I'm pretty sure there are a few guys on forums with 300k mile L322s. There are (at the time of writing) over 500 L322s on Autotrader, over half have done more than 100,000 miles. If people didn't want to drive them, they wouldn't repair them and keep putting the miles on! Like Matt says on @High Peak Autos - buy the car you like, drive it and fix it when it breaks.

Absolutely nothing to worry about Lucy, as you know I'm on my 4th L322. The RR has gone lop sided and sagged for 2 reasons. The car has been left for 2 days on a none level gravel drive so in that period it will automatically lose we're it's supposed to sit suspension wise, (just RR for ya) secondly when you open the door without the key the compressor is automatically initiated, yours is probably the original one in the boot so will be lazy now due to age, I just cleaned mine when it did this no issues since or easy replacement off eBay and easy to fit. I would suggest a mobile EAS unit I carry one on the glove box as a back up £50 off ebay absolute must you just plug it in the diagnostic port and it clears all eas abs codes then does factory reset and off you go. Hope this helps. It's just my advice to you there's plenty on here with good knowledge All the best

2004 Discovery 2 TD5, 220,000 miles still going strong! Big diesels that have been subject to regular engine oil changes can easily go on to 300k. You'll find the rest of the car and the engines ancillary units will start to let you down before the engine does. Spray your airbags and the connectors on top with a soapy water spray to check for tiny air leaks, may need a good clean first :)

Although the air system feels complicated it’s actually pretty straight forward, put it into off road height, pull the fuse for the air and see where it drops over night 1 corner = a bag front/rear could be valve blocks , overall is probably air tank leak or or air pump failing, also look at things like the xlifter for a higher ride height at speed that still lets you adjust to access :)

I have a 2009 3.6 Tdv8 Westminster currently at 144k, I bought it last year from Sterling car's in Reading aka "Cars with no reserve reading" on ebay. I think I paid about £7.5K. I've so far replaced the front upper and lower control arms, serviced it, new battery, changed the gearbox filter and oil, changed the front and rear differential oil. New/second hand upper tailgate re-sprayed and fitted. When I bought it the air-conditioning didn't work so a friend did a full re-gas for £60. Fitted General Grabber AT3 275, 55 ,20's tyres. I've just blanked of the EGR valves, best thing I've done so far as it was rough idling when cold and now it's running sweet, I've had no EML come up so far. I'm going to service the compressor with a service kit, as it sometimes runs a bit slow. I ve got 20mm spacers to fit plus 2" lift kit to fit. Also I've got to change the torque converter oil, plus another change of the gearbox oil as it had never been done since last year, and you can never drain all the oil out of the gearbox in one go unless you flush it, but some people say that can cause more problems. (done all the work myself apart from the re-spray & I'm not a mechanic) if you guys need any help I only live in Brighton. 👍🏼

I have face lift 2010 l322 3.6 tdv8 on 78k faults I have had top 2 x turbo inlet hoses fail, this is a common on fault, alternator fail - another common fault due to current draw on electrical system, battery as was 5 years old , L shape inlet pipe/hose on driver side inlet manifold and osr height sensor fail, VDS (variable dampening suspension) on nsf and Osf struts go, this has been temp repaired previously by original owner, the wires become brittle due to heating and cooling and break. But Land Rover do a modified loom for VDS on front Struts. When my height sensors failed it, went onto bump stops, then extended off road mode when driven. OSR sensors replaced, suspension calibrated job done. It’s a 12 year old car, it’s a Range Rover, I do get Range Rover anxiety but it enjoy the drive. Newer cars just don’t cut it, they all look the same and build quality is poor. These still have some class about them and don’t look out of place in the country side or outside a swanky restaurant or hotel. Well looked after examples are becoming harder to find. Religious servicing and quality parts and fluids is the key. Thanks for the video updates.

From a fellow owner of an L322 (and many other 4x4 vehicles) I would recommend against larger or more aggressive tread for a number of reasons. 1. Decreased on road performance 2. Decreased fuel economy 3. Worse ride 4. With a decent set of all seasons like the latest pirelli scorpion Verde tires you still have more off road performance than most any other vehicle. 5. They're likely more expensive too. Unless you're doing really serious off reading, more aggressive tires are a no go as far as I'm concerned. Yes the RR will have a few more repair bills, but what else will drive and look that good? I think it's a keeper for sure. Spend a little each year to keep it in excellent condition and love it all the day. Also, with access height mode hold the down arrow for 3 seconds and it will lock in access mode. Just don't drive over 20ish mph (fast for a garage) and it won't raise on its own.

