Google and KZbin has been a big help for me with repairs either someone showed step by step how to properly fix a problem. Or definitely how not to repair a problem.

I have a lot of respect for you guys, your platform, and what your doing for the industry. I do have to say though, the oil burning issue is not isolated to vw/audi. It is not planned obsolescence on the part of the manufacturer entirely. The reason these engines as well as other manufacturers who have been dealing with the same oil usage issues a result of manufacturers attempting to lower friction to help meet unreasonable fuel consumption requirements put in place by government/epa. Can the companies start looking to new tech such as hybrid and electric, sure. But that doesn't happen in the unrealistic time frames those regulations mandated, and allow them to remain competitive with companies that get special regulations as startups to sell their products.

Definitely! Cafe standards are ridiculous these days, and this is for sure a multi brand issue! I think the biggest issue we're seeing here is catastrophic failures before the rust consumes the car.... This is a new development for us!

@@ChangingTheIndustry I live in SE PA in the Philly suburbs, I have not seen a lot of vehicles with major engine failures, before roughly 150k miles unless there was savere lack of maintenance. 1 brand stands out in particular, and they are supposedly facing bankruptcy for a second time in relatively short period of time.

I’m going into work today to handover a car we have LOST £5k on because we said it needed a new engine, but the customer, his finance and third party warranty company wanted us to fix the existing one. We got so far into in that we ended up putting an engine in it anyway at our own cost just to get rid of it. It had taken 6 months to get them to authorise us to investigate the issue properly (but there was no compression and it was suspected timing chain) then it’s dragged out for another 7 months. We said all along it needed an engine. We are hoping that they are going to pay the rest of the bill today. But it sickens me that we are the ones the consumer think are ripping them off?!

Hey Lucas, I agree with you about doing business with Autozone, But the most disturbing thing is that Autozone owns Alldata. And last time I used Alldata they had launched a direct hit-style forum, I just hope that doesn't get funneled down to the part stores to give to the customers.

I know!!! Unfortunately I'm going have to keep using alldata as it's what we're used too and we all like the product BUT we're not active on their community functions.

Techs and service advisors are definitely not on board with trying to get a customer to get a new car. It’s taken money out of our pockets. There’s been many times I’ve lost big jobs because the sale department poached a service customer and got them to trade the car in. Meanwhile my 10 hour ticket is gone.

Gotta love the content, keep it coming guys! At the beginning of this podcast, you mentioned how the service department will jack up the repair price, because this will motivate the client to trade in their used vehicle for a newer one. This couldn’t be further from the truth. As someone who’s worked at the dealership (service) world for over a decade I’ll give my take if you allow. One has to treat every department in a dealership as a “stand-alone” company. The service, parts and sales act as different entities. They couldn’t care less about each other’s operation. The tech, service writer and service director will do their best to repair the vehicle. Service and parts departments will both benefit from this transaction. On the other hand, the sales department will do their best to persuade the owner to trade the vehicle in and buy a new one. There’s zero benefit (except the owner of dealer) for the vehicle which was brought in for repair into service, to get traded in and client buying a new car. The two do not work together well. One is trying to repair your vehicle and the other is trying to trade it in for a newer model. Just my 2 cents.

The argument you were talking about the difference of opinions by other shops/mechanics on how a repair should be carried out, I believe is not malicious or anyone trying to be the hero. What I feel it is, having worked for a wide range of shops, some shops either truly believe that as mechanics we should bandaid fixes to get the customer by at the lowest cost possible know enough to be dangerous to the industry and customer but not enough to represent our industry professionally The last is on occasion reckless jealously with Mal-intent. I have seen a number of "mechanic youtube " personalities who gain followers, some of which are very good at what they do, but their intentions are to throw our industry peers unde the bus and make them out to look like thieves.

I mean, he doesn't know what he doesn’t know. This is 95% of people seeing scams everywhere and you know what? It's the dealer's fault for not explaining it. Its a $20k estimate, give grandma a breakdown, explain it to the son, because if not, they're gonna do their own thinking, and they have no idea how any of this works. The only thing I fault the customer here for is even contemplating selling it without getting a 2nd opinion from a shop that does engine work.

AutoZone and O'Reilly's base the life time warranty on the Idea that after a car started needing repairs you will not keep it more than a year or two I had one pickup on it's 6th lifetime starter.

It's possible they explained it to the mom. But she's very old. She likely forgot or misunderstood. That happened often. But the shop should've written it down on the paper work so anyone who's helping the mom can read it and at least see it was more to the conversation than just telling her to get an engine.

O’Reilley’s “is a second opinion” to this dude? 😂 O’Reiley’s isn’t even worth a first opinion. Not bad mouthing what they do for a living, but just pointing out the glaring discrepancy between a car doctor who fixes underlying cause with necessary intrusive surgery, and a drug store that recommends 2 pills of aspirin in order to determine if the pain is heart burn or a heart attack. Oh and by the way, “if symptoms persist, consult your automotive physician at once.” The amount of nonsense and missinformation this real estate agent turned Mr. Goodwrench is spreading is bordering on slander. If I were the VW dealer, I would haul him into court for his ignorance alone. He should be forced defend his misguided opinion on the matter.

It’s a 2.0 vw motor I’m surprised the timing chain made it that long 😂 😂 Oil consumption well those motor drank oil from the day they were new 🤦‍♂️ Do the timing chain and all new parts keep a check on the oil and drive it.

I'm not sure that we have enough information to properly understand their why. Looking at the plugs? We know it's burning oil, right? Couple that with the start-up rattle? Maybe we should find a tech or advisor from that dealership to come on the show?

Thanks for the morning laugh... You can not fix Stupid... This has been a hemroid to the Automotive Repair industry since these part stores came to town, they claim they do not scan for free to sell parts but we all know all they have done is add to the combat field exper for repair shops . Fast forward now they want repair shops to stop working and walk out and scan and some ask to clear with a 5k dollar Modus, while they gen scan with a 150 dollar or less code reader... If i had a dime for everytime i heard that machine "Scanner" tells you whats wrong and how to fix lol if that statement was true so many of us shop owners could retire way early because its just that simple.... In closing i agree with the hosts here this dealership did not explain the situation correctly to Mom and maybe even the Son here as it looks like he went to that dealership and chewed there ass maybe they were given a second chance to state the true under lying issues....
