Nothing come really close to Max in our industry, modifier stack is just so great and it gives people a way to nondestructive modeling and scene assembly. It has a partial proceduralism of Houdini and all Maya/Blender modeling tools plus much more without the destructive nature of Maya. Material management and shading is one of the best, lighting tools are amazing and rendering also. I've started with Maya 20+ years ago and still using it today, with Max I've been using it for around 12 years, but I don't see any reason why I would use Maya except maybe animation. It is required to know Maya in many studios so I still have it in my arsenal, but for every studio I worked for I requested Max and I just used Maya to publish assets and do final cleanups. Blender however, lacks so many tools that you can find in Max, but is also a great companion to it. Maya for animation, Max for scene assembly, modeling, rendering etc, Blender is also getting better and better and is free ... and with Hardops/Boxcutter it is great for concepting. ZBrush is its own class. I would say if you love doing Environments, scene assembly, Modeling, Shading, Rendering, Max is the fastest and most efficient tool and will be like that for a long time, once you add Tyflow, Phoenix, Forestpack and V-Ray or Redshift it is a power house like no other around, nothing literally comes even close to it for 3D generalists.

Yo same boat if 3ds max had better animation tools like Softimage I would have still worked with it to this day, but animating anything there is having no real control unlike Maya or Blender, in 3DS going to different menus just to select a controller or parent feels like the DOS version and don't get me started on the archaic VRML style scripts they made over the years. Honestly It's great software but even CAD software had changed better than 3DS MAX.

I was a Max user since version 2.5 (back in the Discreet days). I'm tremendously grateful for everything its done for me. I made some amazing projects with that software. Eventually, I became a professional freelancer. So.. I could no longer use a hacked version. This is where I became angry at the software for not giving me enough for my hard-earned money. I tried learning Blender for a while, but I was mentally stuck in my paradigm and COULDN'T get myself to learn Blender. That said, with time, it became impossible for me to afford MAX. So I swallowed my pride, got into the "beginner" mentality again and a couple weeks later... I became 90% as fluent in Blender as I was in Max. Nowadays, even if you offered me money, I would NEVER go back to 3dsmax. I completely, 100% fell in love with Blender. Not only the software, but also the people behind the software and the community around it. I love, love, LOVE Blender. Also, the team behind it is MUCH MORE passionate than the team behind 3dsmax. @@Blender_Inspiration Sure. But my situation is unique, I would venture to say. First, I do all kinds of small jobs. I have a lot of experience in the printing industry, so I offer my services in that area (flyers, business cards, posters, logos, you name it). That's a part of my revenue. Then, I'm a video game developer. Currently developing my first video game (after many tries, that's how it goes). But that's not all: Since I'm very passionate about teaching, and live in a small village where the demand is actually high for this, I teach game development to kids. That includes basic programming, but also 3d modeling as well as music, writing stories, etc. (And although there's no link with 3d, I also teach Jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai to the same kids, to their demand and the parent's demand). Finally, and that's the boring part, I do all kinds of small jobs on the side. That's the "boring" part unfortunately, but it's also the reality of people like me starting up and having to work hard until we get some success in our main passion (which is video game development in my case). So I tend to chickens, cut some wood, do the sugars (meaning maple syrup), but I'm also the pizza maker of the village (you have no idea how good my pizza is, brother) and that's actually a big part of my revenue. In summary, unless you want to work for a company, you have to do all kinds of stuff in order to survive. But personally, that's what I like. I hate being given orders and relying on ONE thing to survive. It makes me anxious. I prefer, like an ecosystem, not to rely on one source of food, but to have options. That's probably not the answer you were looking for, but at the same time, that's the honest answer. You main asset will be your PASSION. If you are not passionate in what you're doing, it's going to be difficult. So my moto is "be positive, do the right thing and be honest". So far, it's working for me. Hope I was able to convey some of that passion in my answer for ya. Also sorry for the potential bad english, I'm in a rush and it's not my native tongue. All the best!

Over a decade exclusively in 3ds MAX here and I agree with him. Max has very old backbones and those are difficult to update to today's coding as it will brake many systems that lean on it. This happens to every program, eventually. It will happen to Blender too. Unless they redo basically everything. It's what is happening to Cry Engine (been for years), and its what happened to many leading programs that have now died. Autodesk is just enjoying the fact that many companies need 3dsMAx, just like the vid said. Updating the low lvl code would cost too much time and money. If you've been working with Max for so long, you must be well familiar with cases where you misclick a wrong button and max will start some crazy operation that would take 3 hours and eventually crash. And there is nothing you can do to stop it but kill the app and reload an autoback. One of many examples of this. It says "press ESC to cancel" which will not do anything. 2024 and its still using 1 core for most of its complex calculations... ahh the list goes on..