When changing the tyres, don't put big chunky ones on. They are noisey, use more fuel and don't grip as well when driving on tarmac. I have allways used Pirelli Scorpion XL tyres marked m+s. Nice and quiet and stable on the road, and I have not been stuck on a muddy track yet. They also do a Pirelli Scorpion Verde but this is more of a road biased tyre and seems to be fitted to a lot of Range Rovers now from new. The best modification I have made to my 2005 l322 4.2 sc is to fit deployable side steps. Car looks much better getting rid of the big fixed chunky steps. £2000 option when new, I bought mine from land-rover dealer in Chester for £250 about 4 years ago as they were looking to off load some new old stock

if you leave it parked and it lowers overnight or after a few days, then its a leaking air bag in one of the four air bags, if it sunk and did not raise up the way yours has then that would be a bad compressor pump, i had the same issue on my 2011 lr322. at 7;16.. its adjusting itself because there is a faulty airbag and its compensating by pumping more air into the faulty airbag, that or you have a leak in one of the pipes feeding air to the suspension, thing is if you dont get that sorted out then the pump will start to over work by constantly pumping and adjusting, that will make it overheat and fail as well, then you will have to deal with replacing the pump as well as the faulty airbag or the leaking compressor line. its an easy replacement fix for both,. you either sort this one issue now or both later on.
@shaunbava18012 жыл бұрын
Air shocks could be leaking, if it's dropping like that within a day it might be a bit much, if you don't drive it for 2-3 days that's normal for an old Land Rover mine's been like that for the last 5 years no issues yet. The thing to look for is the EAS compressor running often while driving, if that happens you'll burn out the compressor and a new one is like 700. The other thing to try is calibrating the height sensors, when those get out of whack the car levels is weird ways especially if you are parked in access mode, it will also let you know if you have bad sensors, with age they can go bad at off road height and access mode but seem ok in regular mode. Air suspension in this generation of LR is good, it's just when it breaks it is expensive. As others have indicated the key is maintenance, if your LR specialist says it needs new bags, valve blocks, etc it's much cheaper to do maintenance preventatively than to allow the compressor to burn out. An ounce of maintenance is worth a pound of cure on these Range Rovers. If you don't stay on them it costs you, even suspension bits, failed sway bar links or bushings put strain on other suspension parts people let it go too long and the next thing you know you need to redo the entire suspension. I've had mine for 15 years and really so far nothing major just the ordinary maintenance and suspension bits probably a few more issues than a Toyota but really not that many. The cars get a bad reputation because LR quality control is terrible and some new cars are atrocious with the issues they have. Also certain models have certain known issues and LR never corrects the issue, they sell years of cars they know are defective but since it will survive the warranty they don't care like the 5L petrol with it's timing chains or the ingenium 2L diesel which is just a ticking time bomb or the 3L TDV6 which spins bearings and snaps cranks. If you have a "good car", no QC issues with one of the more reliable power plants(anything that is 4.4L seems ok) they are not any better or worse than most cars.

You remind me of how I was when I first got mine; I had a spell where I’d get into the car and be like “ what’s gonna go wrong today”. The whole air suspension thing…the creaking is cos you’ve got the electric brake on. For the record don’t make the mistake I did, don’t use the handbrake unless you’re on a hill, because I had a new handbrake fitted (£600) and then we got covid & she was on the drive for 2 weeks. The handbrake seized on. Fortunately my mechanic was able to override it via the diagnostic tool, but often it’s drag recovery onto a flatbed & a new handbrake! As far as your air suspension goes, if you’re parked on even a slightly uneven surface it will try to correct. For example if u leave it parked in O-R mode you’ll get “dying swan” at some point (nose dive) 😂 which freaked the crap out of me the first time. After 2 years of ownership I’m now on my 2nd L322 shape sport. Once you’ve had one you won’t go back. As for reliability, get yourself a good specialist, and if you look after her she’ll look after you.

If its dropping slightly over a couple of days you have a slight air leak, nothing to worry about at this stage. Old air bags do leak as rubber corrodes, might be an air line connector. Expensive if Land Rover do it, but not too difficult to do yourself, depending on your skill levels.
@JohnBaxendale2 жыл бұрын
It would generally drop equally as it tries to level itself every so often. You really need to pull the fuses to stop that happening to be able to tell which of the air bags (if any) are actually leaking.
@trainman6652 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't be dropping like that. If you ignore it it leads to further damage as you are driving around with a leaking system.

