If you need to do flattening on a budget juste tape some sandpaper on a flat surface and voila. The flat surface can be your electrical/induction top stove, a piece of flat floor tile, a piece glass like a mirror or simply a piece of mdf. Just be sure that this flat surface is well suported so you don't break it and be sure to clean thoroughly afterward.

No stone that I'm aware of will wreck a diamond stone. You obviously can't flatten a plated stone. Other than that they will flatten bonded diamond, ceramic of all kinds, aluminum oxide, and natural no problems.

@@OUTDOORS55 I met. Haidu stones are so hard, that they made some bald spots in my cheapo diamond plate 😅 Actually I had to flatten those stones extensively as they are slightly bent. Haidu does not take care of the stone shape as much as e.g. a japanese factory, but I think that the stones can sharpen well.

I use a sheet of glass with tape on the ends so i dont cut myself. I then sprinkle 80 grit silicon carbon with a few ml of water. Pencil mark the stone and grind until all of the markings are gone. In the case the glass goes untrue, but another piece for $5. Edge pro does the same technique with their stones and it works. Any rough texture from the grit is quickly removed during knife sharpening.

Great video, as always! I recently got the cheap 20$ flattening plate with the plastic base. Small mistake. Have not used it so far. But, to me, and out of the box, this thing does not seem to have a lot of flex. Admitted, it feels cheap, but putting this thing on a mat or whatever on a table, I do not see this bendig in a signifcant way. Still I agree, a cheap 20$ sharpening stone, or a proper diamond plate at 100$ is the way to go.

It's been shown many times that you absolutely can get amazing results with very little. There is a Murray Carter video where he sharpens a fixed blade on a King combo stone and strops on raw newspaper then shaves his face all in one take. This channel has shown similar results whittling hair only using diamond stones in videos a year or two ago. The catch is usually that the cheaper you go, the more your technique and understanding is going to matter. To your specific question, those types of compounds generally have a wide range of grits in them so fine pressure control helps minimise the impact of the larger grits. Todd, from Science of Sharp, has studied heaps of these with SEM imaging, his results can all be found on his website. I belive his conclusion was that any cheap polish or stropping compound is best used on a fabric strop so that the larger particles fall into the weave. As far as grit material goes, diamond or hard particles will work faster, but even softer particles will refine an edge, it just takes longer. I think most people have seen photos of worn stone steps in monasteries from leather soled monks over hundreds of years (or tourists maybe.) Literally anything will work eventually, it's just a matter of what is practical and how long you can maintain good technique. There are so many factors in sharpening that it's impossible to give a blanket statement to anything. But most times, it's going to come to the geometry of the blade (both at macro and micro scales) which is controlled by your knowledge/technique and the steel/heat treatment which in turn is going to influence each blades ideal geometry and sharpness "ceiling". Stropping compound has very little influence over this and anyone saying that it's going to have any significant effect on your results doesn't really know what they're talking about.

I used Autosol for years. It works fine. As others have said, it doesn't cut as quickly or as consistently as a good diamond compound, but it costs £5 a tube as opposed to £30 a tube for Stroppy Stuff. I did find the Veritas green compound was better (cut faster, got me a real mirror polish) than Autosol, but that's about twice the price of Autosol.

Just a few things i'd like to add: the SSATC stone is sold in a 200/600 grit format for more heavy work you can buy cheap 80 grit full sized plates for around 10$(these are only the plate, so they need a backing plate of some sort.), then glue it to a piece of float glass, or the back of one of your stones and use it like that. Flattening stuff like a shappro 120 is a pain in the ass even with an atoma 140, but the 80 grit cheap plates just eat it for breakfast.

I asked for a cheap solution to flatten my water stones In the Dictum shop in Munich and they gave me the advise to buy a flat (polished) granite stone (39€) and sanding grid with silicium carbide (7€). Dictum sells it both in their shop of course. I tried it out and I could flatten 4 sides of my water stones with one sanding grid. Cheaper and bigger sanding grids are available. My experience with a cheap diamond stone was as worse as yours. Two metal plates glued to a piece of plastic - one side cupped one side bowed. An alternatve might be to buy just the diamond plate (maybe two of them (20€)) and glue them to the granite stone. I didn't try that, but I think it could be the best solution for the money. Next question is, which adhesive is strong enough to hold the metal plates, but can be removed when the plates are worn out?

I normally use a concrete block and medium grit grog from broken mugs (obviously harder than steel) for flattening whetstones. If it's an oilstone or Arkansas, then I will flatten with motor oil. Everyone knows that oil doesn't dry. While oil may be dirty, it helps get the job done of flattening oilstones.

DUDE HERE IS MY 2 CENTS. Upon your recommendation I've bought about 18 of these stones now, and given them to everyone I know because the first 2 I bought were perfect. Fast forward to today, I have 3 of the ssatc stones that are warped not length ways but across the width. To the point you have to angle the knife on the stone to touch the center, I would guess several thousandths which I guess wouldn't be an issue with a smaller blade. Having said that I still buy and recommend them.