I tried blender again this year and it is so much better but still not better than 3ds max in the flow of modeling and UI Design (placement & how easy to find tools, I'm not talking about visual design) BUT, there are many things that blender could do that 3ds max couldn't, right now im working on making animated 3d models into pixel art and 3ds max cant do that, but also previously i was working on a project where i need to explode stuff and make it into small particles scattered everywhere, Blender can't do that! Max is Amazing in many ways. It has lots of things to improve, and to get better. None of the issues are related to the Dev team. More to inner politics and strategy, many make sense from a commecial point of view and many does not make sense at all. I use all the major 3dsoftwares, Max, Maya, C4D and Houdini, and now i am learning Blender. I can cleary see the pros and cons of all of them, the their strenghts in context. I Still LOVE to do Scene Assembly, scene sanitization and organization in Max. I Still model in Max 95% of the time. For 2 Reasons. Because i have used Max for +20yrs and because its GOOD. Stack Modifier has NO contender. Houdini is the only one that has some very close to it. None of those softwares other than Houdini and Max, has a "Edit poly" node, that saves any mesh on it. I am not saying in anyway that this makes Max the best software in any terms. I am loving modeling in Blender, but still fighting with the "need" to have to memorize that many shortcuts. Once you get used i can see it's really powerful. I still do UVs in Maya, just because i like it.

All of them have some great features and some frustrating things. But whenever I'm working on a personal project, I'm always using ds Max because it's the best overall software. And with new releases (especially with 2023 and 2024) they did make HUGE changes and updates. I think people love to "hate" it because Autodesk didn't make a big update for years (from 2014-2020, except Qt integration). I started my career back in 2010-ish doing mods for Bethesda games, and then got some level of renown during the early days of Skyrim modding when everything was so painfully primitive. I knew that I wanted to be a game designer since playing Halo 3 in 07. That was my awakening to the realities of what was possible with games as a work of art. My first software was Blender, so I will always have a soft spot, and bias, toward it as it is the thing I have spent the most hours in. When I went to college in 2016, I was pretty poor, so I couldn't afford an amazing school, so I just went to the local university and stayed home with my parents. They had an okay Computer Science program, as I believed my passion was on the tech side of the industry with only passing interest in the more artistic side. I learned very quickly that my skills were better suited the other way around, due to the CS program at that school having a strict 'no video games will ever be acceptable for assignments, and definitely not senior projects' policy. They believed that video games were a way to trick the user, and not a viable way to show aptitude in programming fundamentals... Yeah, I got conned... But my vehement disagreement with the CS program led to me getting involved with writing and VFX programs elsewhere in the school. As a student, I got to use the computer lab with 3DS Max and Maya for free, and I trained myself in their use at home as well, in addition to the classes I did take which were introductions into their use. I thought 'well, it's what the pros use, so why not?' I am not exaggerating when I say that 3DS Max almost killed any intention I had to be a 3D artist... The legions of unresolved bugs, the reputation of Autodesk as a company, the fact that you almost have to use hardware designed with 3DS Max in mind to have an efficient workflow... I was in that mindset that 'Blender is for amateurs, and nobody uses it for 'real' projects', and that led to complete disillusionment with 3D as an artform. I took a break for years to rediscover myself as a person before jumping off the deep end in 2021 after the pandemic drove me to the brink of insanity, and becoming a freelance game developer using Blender exclusively to model assets. I've never looked back, and right now, I am more committed to my art than I ever have been in my life. I am making an okay living, and I am well on my way to illustrating an artbook of my own now that I have fully invested in high-poly modeling and rendering.

The UV workflow itself is terrible and forces you to use Rizom UVs since no Max plugins can fix the horrible workflow. Maya's UV tools and workflow is awesome out of the box, Blender's UVing workflow is a dream as well so addons just make it better. I started using 3DStudio 2 back in High School. Learned a lot, the hard way. Looking back, it had a crazy workflow (shaper, lofter, modeller, animator). Studio and Studio Max were a revelation in their time. The modifier stack was a great way of working. It was popular with the TV VFX team I worked with at Iloura (before they became Method, and later Framestore). The Film VFX used it to some extent, but the workflow was very Maya. I loved Max, particularly for poly-modelling, and learned a lot about how to push Max from the freakishly talented crew at Iloura - great times and a long time ago. The best of times. 🎉

