One thing that really bothers me is that someone with an addiction to alcohol is shunned, looked down on and avoided...but obese people are given positions in ministry and their issues are ignored, tolerated, and never discussed as addiction, sin, or anything out of the ordinary.

I believe you used obesity as an example - not a disqualifier. It's not a bad point. Some simply do not control their eating habits. Though, alcohol is obviously an emotionally and spiritually altering elimenent that can lead to debauchery and physical abuse of spouse and family. ( And those in bar brawls) As well, no one ever had a deadly head-on collision because they were overweight! And many have thyroid and diabetic disorders. The Apostle Paul had difficulty with eyesight. Moses had difficulty with speech. Neither of which disability remotely compares to alcholism! Regarding Spurgeon. We have no idea about his cigar smoking as to how God saw it. 'Oh. Babe Ruth was a glutton and drinker so, no problem'! Yeh. Players who use that dumb idealism are last picked at picknic softball games. Why do we always choose to adopt the poorer habits of our heroes!

He's not wrong but it has to be said that if a Christian confesses to a friend that he struggles with a runaway tongue that hurts people,he appears humble, but if he confesses to an addiction of some sort he's seen as untrustworthy and very much found lacking.The way we treat brothers and sisters struggling this way needs to change, we need to see each other through Jesus's eyes not our own..

@@tbaby5650 None of us our worthy of heaven first of all. Our salvation depends on what He has done for us, not what we have done. A true believer will repent of the act of drunkenness and try to stop with help, prayer and the power of God's word. I find I a m stronger to get away from the cravings when I am in scripture and prayer everyday. We have to get to a place in our mind and hearts that creates a will that doesn't want it anymore. We won't crave what we don't want. Educate yourself about what the chemical is that we are putting in our bodies and how it affects it. Lacking in the power of the Holy Spirit leaves us desolate. Thank you so much for addressing this question. We mustn't fool ourselves into thinking, believing that, because it's an addiction, God understands and will overlook that "besetting sin". Who/what do I love more? My idol I'm addicted to or my Savior, Jesus Christ? It was so hard to save us! Can we not see what God the Father and God the Son went through for us? Addictions are of Satan. Claim victory by abstaining one minute at a time, from doing the thing that makes us weep at night, makes us cry out to God!! I'm sorry!! Please deliver me!! Save me from myself!! Make me hate this sin enough to give it up, for Christ's sake and for my eternity.

There's a HUGE difference between justification and sanctification...and sanctification is a life long process...and after a lifetime of walking faithfully w/ CHRIST, not one of us will have "arrived," nor be able to stand up to His Measure. Why don't people understand the righteousness of GOD? Because they're still seeking to establish their own. I love this ministry because they emphasize much of the reformed/Biblical teachings of Calvin and Luther, and expose the heresy of Pelagianism, etc. Yet it seems to me how easily we drift away, carried by the currents of our thoughts and explanations...dragged by an undertow of what we really do not see or understand, creating labels and taking pride in our own merits. That in itself, can be an addiction...human nature...a religious spirit. Thank GOD we have hope! He's risen from the dead! AND He will finish what He started-Philippians 1:6. HALLELUJAH! I've walked with Him for quite some time now...and the longer I walk with Him, the more I realize, He alone truly is worthy of glory and honour. 30 years ago I would have said amen to that statement...but would not have understood as I do today. Ephesians 2:8-9. Because of Calvary He has unlimited patience-1st Timothy 1:16-for those who truly Trust & Believe in Him.

He had me 100% until he said "If you can't go to your elder and your church and talk to them about your sin, cause you're afraid, you probably need to find a church where they'll be ready to show you grace...". "Probably" was the wrong word. Many, if not most, who would identify with that condition, feel afraid to do it. But God, in James 5, commands us to go to elders, regardless of fear. If, after going to the elders, you see they are not willing to show grace or address the sin with you, then you can look elsewhere.
@codyh39
@codyh39 4 жыл бұрын
I can almost agree with this but there was a certain inflection in the way that he said "probably" that certainly insinuated that you 'need' to find a different church. I speak the same way and in the same manner of speech which is why I was able to pinpoint his meaning as almost rhetorical. I will grant though that he should have chosen to be more literal and direct during this question, I think he executed the answer QUITE well. However, you are right in that if he was being genuine about saying as a probably and not certainly, there would be a problem.

