If you need to do flattening on a budget juste tape some sandpaper on a flat surface and voila. The flat surface can be your electrical/induction top stove, a piece of flat floor tile, a piece glass like a mirror or simply a piece of mdf. Just be sure that this flat surface is well suported so you don't break it and be sure to clean thoroughly afterward.

I use a sheet of glass with tape on the ends so i dont cut myself. I then sprinkle 80 grit silicon carbon with a few ml of water. Pencil mark the stone and grind until all of the markings are gone. Great video, as always! I recently got the cheap 20$ flattening plate with the plastic base. Small mistake. Have not used it so far. But, to me, and out of the box, this thing does not seem to have a lot of flex. Admitted, it feels cheap, but putting this thing on a mat or whatever on a table, I do not see this bendig in a signifcant way. Still I agree, a cheap 20$ sharpening stone, or a proper diamond plate at 100$ is the way to go.

It's been shown many times that you absolutely can get amazing results with very little. There is a Murray Carter video where he sharpens a fixed blade on a King combo stone and strops on raw newspaper then shaves his face all in one take. This channel has shown similar results whittling hair only using diamond stones in videos a year or two ago. The catch is usually that the cheaper you go, the more your technique and understanding is going to matter. To your specific question, those types of compounds generally have a wide range of grits in them so fine pressure control helps minimise the impact of the larger grits. Todd, from Science of Sharp, has studied heaps of these with SEM imaging, his results can all be found on his website. I belive his conclusion was that any cheap polish or stropping compound is best used on a fabric strop so that the larger particles fall into the weave. As far as grit material goes, diamond or hard particles will work faster, but even softer particles will refine an edge, it just takes longer. I think most people have seen photos of worn stone steps in monasteries from leather soled monks over hundreds of years (or tourists maybe.) Literally anything will work eventually, it's just a matter of what is practical and how long you can maintain good technique. There are so many factors in sharpening that it's impossible to give a blanket statement to anything. But most times, it's going to come to the geometry of the blade (both at macro and micro scales) which is controlled by your knowledge/technique and the steel/heat treatment which in turn is going to influence each blades ideal geometry and sharpness "ceiling". Stropping compound has very little influence over this and anyone saying that it's going to have any significant effect on your results doesn't really know what they're talking about.
@twatmunro2 ай бұрын
I used Autosol for years. It works fine. As others have said, it doesn't cut as quickly or as consistently as a good diamond compound, but it costs £5 a tube as opposed to £30 a tube for Stroppy Stuff. I did find the Veritas green compound was better (cut faster, got me a real mirror polish) than Autosol, but that's about twice the price of Autosol.

Just a few things i'd like to add: the SSATC stone is sold in a 200/600 grit format for more heavy work you can buy cheap 80 grit full sized plates for around 10$(these are only the plate, so they need a backing plate of some sort.), then glue it to a piece of float glass, or the back of one of your stones and use it like that. Flattening stuff like a shappro 120 is a pain in the ass even with an atoma 140, but the 80 grit cheap plates just eat it for breakfast.

I asked for a cheap solution to flatten my water stones In the Dictum shop in Munich and they gave me the advise to buy a flat (polished) granite stone (39€) and sanding grid with silicium carbide (7€). Dictum sells it both in their shop of course. I tried it out and I could flatten 4 sides of my water stones with one sanding grid. Cheaper and bigger sanding grids are available. My experience with a cheap diamond stone was as worse as yours. Two metal plates glued to a piece of plastic - one side cupped one side bowed. An alternatve might be to buy just the diamond plate (maybe two of them (20€)) and glue them to the granite stone. I didn't try that, but I think it could be the best solution for the money. Next question is, which adhesive is strong enough to hold the metal plates, but can be removed when the plates are worn out?

Ive seen a bunch of these $20 diamond stones (from different manufacturers) and they are all about the same quality. Maybe the grit is slightly different but they are all in the same range. Like I say in this video, with these cheap stones you really never know exactly what your getting. Thanks my friend 🙏👍

The 20 dollar 10x3 inch DMD brand plates with the non magnetic attachment and the aluminum tube body of the two plates is rigid and straight. The grit contamination is definitely there but it's not terrible and the 150/180 or 180/400 make for excellent cheap flattening stones and while they don't last super long in the sub 400 grits they are worth the money for a cheap flattening stone or very course reprofiling stones. Like I said the super course grits don't last super long but they last ok the 400 and up seem to last pretty decently and while the grit contamination is there it isn't terrible. It's a 20 dollar two sided 10x3 plate so you shouldnt expect much from it anyhow but the performance is actually much better than I expected for 10 dollars a grit on a large plate with decent electroplating quality and plenty of diamond on the surface with mild grit contamination.

She might have lived in Japan, but that kit looks to be based around one of those awful Chinese whetstones that Alex recommends against.

pick up some silicon carbide powder also known as rock polishing grit and check if theres a nearby granite countertop manufacturer. Ask them if they have any decent sized scrap pieces or just but a 1 foot x 1 foot granite tile. a sheet of glass also works.