That's just *Ad Hominem* -- You attacked your opponent's character or personal traits in an attempt to undermine their argument. Ad hominem attacks can take the form of overtly attacking somebody, or more subtly casting doubt on their character or personal attributes as a way to discredit their argument. The result of an ad hom attack can be to undermine someone's case without actually having to engage with it. Example: After Sally presents an eloquent and compelling case for a more equitable taxation system, Sam asks the audience whether we should believe anything from a woman who isn't married, was once arrested, and smells a bit weird. *Strawman* -- You misrepresented someone's argument to make it easier to attack. By exaggerating, misrepresenting, or just completely fabricating someone's argument, it's much easier to present your own position as being reasonable, but this kind of dishonesty serves to undermine honest rational debate. Example: After Will said that we should put more money into health and education, Warren responded by saying that he was surprised that Will hates our country so much that he wants to leave it defenceless by cutting military spending.

People that joined the Max train recently (since a few years) will not understand this, Max got a lot better since a few years. The crashes used to be horrible and stuff as missing. About 10 years ago I swore that I will never ever pay for Max in my life because it has costs me soooo much time and frustration. In fact they have to pay me money for the countless hours that I lost due to crashes... BUT as I said, things are improving so I'm really happy about that.

a max user since 3dsmax 6 , its a wonderful tool ,, buggy yes but still wonderful,, any maxer can learn other tools in a much easier pace,,,as mentioned its is one the difficult tool to learn,, people who have gone through that definitely find learning other such tools much easier,, and it seems most of the complaints are from blender and maya users,... blender and maya are more artist friendly,,, whereas max is much more robust and is more on the tech side... you want interactivity , virtual reality, augmented reality , architecture, vfx anything max can do that,,, yeah it has certain bugs and crashes often... since i use most of the 3d softwares i can assure you every single software crashes at somepoint,.... i use blender for my projects heavily ,, blender 2.8 crashed suddenly and wouldnt open at all.. ever since i dont install blender i just use the zip file and run the software each time...even that crashes on the first time and then runs only after 2-3 attempts... so any software will just crash for no reason.... i personally find max's modelling toolsets much much versatile and faster... yeah blender has sculpting but it still has a long way to go ... yeah max's material nodes are outdated ... but still its my first tool to go for any work based on 3d... can it do what houdini does ,, no it cannot on its own but definitely with plugins..

Stepping out of my comfort zone and learning alternatives have made me realize that there are other softwares that are more optimized for certain things. For example: Unreal Engine 5 has made it much easier for me to throw an animation together in a week, and Blender's interface has just been simpler for me to use with reduces time.

That said, I switched to Blender since I don't approve of Autodesk's business model where, just as MS used to do, they do changes just for the sake of it and force people to buy courses. It's disgusting. The sub model though, is how Adobe does it as well.

I've used it from the begining, as a student in the UK. I got 3D studion dos, went to college and got to use 3DS 1. I remember going to a convention there and they were giving out proper CD's and Brochures of the first Blender (might have been a beta version even). This is around the time Softimage was first ported to the PC. I had a Dual Pentium Pro with Matrox Millenium graphics card. Was the only consumer card that did OGL viewports well. After college I spent about 20 years doing game dev and medical training simulators. I stopped doing 3D in 2015. Got a 3D printer during the last holidays. Tried 3DS Max, and it took maybe a day to get a lot of things back to speed. It's great for creating 3D models for printing, the real world design tools mixed with visual modeling tools is still really good. You can use it for artistic or practical models with real measurements. Very quick and easy to use. Honestly though, I was surprised how little it changed in 10 years. Surprised it doesn't have more Zbrush like features, what is there is a bit basic.

I use 3DS since 25 years, I began with 3DStudio 3 (DOS). This is why I don't swap with an other tool. But if I compare it with a zero cost tool like Blender, there is no reason for a young 3d artist to buy this software. The renderer if too complex and some tasks are too time expansive. Max user since 1996 (v1). What I love about Max is it makes easy things easy. What I hate about Max is that once Autodesk bought Maya, they made sure to not make it possible to do hard things easily, like C4D or Maya might do. They stopped innovating about 20 years ago. Whenever they add a new feature, it's broken or lacking functions that would make it truly useful. That being said, tyFlow has breathed new life into the software, and made it relevant again for complex organic work. Hey, Autodesk, you suck so hard. If I accidently ran over your puppy with my car, I'd throw it in reverse and hit it again a few times. If for some reason the reverse gear in my car was broken, I'd get out, go to the front of the car, and push it over your puppy again. If for some reason I had a bad back and couldn't do that, I'd hire a few strong guys to travel with me wherever I went, in the off chance I'd happen to run over your puppy and need help pushing the car back over it again.