Practice choosing not fighting. Choose because you can and your sinful nature says, yes but do it anyway. Don't wait for a sign or 3 years of modern church therapy lessons We are sinners, we are the way we are so choose. I'm well aware that it's not comfortable to do what we should in case anyone says, but we can, and we can and we can. We just don't want to, we would rather do wrong. We have to accept the feeling of discomfort in not because it's what will happen every time we are tempted. God bless you family forever, I hope you learn to enjoy choosing right no matter what it costs and ill see you with the Lord regardless

Of course certain sins are worse and more detestable than others, but just one sin no matter the severity would send a person to hell without the forgiveness or mercy and grace of our Savior. The problem is how sincere are you to deal with it, but even with that Paul says the things I want to do I dont do and the things I do not want to do this I keep on doing ! Who will save me from my wretched and wicked ways ? Thanks be to my Savior the Lord Jesus Christ ! In this body or flesh you will battle till Christ comes to restore you. I'm not condoning sin by any means, but I'm also not saying I've arrived and completely free of ever sinning again you would be woefully wrong in thinking you have in this life. Christ is able to help you daily to live by the spirit and not by the flesh which we should crucify daily.

Addiction is a sign of spiritual bondage for sure. Addicts need deliverance or they will and do face judgment it may not always be a sin but it is sinful and leads to the sin of idolatry. How? Well inevitably the will of God will be for a believer to choose righteousness but alas the addiction says otherwise and the addict ends up disobeying grieving the holy spirit being enslaved to the will of the flesh. Pray for and encourage a believer in addiction always giving them hope and reason to fight to be free.

Jesus had all of God's wrath and judgment put upon him, so we could be justified for our sins, and were sealed with the Holy Spirit… Salvation is not by any kind of works whatsoever, or trying to become a better person. Simply put......Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission or forgiveness of sins. Salvation is a one time event, where we are justified and perfect to God, just as righteous and perfect as Jesus is. Hebrews 10....

For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. There are people that would say too her, well your a lukewarm Christian because if you go to church it's because your commanded to blah blah blah She needed love and didn't find it. Modern Christianity judges the Christian by how outwardly spiritual they seem, not the faith of the person.

The apostle Paul had an affliction, a thorn in the flesh that he had begged God to get rid of. The Bible doesn't tell us exactly what it was. It could've been a physical ailment or even an addiction of some kind. Whatever it was, God told him, "my grace is sufficient for you". However, I believe one should never condone sin because it has serious consequences. The Bible is very clear about that.

1:58... Yes, as you say 'truly striving'... The 'good fight of faith' is a war against sin, and every work of the flesh; and 'the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through GOD to the pulling down of strongholds...' (2Cor.10:4-6). Jesus says to sincere believers, 'Strive/fight to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able!' (Luke 13:23,24). Thus, Christ is saying, Yes, few will be saved; those not willing to fight the good fight against sin will be 'thrust out' (Lu.13:24-28) as 'workers of iniquity', for knowing to do good, by faith/belief of the truth, and yet 'doing it not, to him it is sin' (James 4:17). Paul obviously sees it as black and white, 'for whatsoever is not of faith is sin' (Rom.14:22,23, 1Cor.15:33,34). Jesus says, '...the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it' (Lu.16:16).

A believer, can be chastened by the Lord, even to losing our life, and our rewards in heaven, but not our salvation which was paid for by Jesus own blood sacrifice for all sin. Man can do nothing to save himself. And we can do nothing to lose salvation by grace. If we could do one thing that would save us, then Jesus died in vain. We can only be saved by what He did for us, not by anything we do or do not do.

How can a church help you get the help you need. I thought the Holy spirit was your help.Church can't do that for you. That help comes from above not the church
@Panhorst
@Panhorst 4 жыл бұрын
The church is instituted by God and it's very purpose is for a place of healing and restoration. In the scriptures the Apostles warn against people who made it a practice of not going to church because God is love and he has designed the church for a place of mutual edification a place where we all work together through the Holy Spirit different gifts to bring about transformation and this is joined together by Holy Communion. When God sees people being obedient to his command to get together and worship him he begins to do mighty things in the hearts of the people. It is a test. God commands us to get together and worship Him and those who abandon the church and disobey the Lord suffer harm outside of church. Watch out that Satan does not turn your mind away from the fellowship of the family of God. For we know in Scripture God has said to us whoever does not love his brother is a liar and the truth is not in them. Yes the Holy Spirit is the one who renews us daily but we are commanded by God to come together as a family and love one another. There are some circumstances where people cannot come together except for in a basement or in a small group some people cannot come together at all for other reasons and God is able to help them because the Lord never leaves his people who he has given His Spirit. My objective is to help you understand friend it is very important to find a church that loves the Lord and is obedient to the word of God and be a part of that fellowship for your edification and theirs because you are important to the body. The scripture says when all parts of the body are working together and are healthy it builds the whole temple of God up and we are that Temple. Grace and peace

