I start my prerequisites at a 2 year college in August. Then I'll be transferring to a 4 year college for my BSM then a MSW degree! Social work academic course is very difficult, challenging yet can be boring and definitely not for everyone. It's not like you choose marketing, advertising or bussiness for you degree (with all regards), anyone can, in SW you have to be honest with yourself, feel a deep calling like in ministry because it is very, very hard work. Low incomes in relation to high stress + work burnout syndrome makes this work unattractive. Share your opinions. Work experience. Personal motivations, struggle, etc. Peace. P.S. I am studying Social Work (I started it because of my curiosity).

Tamar C, I can't reply to your comment so I'll just post here. An MSW is the route for working in the NICU as a social worker. I would tell you if you're sure you want to do social work then yes, do your Bachelors on social work! I did mine in Sociology, and while I loved my experience I realized when I was applying for my Masters if I had gotten my BS in social work I would have been ahead in classes and been E to pursue an extended learning option. I'm about to watch your updated video from 2020. I'm a 30 year old male and one of my biggest fears (from a male perspective) is holding my ground in a female dominated cohort and work place. I have strong boundaries about what I believe is the right thing to do for people and situations, and I know this will come into conflict with a feminist point of view on certain aspects. Has anyone worked with men like me and were you able to co-exist and work respectfully together? Ultimately it's important for me not to constantly have to protect my values and steadfast healthy masculinity from being compromised. Hope that makes sense to someone.

Thanks for the video. I first learned what a social worker does (the total micro, mezzo and macro work) in 2012. I wanted to go into the helping field every since 2002. I often thought that an MSW program would be "easier" than a Phd program, but I also understood that burn out can happen since it is draining. Your video has helped me to put off applying for now.

I have a BA in social work. I graduated last year May 2015. I took a year off after I graduated college instead of just going straight to get a masters. Now that a year and a half has passed up, I am thinking Applying to grad school at the end of this year. I am terrified. I worry about the Tests I have to take to get in like GRE or even the tests I have to take during the program or after. I actually want to get my own practice. it took me this long to figure out that that is actually what I want to do now. But this video and some of your other videos you have on this similar topic are very helpful.

You should look into online MSW programs such as ( Boston university , Simmons college , USC etc ) I currently attend Boston universities online MSW program and they did not require a GRE as long as my GPA was a 3.0 and over for my undergrad. MY undergrad GPA was a 3.27 so I was fine. I honestly did not think I would get accepted but I did and so can you. I also graduated for my BA of May 2015 with my BA in human services and took off a year as well. I just started the program in Sept 2016 and so far so good. I hope this is helpful to all.

But whoa thats great. My overall undergrad GPA was a 3.1 in college. And oh man cool. So does it seem managable? Is that online program 2 years as well? Are they legit and certified ? Of course they are legit and certified Hun. Why would I take course that aren't legit or certified then recommend it to others ? Anyhow I attend Boston University School of Social Work online as I stated before. You can visit their website to conduct your own research on the program and you can make that determination on whether or not the program is for you. You just need to conduct your research if you are serious. . Happy this was helpful for you.

Thank you for posting this! I am actually considering going back to get my Masters. However, i am struggling with deciding between getting a masters in Social Work or Counseling. I am wanting to work in the school systems in California and do counseling. I have heard going with a MSW is the best route and not as limiting as a Masters in Counseling. What is your take on this? I am interested in providing therapy but it does seem like MSW is a much broader field. Any feedback would be great!

Hi Tiffany. I'm curious on which path you ended up taking regarding school. I will be getting my BA and then planned on getting my MSW as well and I want to be a counselor/therapist and was told an MSW opens more doors than just a counseling degree/license (LCSW versus LPC) so that is what I am probably going to do since you can still be a counselor with an MSW.

Great Info. Ms. Gabbz, I forwarded to some BSW friends of mine who are considering going to grad school for their MSW. Myself, I start my MSW at USC (So Cal) in 2 weeks. It's Advanced Standing, so I'm only required to do the concentration year (Children & Families) and an internship. You still make it seem difficult, one thing I wanted to add is that if you become a licensed clinical social worker then you can do the therapy with your own practice. How are you doing? About GRE, yeah, funny thing. I'm currently an MSW student in NYU and I've never taken the GRE. I still don't even know what that really is lol. But anywho, great informative video. I think it's always great to get the word about social work, cause on KZbin I get the feeling that our field is just not understood. On my vlog about my student debt situation, I got a lot of comments that were like, "why did you borrow so much money for a liberal arts degree?" Yeah, very weird and ridiculous that so many people think social work is a liberal arts degree lol. It really is one of the most under-appreciated and challenging fields and requires a lot of empathy and expertise. I feel this field needs advocacy itself cause it's so misunderstood and of course, underpaid.