I dont think its acceptable, considering most other softwares open in a minute or a bit more. -unintuitve: you need tons of mileage with these software, and when youre just starting out, you cant find anything. Nothing worse than acctidentally closing a rollout or some tool and having to go to google to find it after 15 minutes. -corrupted files: luckily it didnt happen too much to me, but my classmates and even teachers lost hours of work because the software crashed or corrupted a file. -animation bar: yeah, i get it, 3ds max can be used for animation, but why cant i just remove the bar from below? it takes 1/4 of the viewport and i dont use it at all.

Firstly... 9:49 Jonah 😂 I work as a director and editor for BBC News in the UK. The company struggles from the same issue. *Pipelines locked into 10-20yr old tools*. Because the organisation is so large there's no way to overhaul this.. For instance: In the UK there are 12 regional news stations. Roughly talking around 150 to 300 staff members across each site. The cost of training these people to use new tools would be bonkers. On top of that the company has spent so much money over those years managing these tools (annual licenses, repair and development etc), moving towards a tool which admittedly could increase production time/costs is a political conversation more than any other. Therefore free (or cheaper) products such as Unreal & Blender aren't "cheap" at all. An absolute no go for a publicly licensed company. Thanks for the video essay... certainly got me thinking...

I liked your video. I want to give you my take. I work for Aerospace company in a team of 8 3d Artist. All are over 30 and use 3ds Max, 2 have switched last year to Blender. But they are not anymore productive or produce better work than any other member. The truth is if you know what scripts and plugins to use with Max you can make it how you want it. Blender is huge and works off short cut keys and addons also can be customised to how you want. The real difference why I find I use Max or Maya is because if I have an issue with Max I can contact a SME without leaving the software and have a solution within 2 hours. Full confidentiality! A lot of businesses work in the dark, which means they do not connect to the internet in production teams, Blender as far as I know is not dependable to offer a protective working environment offline. I may move over to Maya completely because of the lack of development in the Character animation area, this I believe is telling in Autodesk's long term strategy, they will let the software die until cancelling it does not have a huge impact on there bottom line.

As someone who uses Houdini every day in a production pipeline... I'm gonna have to disagree with you about it being the best. It is the best for simulations, no doubt, but as the backbone of a pipeline, it is awful and incredibly inefficient. On top of that, there are very few third party tools that get developed for it. While sideFX does do a good job at updating it and adding features, it's core workflow is not efficient. I started with Maya, then switched to Houdini/Blender combo - and after about 5 years of Houdini, I am switching to 3ds Max + Vray. The only thing that comes close to Max + Vray in terms of workflow efficiency, especially for individual artists, is Blender. Blender is fantastic, it just has some minor shortcomings in workflow, especially with scene set up and rendering... though that is mainly due to personal preference.

3ds Max seems like its the best for architectural modeling and rendering.

The only revolutionary software feature recently is the Unreal engine nanite and lumen. You can comfortably make your models, rigging and animation with any of the major softwares like 3ds max, Maya, Blender, Cinema 4d, Houdini,

I bought a lifetime license of Autodesk Products for about 10k USD, one year before they went subscription and stopped supporting my version of the Autodesk Package I bought (essentially stealing my money). I will NEVER trust ANYTHING that company does again. Blender is the way to go, and now with AI , Blender is going to improve a lot faster since it is open source and the new coding bots will allow an incredible amount of innovation in the next several years. Screw Autodesk!

I bought the software some years ago an made very few attempth at getting myself acquainted with it. I much prefer using Blender, which is not only free but many of their addons are also plus the fact that I have the choice of two built-in render engines. 3D max a much more an expensive platform to work with and from a personal viewpoint I find more difficult than Blender .

Blender doesn't know how to export animation formats with textures, what's the point of new functions if it doesn't know how to do basic things!

I'm 3ds max user for about 15 years. Recently switched to Unreal Engine and keep using 3ds max only for modeling. The problem is still that its not possible to have a real-time workflow like in unreal engine, rendering a preview animation from viewport takes ridiculously a lot of time (without even textures), as far it will not be improved 3ds max will stay as linear modeling software, but competitor from other side is houdini with his non-linear modeling workflow. To keep market share in 3d, Autodesk should invent something really exciting, like AI modeling software or something with real-time workflow, otherwise these small improvements just a temporary solution, since soon or late users would switch to Blender + Unreal workflow and its already happening.

Of course you can have real-time work flow when animating. I know you're talking real-time rendering and I don't blame you for going to Unreal for that, but just want to distinguish the two meanings. As far as non-linear modeling this is what Max is all about in the stack and more recent boolean and array advancements take it further. Not saying Blender isn't there, albeit with less polish, and indeed Blender will pass it at this rate. I'm a fan of both.
