Okay, so here's a short video briefly explaining what chrome lining is, what it does, the pros and cons, and why it may be right for your specific application.
Just like every other technical video I do, DO NOT take my word as gospel. Do your own research, make your own decisions, do what's best for you, the person behind the gun.

Waaayyyy back in the day when i was a young 11B infantry soldier, all the M16's we were issued had the chrome line bores/barrels. Thousands upon thousands of rounds had been fired though through them. We zeroed them at 25 meters and at the range for qualification engaged pop up targets from 50 meters out to 300 meters. I always held the front site post center mass to a little high out to 300 meters and qualified expert. That in addition to live fire exercises and the weapons probably had God only knows how many rounds before they were replaced.

Thank you for this video! Finally someone that can actually explain what chrome lining is! I'm building my first AR and found this very helpful in choosing which barrel I want. All of the other videos out there just say "get the chrome lined barrel, it's the best", without giving any info on why and what it actually is.

More than a few on here have commented about Melonite coated barrels and how much better they are. Well.... sometimes. They are cheaper and for most shooter, they are fine and the corrosion and galling resistance of the coating is very good. Just stay with the higher end companies, Ballistic Advantage is by far one of the best manufacturers of these. Melanite is a ferritic nitrocarburizing coating, so it Tennifer. Ferritic nitrocarburizing of it's dozens of forms is a combination of heat treatment and coating. It occurs at the 950-1150 degree F range. There lies the problem. At these temp ranges, it's really easy to inadvertently anneal the metal being coated. I've seen it. I build and repair ARs for a living. I have seen more than one coated barrel done incorrectly resulting in annealed steel that dies in less than 5k rounds. The coating doesn't wear out, but the metal in the barrel expands from the repeated exposure to high pressure rifle rounds. This is why the US military doesn't use it. Hard chrome lining doesn't effect the temper of the barrel. No ferritic nitrocarburized barrel will equal or outperform a cold hammer forged (CHF) chrome lined (CL) barrel for longevity, thermal ablation, or minimizing stuck cases. Second point, you can wear out a chrome lined barrel. Most Daniel Defense and FN AR barrels will take in the ballpark of 25,000-30,000 rounds before they look like conduit pipe at the throat and muzzle. The lowest round count I've seen on a shot out DD barrel was 22,000, but it was a special case. The guy drove his AR's harder than anyone I know. DD and FN are the two largest manufacturers of CHF CL AR barrels. You really can't go wrong with investing in one of them.

The chrome lining in a rifle barrel is the same chrome as what's on that breaker bar. The surface prep is different, the plating chemical bath and process is the same.

Great vid man, thanks for not repeating the same 3 or 4 talking points about barrels and chrome lining. I've started getting Melonite or nitrate salt bath barrels. Still hard as chrome but its not a coating, its the surface of the barrel that gets strengthened.

Chrome-lined Barrel vs non chrome-lined Barrel. If you going to do your John Rambo thing military combat training law enforcement tactical definitely get a chrome-lined Barrel a prolonged Barrel life and eliminates the concerns of corrosion but it doesn't mean you don't take care of your firearm. An on Chrome barrel roll will give you better accuracy however you will not have the protective anti-corrosion properties that a chrome-lined Barrel offers for recreational shooting target plinking will be fine however if you could engage in using a certain animal that may be corrosive to the barrel then you might want to rethink and reconsider obtaining a chrome-lined Barrel remember ammunition can also be a concern for a barrels life all the factors would be how much you love your firearm to care for it to lubricate it to maintain a clean it and check it for concerns only you can answer the question. Me personally for my tactical rifle it's always a chrome-lined barrel for my recreational plinker I can go with a budget-friendly non chrome-lined 1 8 1 9 twist I got one on my AR right now and it's over 15 years old and it's just as good as when I first put it in looks new because I care for my firearms. So there you have it my two cents on the subject I hope this gives people perspective

So true about chrome lining extending barrel life I got a type 56 sks that has seen alot of use but the rifling is still strong and the chrome shines.