@@trainman665 the only other damage it will do, is make the leak worse. The worst that will happen is you end up driving with the suspension on the bump stops. It quite common for an air bag to leak slightly when they get old and start to perish

@@yankeedoodle880 Wrong. It causes more and more strain on the compressor. They eventually burn out, and then you have no suspension whatsoever. I then had a 2012 vogue 4.4 bought 2 yrs old and had a starter motor issue but was thankfully at home and got it going and drove to dealer to get replaced. It did have the rotary gear selector that got stuck in drive and I knocked engine off and had to be recovered on t recovery truck . This was after 40k miles and had a few messages on dash about reduced power but shut car off and locked it had a coffee and was fine again. So 2 cars over 11 yrs and 190k miles between them were only issues. Have I ever had another car recovered in 30 years ......No. 2 recovery trucks in 11 yrs which could have been 3 with starter motor. They were only issues I had and loved both cars especially the 2012. I love the latest model and can't wiait for full electric model but was I unlucky as all cars have starter motors and alternators. They are not made my range rover and are bosche parts. The raising rotary gear selector was a gimmick that was always prone to fail. Did look good though. You have a leak or a faulty height sensor. The system checks itself every half hour / hour even when parked / not in use and it levels itself. So if you have a leak somwhere and one corner is dropping, the rest of the vehicle will do the same to keep it level. Standard for RR and Discos.
@AJ-yw5zy2 жыл бұрын
If you think there's a leak, spray bottle with washing up liquid / water, get underneath the RR spray around the pipework & air bags, and look for bubbles. But, it might level it self across a non level surface, they do some silly things at times. As others have commented the EAS tool of Ebay will clear a code and get you & up a running.

Dear Lucy. This is Alvaro from Brazil. I have a L322 armoured because this is Brazil... The car is very good, but repair costs are very high, even because parts are in GBPounds. Anyway they say that LR´s has bad reputation. Actually these cars have some isues, but they are like airplanes: You can´t afford to DON´T provide the proper maintenance. It is expensive, but preventive maintenance it´s a lot cheaper then corrective measures. With some money, some luck and a good mechanic, those cars will run forever> cheers!

Hi Lucy. I have a Range Rover Sport L320 with 190000 miles on the clock, I’ve owned my RRS for 12 years and I still love it. Before you go off-road I’d suggest you come to our off-road centre in Milton Keynes it’s an old Land Rover Experience centre and let me show you how to get the best from your L322. 👍
@m4drx2 жыл бұрын
I ran L322’s for over 10 years and now have an L405. You have a leak, hence the dropping overnight. After a certain point of trying to keep level, it will drop all the way down. As your pump will be running periodically to keep it at the right height due to the leak, it will eventually wear out and need rebuilding or replacement, so just have the leak found and fixed. If you want proof of this, disconnect the battery and leave it overnight and you will see how much it drops without the car trying to keep it level. If it doesn’t remain exactly as it was, there is a leak. In terms of creaking/clunking, that’s because you’re changing the height with the handbrake on. The clunk into reverse is due to the moving a little when changing height whilst in Park. When parking for example, if you put it in park on a slope and let go of the brake pedal before putting the handbrake on, it will clunk when you then take it out. If you put the handbrake on first and then put it on P, then it won’t clunk when you engage reverse, providing you release the handbrake after too. Hope that makes sense. These Range Rovers can take a fair amount of maintenance but there is nothing quite like them to drive. Maintain it properly and it will serve you very well. Take it from someone who has 13 cars but wouldn’t daily anything other than a Range.
@JohnBaxendale2 жыл бұрын
The pump doesn't run overnight to keep the car level, it will only release air from the other corners to level the car. So assuming there is a leak in one of the airbags, eventually, the entire car will be on it's bump stops. If the car were dropping one side due to an air leak - why is it not dropping the other side to level off? Surely it's just the car levelling itself due to uneven ground, else both sides would have dropped by a similar amount...
@m4drx2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnBaxendale exactly this but the reason I suggested the battery be disconnected is that it may not be totally obvious if it’s only a small leak. Disconnecting the battery stops it trying to level (by deflating), so you see the problem most easily and clearly with minimal effort and tools.
@JohnBaxendale2 жыл бұрын
@@m4drx Yes, you can also just pull the fuse rather than disconnect the battery. In the video they highlight that only one side of the vehicle is dropping, hence I'm questioning whether it's actually a leak. To me, the fact that only one side of the vehicle is dropping is indicating that it's just levelling itself off. If there were an air leak both sides of the car would level in fairly equal measures. It seems more likely to me that the ground appears level, but isn't, hence the car looks to be uneven but has actually levelled itself off.
@m4drx2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnBaxendale given that she is not that mechanically adept and was looking for a fault code, that we both know won’t appear for this. The battery seemed the most suitable suggestion vs pulling the fuse. I don’t think the issue is it levelling out. In almost a decade of running multiple L322s at the same time for a period, I’ve never known one to self level to the bump stops unless there is a leak. I’ve rebuilt the entire system on my early one and on a friends. Including the rebuilding compressor itself and stripping and replacing all the o rings on the main valve block. Stripping and cleaning crosslink valves and replacing the tank on one which was full of water and failing. The early ones are much less reliable air suspension wise, so I had a fair bit of experience chasing issues with them. The later ones (I ran a 2011 autobiography for 4 years) are much better. This definitely appears to be a leak to me. Most likely a pin hole in a bag or pipe or a push fit connection leaking. Easy to fix.
@JohnBaxendale2 жыл бұрын
@@m4drx You’re not really answering my question though - why is only one side of the car dropping, if it’s a leak? Surely, if it’s a leak, then all four corners would drop equally as the car tries to keep itself level. Doesn’t this just suggest the car is parked on un-even ground and is levelling itself out? I’m fairly sure that pulling a fuse or disconnecting the battery is a good next-step to help diagnose the issue, I’m also fairly sure both are within the skills of the owner.

