Jeremy Clarkson Harry Metcalfe Did A Brilliant Video On KZbin 😈

The L322 are very much the Range Rover du jour with Metcalfe and Clarkson constantly plugging them. The late Queen’s versions also nearly always had dual rear window controls on each rear door so she could open both rear windows for the dogs. Plus the seat belt ‘bong’ coded out to drive round Balmoral and Sandringham belt-free.

What’s the source for that? BMW resells their armoured cars. Bullet proof car construction is neither special nor particularly advanced, it’s little more than thick steel bullet proof doors and reinforced panels, floors and roof + ballistic glass. Got my 2011 4.4 tdv8 back in april, ive covered 11k miles in it since (now on 123k miles) - apart from an annoying dpf issue its been completely trouble free. Easily the best car ive ever had and always a joy to drive, even on our potholed country roads. Its also a distinct improvement in every area (apart from looks) on the 3.6 tdv8 i had a couple of years ago. I also have a dark green (beige interior) car first owned by royalty - His Highness The Aga Khan. The car is a RHD 2002 Audi A8L finished in Aga Khan Green. As well as having many exclusive touches, what sets the car apart from other D2 long-wheelbases is the fact that it's got a factory-fitted S8 engine installed. Possibly the only S8 engine installed into a LWB D2 by Audi themselves. The car cost over £90k in 2002 and the engine swap at birth cost over £12k alone.

I own five of these, one of them just like the Queen's. When you can keep their electronics sorted out, I am repeatedly surprised at how well they can negotiate thin rural trails across uneven pastures, and then return you back home at the proverbial 'ton' on the highway:) With all their faults, when operating as intended, they turn out to be surprisingly comfortable and capable bits of kit. However, like the Queen did, I much regret the lend of the manual versions. (You know she drove, I believe, stick shift heavy ambulances during the War, what a magnificent monarch she was:)

Prior to the gentleman I bought it from, it had had one previous owner; who bought it new to compete in the Monte Carlo Rally as a private entry. (Something one could do back then). After performing quite well, it was used by it owner daily from his home in Mayfair, London. I had been privileged to meet the original owner many times at shows and club meets. I think that was a lucky find, and it was certainly a lovely car. From the Monte Carlo to Mayfair _ quite a life. The owner in question? A gentleman by the name of Sir Stirling Moss.

Not widely known, Taplow was the stop used by the queen when she travelled by the royal train. Being presumably unable to get onto the Windsor and Eton line (or couldn’t be bothered), the Queen often alighted at Taplow then got the Range Rover to take her back to Windsor; no police escort, just the queen sat behind the driver and the car doing the short distance on its own.

I did once start to enquire about a Range Rover "classic", but it had a day bed arrangement in the back. Strange modification I thought to myself - all several years before the balloon went up - I made further enquiries, and found out the car had belonged to a certain Jimmy SaEvil (he was pretty pally with the royals too) I never liked the bloke, he had a vibe about him, so chose not to pursue the car further (even with offers of a refurbished back seat etc), as the vibe felt off. This car is obviously going to be sold to a minicab firm - "You'll never guess who's been in the back of this...."

I remember seeing the Queen on a cruise outside Maccy Ds on a Friday night in this Range Rover, she helped me change the wheel on my Ford Fiesta 1.1, unfortunately she didn’t say long as Andrew was constantly calling her asking “when’s mummy back?”

May have been a car drafted in last minute for the event in the pic, and that's why it's not plush and reinforced etc.

The L322 Range Rover is possibly my favourite SUV of all time! Although I will say I much prefer the series 1 and series 2 cars, they just look better imo. Also, a suggestion, if you don't mind: please could you include more static shots or footage just showing the exterior of the car and the whole car? I love the videos as they are and I wouldn't change anything but it would be reeeaallly more nice if I could also just be able to look at the whole car in its entirety (for more than the current 20 or so seconds of cumulative footage/photos).

Great video as always. I wonder if its bereft of usual VIP accessories such as armour plated bodywork and windows etc which would have added significant weight, and made it a bit more challenging for a older slightly built person to drive?
@topleybird2443 Жыл бұрын
By the mid 2000s armour plating tech was probably already good enough for this not to be an issue with a big engine diesel SUV like this. Also with recent-ish safety features like crumple zones and specialised bodywork I’d reckon the regular doors would already be plenty heavy even without the steel plate and aramid fitted ballistic glass.

@@topleybird2443 so what is the reason the beast still have a weight of eight to 10 tons. are you saying they are using old crap, that can be penetrated 10 times more easy then modern armor ?
@topleybird2443 Жыл бұрын
@@Hansen710Because The Beast (I’m assuming you’re referring to the yank presidential limo) has protection requirements that far outstrip most regular armouring guidelines. For one, it’s hermetically sealed from the outside with an air pump system and aircraft-level pressurised doors (which are more like bulkheads), which no other armoured car in the world has.

I nearly bought George Best's E-type from Eagle in 2003. Series 2 coupe, green on green, but not BRG, instead a kind of sick-grass-metallic green.

It was also in Belfast. I put a full fuel system in that car about 2 years ago. Recognised that reg straight away.

That side steps only twice the price to the normal step lol! I know nothing, but cant imagine the Queen using that thin step in high heals or wellies. Or bulky secret service personnel especially in a situation where they'd have to ride on it. That said the normal steps on my Disco can take a beating, yet this morning I saw a Range Rovers that had cracked and bent downwards.

Nice story James. My first car was a British racing green MGA which I sold in order to buy an MGBGT which was owned by the Duke of Westminster. It was painted in Ford blue mink matching the Rolls Royce I am told. Interestingly the chap I sold the MGA to was the Bishop of Chester’s son who was a leftenant in the Royal Navy and he knew of the MGBGT which was apparently driven by Sally Grosvenor. I’ve tried searching for the MG but can’t locate it except that some heathen had repainted it black🙁 Well that’s my “Celebrity”? Story thanks again James.

Good chance this car is a ringer given the differences in spec and the time it spent in Northern Ireland.

I had similar concerns but those rear handles for royal spec cars must be horrifically hard to find surely?