I own a Ruger AR-556 AR-15. Ruger states that it uses a Cold Hammer-Forged 4140 chrome-moly steel barrel with a matte black oxide finish. They do not specify what the said barrel rifling is lined with. I have called them on several occasions and received different answers on this Q?. Such as, Nitride lined, Melonite lined, and, being it is CHF 4140 chrome-moly barrel, it's chrome lined from the material of the barrel. Is there ANY way you can tell me the TRUTH about how the said barrel rifling IS lined, if any? And, whatever answer you give me, should I look for another barrel if it ISN'T any of the above given answers?

When you get a barrel chrome lined, is that the same as hard chrome or industrial chrome? Can you get an entire barrel hard chromed, instead of just the bore? What are the costs associated with hard chroming vs cheap shiny chrome plating?

I would be surprised if a hammer forged or button barrel had burs in the rifling. And I've heard that cut barrels give the best results as well. Would be awesome to see a test between chrome and non chromes barrels.

If you break-in the barrel before adding the chrome lining, will the accuracy imperfections still exist? The break-in should rid the barrel of any burrs, correct? Nice hat!

The guns used in Europe during the Second World War didn't need chrome lining and those guns still work. However, because of the humidity in the pacific countries including Vietnam, chrome lining was necessary. Everyday people in America don't necessarily need it.

Melonite QPQ/Nitride is for go to war and is superior to chrome liningbin every way. The case depth is much harder and deeper...not to mention it is inside and outside(whole barrel is treated). I have non lined, chrome and melonite and melonite is easiest to clean and will not pit. There are no disadvantages to melonite as long as the barrel rifling is cut properly. Only reason melonite is not used by the military is because chrome lined is the standard and it takes time to change over and they are slow at doing so. Melonite wins by miles in corrosion resistance and lubricity. Go melonite.

you use corrosive ammo? Use soap & water after shooting to clean off corrosion then wipe down with lube to preserve the metal. If you live where there's a lot of humidity then you'll have to regularly wipe it down with Hoppes9 or something

All chrome lined barrels are not created equally. With any barrel (or many other things for that matter) you get what you pay for. I have built ARs with chrome lined barrels for years and easily get sub MOA accuracy with a quality barrel. Experience has taught me that ammunition quality and the overall build of the rifle are much more influential regarding accuracy than the chrome lining. 99% of shooters can't outshoot an ar with the cheapest, worst barrel anyway. Accuracy costs money. A chrome lined shilen barrel is not equivalent to an off brand. Get what works for your purpose balanced with what is in your budget.

Hey man, I am preparing to purchase a Zastava AK-47 M70, and from what I have heard, the barrels are not chrome lined. Would you recommend talking to a local gun smith about possibly getting it chrome lined since AK ammo can be corrosive. Also would the barrel need to be re-milled slightly wider in order to apply the chrome? As you are effectively narrowing the diameter of the barrel? Thank you for any input if you get around to answering this. NOTE: I have also seen a few people talking about nitrided/nitrocarburized barrels being an even better resistant to corrosion than chrome and more durable as well. Any input on this?

Any barrel will wear out if the round count gets high enough.... The average shooter will not experience this though. 5.56, while not a super hot barrel killer, still can eventually erode the throat. A couple of my rifles did this and a simple adjustment to the seating die on the reloading press fixed accuracy issues. Nothing lasts forever and if I shoot them long enough I'll have to rebarrel them simply because the ammo won't clear the mag when loaded for max accuracy with an eroded throat.

If you're talking about steel-cased ammo then it's really up to you, since you won't really have any issues with the bullet traveling down the barrel. I've been told that if you're using a chrome-lined barrel then it's much more reliable when shooting steel-cased ammo, since the resin that is used to coat the cases is much less likely to melt and actually make the case stick to the chamber.