If the suspension seems to deflate you probably have a leak somewhere in the system and if it seems sluggish raising a new suspension compressor probably wouldn’t hurt generally not too big of a deal
@benfel94032 жыл бұрын
To be fair I have had a Range Rover with air suspension since 2003 and have never had a major suspension issue on any of them. The only high cost comes when someone charges a lot to diagnose the fault and they do not understand the system. Good luck with it. The back / front lifting is in case it is raising at night with the headlights on so it does not blind any oncoming traffic. A slight limp means a leak somewhere, possibly an air spring. In an ideal world do not leave the suspension issue for too long as you will burn out the compressor quicker than normal.

Normal. Mine is usually parked up for a week. Every time I come back, it’s very low to the ground. Now when I park it up, I just lower the suspension before leaving it parked. Also if you park your RR L322 up for a few days to a week without running it, expect battery issues. Invest in a pair of heavy duty jump leads, best investment I made after buying my L322 a couple of years ago 😂

Mine had a slow leak in one airbag and the car self levels itself to match so would drop over night. Mechanic said it's not a huge problem but if left it puts more pressure on the compressor. The creaking is because the handbrake/park brake is still on when raising or lowering.

I wouldn’t have thought 170,000 miles is that high for a 13 year old Range Rover if you factor in average annual mileage most owners do. I know before my parents used to do 12,000 a year each - their jeep Cherokee that they kept for 11 years had 145,000 miles. Serviced on the nail by a specialist for the last six years, it’d still pull 3 tonnes easily, gearbox sweet as a nut, and engine pulled like a train.

I’d go ahead and change all of the shocks, it sounds like they’re on their way out and leaking air. I’d do that soon, so the compressor doesn’t burn out from constantly running to keep air in the shocks.
@JohnBaxendale2 жыл бұрын
The air bags are not "shocks", the shock absorbers are entirely different components. Having a very slow leak is unlikely to burn out the compressor, though that's unlikely to be what this is anyway.
@JDHDBS2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnBaxendale please forgive me for using the wrong term. I’m glad you knew what I meant. I’m speaking from experience, because a slow leak gradually becomes a steadier leak and causes the compressor to run a lot and can cause it burn out from being worked all the time. It could be ride height sensors too.

If you keep noticing the vehicle lean after a few days or a week Lucy it could be a leak in the lines on the side it's always going low on. Sometimes this could put unruly undue pressure stress on the air pump by making it have to come on a lot more. Sometimes a few minutes after the vehicle is shut 📴 (to compensate for air loss when the module is still actively monitoring the system) and could shorten the life span of the pump. If this is your problem hopefully not. If the leaks becomes excessive you will notice it takes a shorter time and the vehicle 🚜 will lean, like one or two days. Again I hope this isn't the case with your gorgeous Range Rover. Hoping for a glitch that's cleared up. Cheers 🥂 mate.

People buy these cars cheap and expect to run them cheaply. It's not a Corsa or a Polo. Like you said, it's an £80k+ car.. and that comes with £80k+ bills. I've just returned from a 4 week trip to Spain - covered approximately 4200 miles without a single issue. I spent nearly £3k on preventative maintenance (and some other bits) before I went because I wanted to make sure all was well. I don't expect to have to pay the same again any time soon and I would have no problem at all jumping in it right now and doing the same trip again... apart from the fuel bill.

The thing is these RR were expensive vehicles so expect some parts to be expensive but to be honest some parts are also just as cheap, its also good to have a friend who's a mechanic or even have a go yourself.
