I always thought the essential difference between an americano and a long black is the ratio of water to coffee, where the long black is less diluted. Both are still made with coffee over water. Bearing in mind also that in a café setting the water coming from the hot water tap is often reasonably far above boiling point, and pouring it straight on top risks burning the coffee you just extracted, so it's better to pour the water first to let it cool before extracting the coffee - or at least, so I was told, could be a completely myth tbh 😂

I like the Long Black better. I enjoy the strong hit and mouth feel of getting the crema on the first sip since it's floating on top and not mixed in. It's very bold which I enjoy. 😋☕

If found that when making Americanos the moment that the espresso is sitting in the cup and has a second to cool it will lock in a bitterness that is not present in a long black since the espresso immediately goes into the hot water. Give it a side by side it's quite interesting.
@whatskraken3886 Жыл бұрын
you're ignoring what's actually probably a more important difference: when the hot espresso hits a glass, it cools more rapidly than it would being poured into boiling water. that will change the flavor more than stirring with a spoon vs stirring with water.

I love that explanation, I always said they preferred the long black and I was not sure the physics behind it, but that's a pretty good explanation.

I first started with espresso first, but during a blind tasting we noticed that espresso first, hot water later, actually tastes a bit more bitter, even after stirring. It seems the boiling hot water directly from the boiler (HX machine) burns the crema layer a bit. I wonder if other people have a similar experience!

Daddy also said it doesn't matter, but hot water first looks better. Both are the same drink and you should stir it with a spoon regardless of the order.

There are 2 main differences, the order and the ratio of water to espresso which is much lower in the long black, meaning of more concentrated drink overall. In both differences I think long black takes by taste and texture the Americano. In my opinion my perspective long black wins by much