Ohh I know that & wasn't suggesting doing that.... I was looking at the total amount of time to square/level this stone & thought you could pay to have it done? I know nothing about cost of having the stone run thru a machine shop mill but I was saying perhaps your hours are more valuable than to do this for hours? I see it w/ engines being rebuilt where a guy want to level the heads of an engine & sure he can do it by hand, but is that the best use of his time? Hey Alex, I hope you're well in health, wealth & happiness. You mentioned & linked in the description that you were using the cheap $20 S SATC diamond stone in the video (I have one of those as a profiling stone, it works well) but it's a 300/1000 grit you're showing with a different pattern than the 400/1000 grit honey-comb on the S-SATC stone. What stone are you actually showing in the video? (you also have a habit of telling me to say something 10x fast in your videos LOL) Thanks for all the sharpening tips, you've helped me learn so much from stropping to sharpening on a high quality diamond stone. I believe the ssatc stone has been changed several times over the last couple years. I have one of the first ones they sold in a different grit, and i have a newer one (the one in my review video). They also sell a coarser version some earlier comments in this video mentioned, but isnt available to me. Essentially what they are doing is branding stones from different manufacturers. Ive seen a bunch of these $20 diamond stones (from different manufacturers) and they are all about the same quality. Maybe the grit is slightly different but they are all in the same range. Like I say in this video, with these cheap stones you really never know exactly what your getting. Thanks my friend 🙏👍

@@OUTDOORS55 Very interesting! I only recently bought the S SATC to test; I got the honey-comb 400/1000 grit design. I'm sure you're right & they have both variants floating around to be sold with minor, if any, real changes in grit size... In a video, you mention the grit contam basically makes it a 400/400 stone so I mostly use it to re-profile. The Sharpal 325/1200 has been great to me alone, it's comparative to Atoma! The 20 dollar 10x3 inch DMD brand plates with the non magnetic attachment and the aluminum tube body of the two plates is rigid and straight. The grit contamination is definitely there but it's not terrible and the 150/180 or 180/400 make for excellent cheap flattening stones and while they don't last super long in the sub 400 grits they are worth the money for a cheap flattening stone or very course reprofiling stones. Like I said the super course grits don't last super long but they last ok the 400 and up seem to last pretty decently and while the grit contamination is there it isn't terrible. It's a 20 dollar two sided 10x3 plate so you shouldnt expect much from it anyhow but the performance is actually much better than I expected for 10 dollars a grit on a large plate with decent electroplating quality and plenty of diamond on the surface with mild grit contamination.

Hoping someone can answer this for me: in the instruction for the SATC diamond stone, it says to use a perfectly smooth piece of steel to rub across both sides to remove any stray grit. My question is: does the type of steel matter? And are there any sources for steel that is flat like that? I just did not know if they had a ready made product for this purpose (I only found the flattening stones like in this video, nothing smooth), or if I just need to go to McMaster-Carr and buy a block of stainless steel and that will be fine.

(this might not matter as much for freehand sharpening, but it's super important when using angle maintaining and measuring tools that use table top as the reference plane)

you must've meant aluminium oxide. that works, but it wears out way too quickly. not good.

Glue the flattening sheet to a mirror (flat) and then glue it to a piece of wood and then glue it to the bottom of your trash can and order one online

Wait... So is it a sharpening stone.. or a flattening stone??? You seem to be interchanging the terms.. you said one, then the other right after. When talking about THE SAME PLATE

I'm about to say something extremely controversial. You don't have to flatten your stones.

Wait a minute. I thought all a flattening stone was were those dark colored lava like "stones" with large gaps. Sorry for being horroble at painting a proper picture of what im talking about.

Those are dedicated flattening stones. You can use those but you can also use anything else thats flat and abbrasive. Like silicon carbide powder on a sheet of glass, a plain old diamond stone (assuming its courser grit than the stone you're tying to flatten) or even some concrete on the sidewalk.

@@westcoastwarriorsarchive7929 that's pretty cool I didn't realize that. I mostly use the DMT dia-sharp stones but I have 2 shapton spash stones I've never really used. I think I'm just nervous about trying them after finally getting good with the diamond Stones and I also don't want to screw them up when I do decide to flatten my shaptons. I'm just an over thinker 😆😎

Oh, recently your videos are always grabbed by ads for Matsato "Japanese" knife for all purposes... Perhaps worth a review? (And I hope mentioning their name here will positively affect your monetization haha) It looks very gimmicky and too beefy and short for an all-purpose chef's knife, while I would be worried hitting the spine with wood to split a lot. I'm mostly using the Morakniv that you advised a couple of years ago, and aside from a couple of new scars because it'll cut your fingers just by looking at it, I have only had great experiences with it...

That Matsato looks very much like a Huusk knife -- I guess they're hiding their name because of all the terrible reviews. Google it. Worst knife ever made.

pick up some silicon carbide powder also known as rock polishing grit and check if theres a nearby granite countertop manufacturer. Ask them if they have any decent sized scrap pieces or just but a 1 foot x 1 foot granite tile. a sheet of glass also works.
