I actually vastly prefer Spelunky HD to Spelunky 2 and play through it from time to time, getting those juicy Hell runs in. It's awesome to see you playing it again. Oh and it's great that you survived and stuff. Hopefully the others on that plane also live to tell each of their individual tales. I feel like I would play Spelunky 2 significantly more often if it had different Dwellings music. Like someone else in these comments said, it's like "ear poison" to me. I may just have to mod it to HD music or something.

Lots of waffling ahead. I know you like waffling so maybe you want to read it. Worth getting some thoughts out either way. I recently did a plat run through of HD on a friend's console actually. I definitely think its a more timeless game. My friends I introduced Spelunky too, lots bounced off, some fell in love. My friends that first tried Spelunky 2 all bounced off. It's a real difficulty cliff, and even when you're comfortable with it (like able to do well in CO) you still need to be cautious if you want anything like consistent results. Spelunky HD ends up feeling very relaxed and zen like by comparison once you're getting close to mastery (ghosting plays into this too). Some will consider that a downside, but I don't. 2 isn't a bad game and I have good memories of chaos with friends, but I don't think its as rock solid a game despite having the same framework and new content. Maybe it's just a balancing thing. The increase in repetitive nonrandomness doesn't help either (sun/moon challenges, 5! bosses if you don't use skips, the totem, etc). The branching worlds path should help, but the branching was so imbalanced that almost everyone followed the same route if they wanted progress (ex: very few people consistently picking jungle, almost none consistently picking temple) so it hardly mattered. I also miss Hell, it was a cool zone. And I'm not sure ice caves improved from being made one level, especially with the skip everyone picks up. Re: Cost of living. Few things. Quality of life in lots of places is awful. Frankly in big parts of Africa, SA, ME, and SEA there is a real argument quality of life has deteriorated in the last 50 years. Which is kinda insane from a western standpoint. Not owning some smart phone or having some form of internet access is rare even in the poorest cities. I lived in places where good data plan was $8/mo and wages were like $2-3/hr and everyone still had smartphones mostly less than 3 years old. I remember being surprised initially about it. Not having a phone in a city is more just being a child. If you look at places with insanely low costs of living like surviving on >$1/day then yeah you probably won't have many electronics. In any city though once you keep your salary even if you're barely living you'll probably own a phone within a few weeks (different if you have kids insanely early ig). I guess the similar question to what you're asking is - "Should someone in the 1920s complain?". They're not in the potato famine, they aren't dying in the trenches like some people recently were. The framework of relative suffering is not very insightful because it moves the goals towards complacency rather than progress. Being aware of your privilege is valuable, as is advocating for better supply chains etc, but not saying a word when things deteriorate at home is not. My opinion is from a bit sharper spot of the privileged world though. You've seen your city become highly unaffordable as has a lot of the US, I've seen mine become otherworldly. I live somewhere where household income (usually dual income) is about $50k USD after tax. The absolute cheapest apartment within 1.5 hour of the city I see right now is $400k USD. Median is closer to 650k. We need another digit to talk houses. They recommend you have ~3x the median >household< income to buy here. That's two people making well over six figures. And it's not a silicon valley type place where with enough education you can make bank. There are no guaranteed six figure jobs here except being a doctor. People with comp sci degrees are often making >60k usd before tax 10 years into the job. This is a rent until you run out of money and move/become homeless type deal. Anchorage has now hit an above 3x home price multiplier, where if you could save every penny of a typical household without being taxed for 3 years you'd be able to pay off a good part of a typical home. Maybe it's 4x in reality, not sure. Either way 3x is considered rather unaffordable. It's where my city was in the 1980s. 5x is considered severely unaffordable. NYC has been steadily ~7x. My city is a world leader at 13x now. Unimaginably far out of reach. The kinda place where your interest would be more than a typical (educated) person's income. I could leave, but it means giving up being able to visit family, rebuilding my friends and professional network, etc. That said it's overwhelmingly what people in my city do. Most my friends and network have been here >5 years because so many people realize it's not worth trying to make it work. It's what I'll have to eventually do. I'm trying to move to the US as I figure if I have to move eventually I might as well be making friends now before I'm ancient. I think I'm justified in being sad about it. I think you'd feel differently (maybe a lot less hopeful?) if the prices of everything around you were +4x higher than they are now with zero change in your income. Particularly if you ever wanted a family. I ain't saying you can't raise a family in some level of poverty, my gf's family did and she came out great. Lots make it happen. I'm saying you know it's gotten bad when poor (but not abject poverty) upbringing is the option you unlock if marry and are both college educated and working in your respective fields. It's not the future I would want for anyone's kids. One thing I'd love to see is the government subsidize education for in-demand careers. I would never consider a masters or graduate program right now because pay is low here and tuition is high. It's not like Spain (or most of the first world as well as most of BRIC) where if you want to study something you can and it'll only cost you each summer of waiting tables. Here it's a huge liability, without the same high salaries for tech/finance/law/etc of the US. We're watching the country get richer in real dollars (interest adjusted) per person every year, but people end up poorer, better educated, and less able to afford necessities than ever before. The growth gains in GDP (as well as much of the existing GDP which used to be more evenly split) are going to a narrower and narrower slice of the pie, and rationalizations like 'its worse elsewhere' are not good for addressing this. We have companies with mid-sized country incomes pay lower tax rates than the people bagging your food. But yeah at this point I'd settle for being able to get educated without sweating bullets about the costs and living some terms in a car so I can afford medical on my salary. No one likes seeing their country go backwards.

I still prefer Spelunky HD. I feel it captures the vibe of the game more, and I prefer the art style and controls. Spelunky HD has all the classic adventure story environments: Old abandoned mines, lush jungles, frozen caves, and ancient temples. It's the traditional Indiana Jones-type adventure story environment. Spelunky 2, meanwhile, has all sorts of chaotic stuff that doesn't capture the vibe as much, like Asian-inspired Atlantean regions, trippy living worlds with purple intestines and uvulas, and all sorts of other very unique and creative environments that, while interesting, don't capture the mood. Also, SHD's whip feels so much nicer to use than S2's. And the art style just feels more interesting with SHD. There's more contrast. Everything in S2 just feels so smooth and blended together, and doesn't pop as much.

You've already struck on the main issue with Spelunky 2 vs HD. Time. The levels were shorter. The ghost timer was faster (is the ghost ever a threat in 2?). If you did finish the chain, Hell is the shortest set of levels. The tension, the item juggling, the respect for the player's time all made HD a better formula. But it is what it is, and I can only hope Spelunky 3 swings the ball the other way.
