.

@@oso_Peligroso Not only that (importing DWG and Revit files) but also play nice with a huge library of models that companies build over the years, and also have good ties with render engines that are very well tuned for towards viz work (like Corona and Vray). So, even if Blender could take away that particular (gigantic) block (good I/O with design files), it would still have a very tough battle to fight on this market. Also, let's not forget that on the AEC market, software price is not that much of a burden as paying your personnel. The margins are much higher than the ones on gaming and VFX (just look at how many big VFX houses have closed their doors in recent years) and software more than pays for itself if they are productive.

I use a few other softwares beside Blender, but as a content creator on KZbin there's just no comparison. Blender has a bigger audience, lower cost to make videos, easy to get that comment section gold by starting a Blender v. Maya flame war. For people making training content it makes sense. The hobbyists will always use Blender, and they'll always be a bigger market than professionals. You make more money selling Fords than Lamborghinis.

I`ve been using max since it came out, before that I used 3DS4 DOS version. I think there`s a niche that 3DSmax fills in and that is polymodeling and archviz. Yeah dynamics, hair, etc are not it`s strong suite but it`s always the one game developers use and also people who poly model like me. Usage depends, it varies person to person. It won`t die soon but it is hella buggy....just yesterday i was merging a 5 mb file into the archviz scene....it took 20 minutes. I have a ryzen 9, 64gb ram and running samsung evo pro ssd.....so it has to be software related. At it`s core 3dsmax is terrible, viewport is one of the worst in the lineup but its UI and modifier stack is still easier than Maya and Houdini. I just wish they would revamp the viewport, file and memory handling and integrate mudbox into 3dsmax and proper hair, cloth and fluids / gases sim. I started using Blender and I still model faster in MAX, albeit Blender is great and free. Gives you something to think about....its free and has everything built into it with an epic viewport shading and realtime rendering capabilities.

I would say that Maya increased in popularity over the years for game dev companies at least medium and AAA. In any case in their jobs listing requirements they are usually asking for "Knowledge of 3ds Max/Maya or equivalent software" so you can basically use whatever you want. Only a few companies state "Knowledge of Maya required". In VFX they are way more strict from what i seen and the combo Maya+Houdini is what you usually find. However with that said my sub for Maya LT is running out and i'm planning to switch to Houdini Indie for various reasons.

Ultimately, there’s concern because the Entertainment division of the company doesn’t make much money relative to architecture and engineering. There’s already been shifting of plug-ins that were exclusively for Max to Maya, which is indicative of developers having questions about the longevity of Max based on their communication with the company, but it's also beneficial for them to be able to sell software for more then one platform. Up to this point Autodesk has not explicitly developed an AutoCAD interoperation infrastructure into Maya the way they have with Max, so until that happens I wouldn’t really worry about it.

I halfway suspect that at some point they’ll integrate most of Max into AutoCAD and make it some ”Visualization Edition” they’ll charge extra for and then sell off all the entertainment products including MAX and they’ll probably sell it all to Apple...I suspect that’s why they’ve been so amiable to. There is nothing similar to modifier stack in other software, yes Blender has it but it is not as capable as Max. I don't care if some half baked solution comes build inside software, like scattering in Mash/Maya ... Merge them. It's not about will they drop 3DS Max but if they should. They're both 3D products used in the same fields. Both have high learning curves. Do we need multiple competing standards from the same company? It's bad for people to learn, costly for them to maintain 2 major standards. 3DS Max needs to merge into Maya. Make the default GUI that starts looking a little more like Maya with each update. Maya devs need to look why people prefer 3DS Max and what they can learn. Any time 3DS Max gets a new feature Maya has, duplicate Maya's UI. Maya needs a UI mode that makes it more like 3DS Max. Make the transition as easy as possible. Both programs need to start to read each others files. If the GUI matches each other then it's all about back end features. If they cared about users then I think a 10 year plan would smoothly transition users as much as possible. They bought Maya 15 years ago. They should have slowly started this transition then. And Blender needs to be concentrated on getting all users to transition to Blender as quickly as possible.

If Autodesk moves the unwrapping tools from max to maya, I might think of going 100% to Maya, but ATM the unwrapping tools are so bad compared to max. Also max has the advantage of modifiers when modelling, its a more procedural work flow. Also having to constantly delete history in Maya sucks. For me, modelling unwrapping in max, rigging animation in Maya. Would be great if they merged the best of both into one, but can't see that happening because maya and max at their core work too differently. I can use one or the other, but I like it when I get access to both at work and can use each programs strengths.