This video was very helpful. I got my BS in human services in December of 2014 and have been out of school working and trying to decide on the next step. I too thought I wanted to go into a PhD or PsyD degree after graduation and then started looking more towards the MSW. I no longer have a strong desire for individual therapy, but rather social policy and advocacy work. FSU has a joint MSW/MPA program and I'm wondering if I should go for that rather than just the MSW...they do have an option for a focus on social policy and leadership.

Yeah, you can definitely make a great living as a social worker. I've met and know a few millionaire LCSWs who are living proof to me and one who has currently taken me under her wing of guidance as I pursue my MSW. It always annoys me how people assume you can't or don't make any money in the field of social services.

Thanks for emphasizing the importance of studying both the micro and macro sides. I'm increasingly interested in the macro/public health side but also want to be able to be a case manager counselor etc. It seems kindof a bummer that the 3 MSW schools in Boston im applying to (BU BC Simmons) all seem to force your hand a bit by either making you concentrate in micro or macro (or in Simmons case, focus nearly exclusively on micro). I'm hoping I can specialize in Macro at BU or BC and still take enough classes to have strong micro competencies. Wonder if people in MSW programs find themselves frustrated by being forced from the start to concentrate on one aspect rather than learn both and and concentrate more on one side in the second year. Part of me wants to return to Chicago ur shoutout to the growing need for social work there making me thing about my old hometown (sentimental sigh)

Great video fam...I'm starting my MSSW in the fall after taking a few years off from school. If anyone else out there is like me and almost dropped out of their undergrad degree they will probably need to take the GRE and submit scores to be admitted into a program lol. All of the programs I applied to required it since my undergrad gpa was subpar...luckily, I took it right after I graduated so I still had scores to submit.

What do you recommend for students starting MSW programs in the fall? I don't know if I should focus on memorizing rules, doing all the reading, studying in groups, highlighting everything in sight, focusing on the field placement over class, etc. I did grad school once and "just being a good person" did not help me get good grades. What things should all students do if they want to hit the ground running in MSW school?

Jeffery Mingo hmmm. good question. Well every program is different. I didn't think my program was based around memorizing facts. It was more about understanding concepts. I think the reading is important, but don't overwhelm yourself with reading every little thing. You gotta master the art of skimming the text, so you can get the main idea. And my school definitely placed a larger emphasis on our internships. As far as studying in groups, I honestly didnt have to do much studying. My programs was more about completing research papers, writing a mock grant proposal, creating a business plan for a non profit organization, etc. I think from the first month, you will get a feel of how your program is structured and what you will need to do to survive it.

Although the CSWE regulates the curriculum and all accredited schools of social work teach the same social work core concepts, school status and names matter. It is true you can get a very good general social work education at any school of social work. However, status and names come to play with regards to the alumni and your professional network. #USCMSW

Thank you so much for this video! I finished my bachelor degree in sociology and psychology in the UK in summer 2014 and working on applications for a counselling-related master's in the US. Your video definitely cleared up some myths! I'm wondering though, like you said many school don't care about GRE much, I do notice that they instead place a great emphasis on working experiences. Are there many mature students in MSW class who come in with loads working experiences on hands? Does it help to take two to three years out and work at non-profit org? I feel that it will help prepare me better for what awaits me in MSW but I am not sure, and this hesitation really drags my application process down. will really appreciate your help! xx

Great you have your undergrad in Sociology! I am wondering if you could tell me the difference between Applied Sociology and Social Work. I don't want to do case files all day, and I certainly do not want to do research as a way of life. My Ideal career choice would be one that help people find and connect to resources, advocate for social change in the system, and counseling.. So basically impacting lives directly and indirectly.

As a social worker, I will not do the work for those who must be responsible for their own healing. Force feeding people never work.

I'll be moving to Chicago and applying for MSW programs for fall2015. I have a lot of research experience in race/ gender and business. I was thinking of doing a mental health/therapy concentration plus infusing personal studies of race and how it affects mental health. I can see you were at UIC I was wondering if there is anyone in the department that I can contact- besides admissions to tell me more about UIC's MSW? My second question is have you heard anything about Evanston or experienced that area? My last question is which concentration of social work did you choose and why? and which has the most job opportunities in Chicago in your opinion? Eventually I may move back to Canada and I can honestly say that the MSW pay is very high in most provinces and the benefits tend to be better as well.

However,I don't have any volunteer experience or references (completing my degree online). What do MSW programs look for in applicants? What would you suggest I do before applying?

Thank you for this video! I'm in the middle of my application process. Im about to graduate with a bachelors in Political Science, So I've been worrying about not having a degree in Psychology. Should I be worried? Do Universities look mostly at GPA? Or do they look at your Resume more? Also, I was told to take a few years off between undergrad and grad school to get more experience, does it matter? Sorry for all the questions!

Yes, but you'll need to obtain a Canadian equivalency meaning an exam. I assume you know more than one language which may be an asset in Canada. I'm not Canadian (but close enough), but you may wish to research social work associations in the province you want to relocate to. There are yearly memberships you can obtain. Also, check with CIC (Canadian immigration) for more info. Good luck!