Jesus paid for our sins and once we trust on him, the holy spirit will guide us. We are not meant to live in fear. Read Paul 2 Corinthians 6 For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me. 7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. 8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. 9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

Repent of your sins is not in the bible. We are not to add words to the gospel. Repent means to change your mind from trusting in what we do to save us, to trusting in what Jesus did to save us. John 12:32. Acts 16:31. Salvation by grace is something we receive. Not do. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, physical death, but the GIFT of God is eternal life. We cannot do one thing that would save us. Romans 11:29. For the GIFTs and calling of God are without repentance. Irrevocable. Cannot be changed back. Ephesians 1:13-14 Our guarantee of eternal life. Ephesians 4:30. And grieve not the Holy Spirit in whom ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. The GIFT of God is eternal life. Not a reward for good behavior, but a free gift. s John 6:47. Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that BELIEVETH on me, HATH EVERLASTING LIFE. Jesus said it, we believe it, and that settles it. First John 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. Romans 3:26-28 For He is the JUST and the JUSTIFIER of them that believe in Jesus. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? By the law of works? Nay, but by the law of FAITH. Therefore, we conclude a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. The Law is good, it just cannot save a sinner which we all are. Romans 4:5-8. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on Him that justifieth the ungodly, (all of us) his faith is counted for righteousness. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord imputeth righteousness apart from works. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. Blessed is the man whose sins are covered. The GIFT of God is paid in full. No longer condemned to hell. John 3:18. A one time faith alone in Jesus finished work on the cross alone apart from any works.

There is a call to "be holy for I'AM holy." No one needs to see the movie "Harry Potter" for themselves to know how the movie glorifies all that the Bible speaks out against which is Satan. The movie glorifies Satan. This cannot be denied. We are a royal priesthood. We are to be in the world but not OF the world. We as Christians should be seen as not of the world. We should be distinct and holy because we do not practice those things which the world approves of. This is not legalism. This is an imperative from God. We should not blend in with the world. Our conduct should be so apparently different from the world that non-Christians should immediately identify us with Christ because of the lives we live in holiness. There are very few movies, if any, that anyone could justify seeing, regardless of the rating. Frankly, I would be concerned about anyone who calls himself a christian and justifies seeing even a pg-13 movie because of the dirty language that is so ubiquitous. So many of the movies use our LORDS name in vain. We should not tolerate this by going to the movies which allow this. Because of the themes, even some pg and g movies should be avoided. The call to be holy is no longer preached or even taught because it is unpopular. Maybe people just believe it is unattainable, which of course it is unattainable perfectly in this body, but we are still suppose to strive for it. People don't want to consecrate their entire lives to Christ anymore, only a portion. But that is not a truly consecrated life we are to live if we only give part of our life. I called this man into question because of his public statement he made and the apparent position he holds. It is not "ok" to publically make statements that disparge the name of Christ through our actions. Pastors and teachers are held to a higher standard which is readily apparent throughout the Pauline epistles. Christians in positions of authority are placed there to be examples so we may learn how we are to glorify Christ with our lives. That IS our ONE purpose on this earth. We are in God's Will when our actions glorify HIM. It is God's will that we be sanctified, 1 Thess 4:3. We are to be sanctified.

He briefly touched on it at 1:32: "Are we repenting of those sins?" God's grace is shown when we repent. I think our repentance is a sign that we understand our sin and we're asking God to help us turn from that sin. The next steps he mentions after that is setting up an accountability system to help us in our weakness - so we don't go back to those sins. At no point in that process are we trying to merit God's favor, but our love for God causes us to not want to sin against Him (that was poor grammar, but I hope you get what I'm trying to say).

@Desire Of All Nations It most certainly is biblical. I didn't ever say we should continue in sin, I said "despite our best efforts not to." Until we are glorified in Heaven we are still in these sin cursed bodies and we are going to fail. We still sin even though we don't want to: the flesh wars against the spirit. Bear in mind that no such war exists in a worldly minded individual, therefore they are not of the body of Christ. Romans 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 *For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.* 21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 I thank God-through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin. Galatians 5:16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