Yes, AutoDesk has been mainly a CAD tools provider for a long time... that long time being since forever. They bought Maya and 3DS Max to expand their range. Architects and designers don't use 3DS Max in order to design things, the tool for that is still AutoCAD. big no, Max will live for a long time, there’s a lot of development ongoing for Max, Bifrost for Max, AI retopo, AI automatic unwrap, etc but Bifrost for Max will be the same as Bifrost for Maya .

Yeah, so how would you explain the fact, that there are still parts of the code backing back to 90s? I talk about curve editor.... Other than that, there is at least 6 different node editors, all incorporated straight from plugins, each with different GUI, elements and architecture. 3ds max is a Frankenstein of a software

3dsMax 2010 is a great tool for modeling, I dont think its gonna die because software can be deleted only from a hard drives, so its cant die. But prices makes this tool unreachable for indie devs, v-ray and other high price plugins also - unreachable. Maya also - is a great tool, but 2000$ for online using - please

I believe Autodesk should just lean and invest more towards the engineering stuff, just look at Fusion 360 and AutoCAD for example, I personally use them (student version) and they're really good softwares...

They already invest more on that, they are the top providers of these kind of software, in fact, the what really pays is not the Media & Entertainment is Car, Architecture, Engineering, that's where the money really comes. People tend to think that Films, Games, and VFX provide a lot of money, but, at least for ADSK, what makes money for real is the other stuff.

well, you have Autodesk Revit now, and it's even better at most renderings given the current circumstances, So I really am considering leaving 3ds max after 9 years, people gotta leave emotions behind and expect anything, it's an industry not a fairytale. learning another software is much easier than earlier days, So if Autodesk killed 3Ds max so be it, the rest depends on your second usage of the software if you do characters and CG go for Maya, VFX go for C4d and Houdini, If you want the whole package for free you can get Blender

Don't think Max is going anywhere. They are just shifting its purpose. And to be honest, I hate that. When so many people started 3DS Max back in the day they didn't start it to be fucking architects for crying out loud, and I find it to be a bitch move. 3DS Max was an all encompassing program that done ALL 3D work, same as Maya was meant to be, Lightwave, etc. They didn't set out and say "well, we do 3D, but ummm, only in this area"... Which is a slap in the face for anyone that invested in a program and learning it to a level that would take years to learn a new program again. All because they saw fit to focus one program on one thing and the other on something else instead of continue their legacy. Its just annoying. Its not like 3DS Max is lacking in some areas because the program itself cannot do it, and vise versa its not like Maya is lacking in what 3DS does because it can't handle it. They are both lacking in certain directions compared to each other because Autodesk is a bitch. Nuff said.

The Death of 3Ds Max might be possible only if Game Developers created software to do everything Max does but better and much faster. Autodesk needs to start rewriting an entirely new Max from the ground up for a future replacement like a Beta X-Max 4 years from now. They could hire awesome game programmers to help make it optimized on every level.

Apparently, 3ds Max has been dying for a decade now if you listen to the outcries on the internet. Meanwhile, it's generating tons of money for big and small production studios and has some of the most flexible and powerful tools for everyday work.

Autodesk incorporated too many programs. Autodesk is now an Ikea store with a lot of furniture. Blender and Houdini teams are focused only on just one product. Autodesk had Inventor then it developed Fusion360...why? I think 3DS Max is a great product for architects, designers, vfx artists, it’a Swiss knife, Autodesk knows it. It needs a lot of new technologies already implemented in many 3d programs. We will see an new version of Max totally rewritten from scratch, it will be ported also on MacOS. Autodesk will release also a light, probably free,version.

@@SoldatDeRigel Max is the most stable DCC right now, not a single crash and the best performance of all, and I've been using it for almost 20 years without any additional plugins. You're clearly not a Max user, most Max users don't need any plugins and when they need plugins they may use 1 or 2. It's a good thing Max is the DCC with the biggest number of plugins out there, if you need one you can get it, look at how Maya has been buying plugins just to keep the impression of evolving, or how you need plugins in Blender... it's not a bad thing to have the widest range of plugins out there, it opens up possibilities to the users, or you can just use the base software as I do

@@SoldatDeRigel Max was design to work with scripts and plugins, this kind of flexibilty is what permitted to users to create so much tools needed than never a small group of devs would be able. The flexibility to use scripts is one of the strongest points in Max, it's a shame that people doesn't want to put some time to script. It improves a lot your workflow.

Nonsense. It was called 3d Studio developed by Autodesk in 80s, running under DOS. And again became 3dsMax running on Windows developed by Autodesk, in 90s, if you guys ever knew this. Yeah right Autodesk will kill it? An argument for nonsense..
